Rainy September Days in Vermont
The Civilian Marksmanship Program’s New England Games Matches, held September 18-25, 2022, at the Camp Ethan Allen National Guard Training Site in Vermont, can be described in one word: WET.

Though suffering one of the toughest weather weeks in the event’s history through cold temperatures and steady rainfall, Pistol and Rifle competitors still managed to give outstanding performances on the firing line, with some new record scores being set.

Notable 2022 New England Games Results and New Records

In CMP Games rifle events, Brian Williams, 48, who is a current New England Games record holder in several events, set yet another record with a 383-6X in the Carbine Match. This topped the previous score he had set himself in 2016. Williams was also only two points away from setting a new record in the Modern Military event — he holds the current record in the match from his 2018 performance.

Maisey Loucks, 28, showed great talent in the Rimfire Sporter Rifle Match, finishing with 579-26X, just three points from the current TU class record. Earlier this year, at the Camp Perry National Matches in July, Maisey earned the High Woman title in the National Carbine Match, setting a record in the process.

Reaching a new New England Games record in the Vintage Sniper Match was Hard Leg #2 (James Horton, Jack Chomko), who beat the previous record set in 2018 by one x-shot, with a score of 397-16X.

Bettering a record in the EIC Match by X-Count was SSG Verne Conant, 26, who accumulated a score of 497-26X in his impressive win. Top competitors of the match earned EIC (Excellence-In-Competition) points toward a Distinguished Badge, including two junior athletes: Jack Marshall, 20, and Shannon Moriarty, 14. Marshall finished the match fourth overall while Shannon Moriarty took fifth.

Outside of the recreational Games Matches, the CMP hosted a series of High Power matches that included a team event, three days of 800 Aggregate shooting, and a culminating 2400 Aggregate. Individuals were recognized for their Service or Match Rifle use, scores at each position and Civilian or Military status.

Coast Guard Pistolero Dominates CMP New England Games

Coast Guard Petty Officer Charlie Petrotto Vermont pistol travel games CMP winner handgun bullseye

This fall in Vermont, Coast Guard Petty Officer First Class (PO1) Charlie Petrotto proved he is one of the nation’s top pistol shooters. At the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) New England Travel Games, held at the Camp Ethan Allen in Vermont in September, 34-year-old PO1 Petrotto won every single pistol competition during the event. As the “Top Gun” in every pistol match, Petrotto took home SEVEN plaques for his pistol marksmanship — a remarkable trophy haul.

Report based on story by Ashley Brugnone, CMP Writer
At the 2018 New England Games, Charlie Petrotto swept all the pistol events. Competitors during the pistol events saw the skies open up to periodic rain showers, but, according to Petrotto, the biggest challenge wasn’t the precipitation so much as the darkness brought on from the clouds overhead.

That created a challenge he explained, “Obviously you need to be hard on your front sights and smooth on the trigger, and it was hard to do the first part, so it was hard to get on your sights and stay on your sights – the target was so bright, and your sights were so dark. It was easy to just jump to the target. I shot a couple of 7’s that way, not paying attention to my sights.” Though adequately tested, he captured each win during the weekend.

Petrotto is passionate about marksmanship. He’s a Coast Guard Petty Officer First Class (Gunners Mate) currently stationed at the Coast Guard Academy. There he studies marksmanship and works with cadets and Officer Candidate School (OCS) candidates.

Being stationed at the Coast Guard Academy has definitely helped Petrotto’s skill set: “It’s really a fortunate opportunity,” he said. “I get to come in early to work, we have a range where I shoot air pistol, I shoot free pistol, .45, .22 – all the things – before we have a cup of coffee and get to work. With that, we really get to do a lot of shooting,” he said with a grin.

Petrotto has achieved both Pistol and Rifle Distinguished badges. And he has reached the President’s Hundred in pistol at the Camp Perry National Matches four years running. Petrotto’s love for marksmanship competition began when he was in A-school in the Coast Guard. Looking through a manual he saw a picture of the Distinguished Badges. He photocopied the pages, put them in his locker and told himself, “I have to get that.” And he did — he is now double-distinguished in both pistol and rifle.

The New England Games have become extremely popular for the breathtaking views and serene environment. Add in the new electronic target system and you have a recipe for success.

2017 CMP Games New England Electronic Targets

The 2017 New England Games will feature the CMP’s electronic High Power targets. Thus far in 2017, this mobile target system was used during the Oklahoma Games in April, the Eastern Games in May, and at Camp Perry in June. The electronic target system is now well-sorted and provides accurate scoring. Shooters have monitors right at their shooting stations, providing instant scoring info — no more waiting for the targets to be marked manually. And with the elimination of pit duty allowed by the target system, matches are completed in a shorter amount of time.

The CMP provides ammunition and a rifle during the Rifle SAFS.

Competitors Praise Venue and Match
Competitors at last year’s inaugural CMP New England Game were mightily impressed by Camp Ethan Allen, a beautiful venue. “I was blown away by the facilities at Camp Ethan Allen,” said Steve Cooper, CMP North general manger. “The grounds were neatly manicured, our offices for registration and sales were very convenient and the classrooms were perfect for our clinics.”

He went on to say, “As beautiful as the surroundings were, the people were even better. They truly wanted us there and they enjoyed the matches, clinics, and other activities. It will be a pleasure to return next year for an even bigger and better event.” Photos from the 2016 event are posted on the CMP’s Zenfolio website.

Many awards will be earned at the 2017 New England Games…

Of course, it wouldn’t be a true CMP Games event without a Rimfire Sporter Match.
