Pasted from this site:

"Americans Purchase 10.8 Million Guns in 2011 — A New Record"

"Americans Purchase over 14,000,000 Guns in 2009"

EDITOR: You have a sharp eye. Here's the explanation. The 2009 story was based on RAW NICS numbers, which indeed were a record in 2009. The 2011 numbers, are based on NSSF-adjusted NICS counts, which are displayed for the last decade. You can see the trend is rising with the ADJUSTED numbers. The NSSF adjusts NICS data by subtracting out NICS purpose-code permit checks used by several states such as Kentucky, Iowa and Utah for CCW permit application checks as well as checks on active CCW permit databases.
