Comments on: Free NRA Membership for Active-Duty Military Personnel

Can military personnel actively be members of a political interest group like this?

I’m finding mixed things online. I would assume that they can or else the NRA wouldn’t do something like this, but I would like to make sure.

I as given a membership in the 70s when I was active duty and I wish The NRA would lead the way when it comes to background checks and banning bump stocks . That said WE need to defend our rights and defend OUR KIDS. God Help us do what is right and ignore what is wrong .

It all comes down to perspective. I have served Active Duty and National Guard; my wife is in the Army Reserves. Nothing we do can be called sacrifice when we all volunteered to do it. It is no more a sacrifice than the decision to use the toilet or go outside. It just is what we do. We all make our choices…and we all have the same options. If you want to do 20+ and get paid retirement now, you’re active. If you make the choice to stay in the Guard or Reserves for 20+ then you made the choice to get paid later. Regardless, YOU made the choice and YOU don’t have the right to complain about it. This is not the Army of Vietnam where anyone serving today was drafted. I second SFC Schecht’s statement, you’ve all served your country, and I thank you for your service! Because you made the decision to serve in whatever capacity you chose this country continues to enjoy the freedoms our forefathers brought forward and our brothers and sisters before us fought and died to preserve. Do it because you feel it’s right, not because you think there should be something in it for you. You’ve earned the right to be called a Veteran, nothing more.

People who volunteer to serve this country only make up 1% of the population. All Soldiers and Vets deserve everything they can get. The injuries, weather physical or other are real, and sacrifices were large for everyone who served. The fact that a SGM is arguing an active duty point that active duty is harder, may or may not be true. All I know is a good leader would never minimalize anyone else’s service. Yes I retired active and don’t really agree with the argument. Anyone who serves did exactly that, THEY SERVED! Thank you all for your service.

I belive that this should also be offred to EX Vets as well as National Guard and reservists should qualify. This is the fair way of making it work right.

Being Active Duty AF, I payed to be a Member anyway… It aint about what is Free, it is about defending our Rights as Americans, we sacrificed more to be in the Military to defend our Rights, why not sacrifice a little more for the same cause?

Every one of you whining about the free membership offer not being available to this group of people or that group of people are just looking for something to complain about. If joining the NRA were that important to you, then you would join. So, quit crying about who’s life is rougher, each and everyone of you VOLUNTEERED, no one proped a shotgun againt the side of your skull and said “Join or else!”

Now, get off your butt, find the NRA website and join. Or is that too difficult also?

The Guard Sacrifice MORE then the AD does. I know, I have been both. Reg Army’s life is set up for field time and deployments after 20 (if they can put up with it) they get to retire. Guard’s lives are not set up for deployments. They leave home just the same, BUT they do NOT advance at work, other are promoted over them. they put up with hostile bosses they suffer financially like the AD guys never will. In the “old” days ya one week end two weeks etc. Those days are LONG gone. example I have an E-6 who has been deploy 4x since 2002 He has missed so much work his boss hates him and no law passed can help, Yet he will not get a penny of retirement until 60.He and his family will have sacrifice 10s of thousands of dollars in lost wages by the time this over

This is not to be disrespectfull to anyone. Just would like to put out there that quite a few of us National Guard Soldiers do not just sacrifice a weekend a month or two weeks a year. Some of us have full time jobs with the Military and then do 3 3 week training in one year, along with going to other training for 10 days or so at a moments notice. This also includes deployments along the way. Not to mention the State Duties due to floods, snow and or any other type of storm. I have spent more time away from my family this year than I have spent at home. So as respectfully as I can be I just want to clarify, “Just because a Soldier is with the National Guard does not mean that they are not Active Duty also.”
