Well, the idea behind the thinging of the CMP was that everyone had a plinking rifle in the closet somewhere around the house. This is what the CMP rule book states; “The CMP Rimfire Sporter Rifle Match gives shooters a recreation-oriented competition
that allows them to use their favorite rimfire sporters (plinking and small
game rifles) on the range”. That was a whole attraction for me, I got back to shooting my plinking .22 rifles. I still love my Anschutz rifles but the matches I shoot with the Anschutz are more hard work then fun. The Rimfire Sporter matches are just pure fun to shoot.

I view myself as about as normal as they come in terms of rifle shooters. I however, don’t have a rifle that is legal for this sport. All my .22’s for one reason or another won’t qualify.

As such, it seems to me that the CMP would do well to include a class for the large group of .22 rifles that won’t quite make the weight limits.

I’d remove all restrictions on the weapon (keeping those on the shooters personal equipment). This would allow for more competitors but wouldn’t pinch the sporter crowd as they would have their own class. Heck I’d even want .17’s included.

The rule that works so well for other shooting sports should be considered: Allow people to compete with the equipment they HAVE. In other words, this is why trapshooting and sporting clays thrive while other shooting sports languish. If I (or the average competitor) have to BUY a gun just to show up once, we probably won’t. If we can give it a spin with what we have, I for one will be there.

Something the brass at CMP should consider.

Yes, the tactical class of Rimfire Sporter is for AR-15/16 types of rifles. Not the Tactical heavy target type rifles you see shooting .308 and other cal. It is to be for the now many dirrerent types of military looking .22rl rifles and not heavy target type rifles

I wish the CMP defined the tactical class as inferred by the article. It doesn’t. Note the following from the match program: “Rifles that are legal in the Tactical Class must comply with the requirements listed above and have a configuration that is similar to that of common AR and modern military rifles.”
