The aerosol is much less smelly than the liquid. It appears, though, that some people are more sensitive to the smell than others. If you read the buyer reviews on MidwayUSA, for example, only maybe one in a dozen complained about the smell and the reviews were otherwise overwhelmingly positive. Personally, I find the smell much less bothersome than the ammonia odors in many solvents. Ballistol is also completely non-toxic, something you can't say about most lubes and solvents. Also, because Ballistol is not petroleum-based, it is ideal for black-powder cartridge rifles, and is widely used by BPCR shooters.

IT may be that the aerosol version is sweeter smelling, but IMHO saying that the liquid version smells funny is like saying that gym sock that has been through two workouts has a slight odor. I bought some, and since I reload in the house, decided that nothing that it might be good for was so unique as to justify the smell. In fairness, I have not tried the aerosol version, and the Editor tells me that he has no such complaint about it. Of course he may have an unmodified pet skunk that masks it. I will have to ask him.
