After ordering two stocks from Richards Micro Fit, I will tell you flat out that they are far from the quality most are looking to bolt a custom action into, and even most semi customs with factory actions deserve better. Poor finishing of the wood, poor inletting, and just a poor product make them a last resort for anyone looking for a quality product. I tried to "enhance" the stiffness of a laminate I purchased from them by basically soaking it with fiberglass resin, and while it did work, it was far more effort than should be needed.
The hardwood blank was a nice chunk of wood for the money, but again inletting was far from the 95% they claim, closer to maybe 70%. But it still required extensive sanding before it was near smooth.

But that's what you get when you want to try and save a buck in this market, sub-standard quality that lacks in many areas.

Charles Ballard set an F-Open record with a rifle wearing PRT stock, so evidently they are producing some nice stuff, and definitely worth the extra cost over a Richard's Micro Fit.

Anyway, the designs offered by micro fit are far from cutting edge, and are really basic bench designs that could use a bit of updating.

When you are investing the money to compete in F-Class, what's $300 for a stock in the big picture anyway but a drop in the bucket?

I started "building" custom Savage target rifles about a year ago. My goal was to find the highest quality products in the industry to customize the rifles with. I wanted a shooter to be able to purchase a Savage Doctor rifle and have the ultimate Savage without having to customize it any further and be competitive on every level. I purchased stocks from a variety of stock makers to find which manufacturer made the highest quality stocks for F-Class and longrange benchrest competition. The PR&T, LLC stocks were head and shoulders above every other stock that we tested. The craftsmanship, fit and finish are first class. I had to cut, carve and grind on all the other stocks to get them to fit. When I get a PR&T,LLC stock in the mail, I only have to bolt in the barreled action and go to the range. I wont even get into how well they track in the bags. You have to shoot one to believe it anyway. Ray and Charles are first class people to deal with. No BS. No hype. Just a bunch of blue ribbons and satisfied customers to do their talking for them. JT

Precision Rifle and Tool (PRT) built one complete F-class rifle and has upgraded several other rifles and handguns for me. All work was professionally done and was right the first time. The custom competition rifle PRT built was a 284 Win on the Ballard F-Open laminated stock. Not only was this stock straight and meticulously finished, but it tracks extremely well. The stocks produced by PRT are very high quality products. You might find a stock for less money but most of the time you get what you pay for...

I own and shoot rifles fitted with these stocks and can assure anyone in doubt that these stocks are second to none. I have seen some of these stocks being produced and am convinced the quality and craftsmanship put into these stocks is the best you can find. The blanks are the truest you will find and will need very little finishing. I can't imagine anyone being dissatisfied with a stock blank that is made this well.

You will find that the exterior finish on Richard's Micro-Fit (in Calif.) is extremely rough. ON BR style stocks they are not particularly straight. I would NOT recommend a Micro-Fit unless you are prepared to do tons of finish work. I purchased one for a Savage and the inletting was so bad as to require "major surgery" to fix.

Some guys have acquired some nice hardwood blanks from Richard's micro-fit for a good price. But I would stay away from Micro-Fit's laminated stocks. Very poruous, very rough, not particularly stiff. BTDT.

Actually, that's not really the case. Just spoke to Charles Ballard and he says most of the blanks are in the low $300s -- about average for a match-type laminated stock. And that's before the discount. PRT's web designer is just lax on getting the price list up.
