the mil dot is a way to calculate bullet drop over a range of distances. most scopes can be used at 10x magnification and each mil dot is 3.6 inches at 100 yards or 36 inches at 1000 yards. at 100 yards each mil dot is 3.6 inches in between, so it is 3.6 to the first dot, 7.2 to the second dot 10.8 ect. a lot of scopes have to be set at 10x because as you magnify the reticle size changes, although some scopes have a fixed reticle size. I hope this helps.
