My first 222 (about 1973) was a BRNO ZKB-680 Fox with those stupid European double set-triggers. The 'scope was a Khales Helia 6X with a 26mm tube...getting mounts for it was easy back in those days. It shot great, but the trigger was a real bear, especially if you loaned it to a friend who did not know how to set it. Sold it, although it routinely shot half-inch groups at 100 yds.
In 1974 I bought a Winchester Model 70 in 222 with a heavy barrel (the M70V). In those days they only made the long action, so the magazine was blocked off at the back. I put the Khales Helia 6X 'scope on it and proceeded to shoot half-inch groups with pretty much any projectile I fed it, eventually standardising on Hornady 50gr projectiles, currently the 50gr VMAX.
I still have that rifle 51 years later! It still shoots half an inch at 100 metres (Australia went metric back in '75). These days it has a Bushnell Elite 4500 6-24x50 'scope and I recently put a Boyds Varmint thumbhole stock on it to replace the 1970's "splinter" from Winchester. It needs a Timney trigger, although the factory one can be worked on a bit. This is my club informal centrefire benchrest rifle.
25.5gr of 748 in either a Sako or a Winchester case with Rem 7-1/2 BR primers averages 3074fps...fast enough to do the job.
Mike Walker designed better than he knew when he drew the 222.

Hi guys, I have a Remington model 722 in 222 cal
Was my fathers, only thing done to the gun it’s been glass beded he only shot it occasionally at chucks. A few years ago I mounted a 8x32 Burris on it and started competing in club matches for stock rifles. After some experimenting my most accounts load was 23.5 grains of H 4895 topped with a Barts 50 gr FB bullet, Lapua case and Federal match primers. I’ve won several times at both 100 and 200 yards. Shoot under 1/2” at 200 yds bullet was seated.20 off the rifling. I still have the original scope my father used a 10 power Lyman fantastic gun thats at least 60 years old
