Sadly, my last string at 1K looked much like that shown on the scoring monitor in the bottom photo….

The little .223 can do it though!

It wasn’t when I bought it Tom, but you’re right, their website only shows the tactical magazine versions despite their being listed under the heading of MP-MODSS, the SS being for single shot.

The SS that I have was a non-magazine centre section available for popular actions i/c the three screw Savage 12 and with a range of interchangeable forends and buttstock assemblies / components. I bought mine as a Savage single-shot middle bit, two forends, the 2.5″ Varmint I use for F-Class and a 3″ wide BR front for use off a front-rest; rigid rear buttstock with bag rider + cheek-bar pieces (the cheek-bar has been used as a bag rider and no cheek-bar used to save weight – not needed anyway for F/TR) + two cheek-sideplates should I ever use the rifle for something where a rear bag isn’t usable and need a cheek-weld.

I would email McRees and ask if they still make these parts plus whatever action single-shot centre section you need.

Good shooting Laurie…I am waiting on a 32″ 7.5T 6G Lawton for my 5.56 to turn up and was wondering if you might have any idea is to what load I should start with….I have been using 25.4 of AR2208 (Varget) in 28″ 7.7T 80 Sierra HPBT Non Molly…we are limited down under with choice. I am limited to the use of 80gn pills in TR…I have scored 120.20V at 600 yds with a 30″ 7.7T but loads are in excess of max loads in ALL available data and one of my main aims is to return to safe loads (although I have no pressure signs) and show others it can be done…Safety is paramount.
Current brass is Winchester but will soon be switching to ADI 09 (have 300 and they measure up nice & have small flash hole) and am running CCI-BR4 primers.
Any pointers appreciated..

Thanks for the response Laurie. I have a 223 AI reamer on hand… I’ve been wanting to do a 223AI build with the main goal of launching the 90gr VLD’s. Your success with the plain 223 Rem makes me want to get that project started as soon as possible! Good stuff!

There will be more on AccurateShooter on the rifle and loading .223 Rem for 1,000yd, but the basics are:

out of the box Savage 12 PT bought secondhand
McRees modular MP-MODSS aluminium modular stock

True-Flite 31″ 6-grrove 1-7″ twist barrel from New Zealand

Very long freebore chamber to suit 90gn Berger VLD

Sightron S3 8-32X56 LR early model – a great scope.

Lapua match brass with light clean-up neck turn

CCI-450 or PMC Russian small mag primer

90gn VLD and Varget for 2,849 fps or Re15 for 2,907 fps. Re15 is more temperature sensitive and the limiting factor is primer extrusion back into the bolt with a standard non-bushed Savage action, so I’ve moved to VarGet this year.
