I too was puzzled to see what appeared to be the familiar AR gas key just with a solid tip rather than a tube. My understanding of the piston systems is that if you are using a carrier set up with a separate key, that unless the key is pinned on (in addition to the screws) that can be a weak link in the piston system (because the key was never designed to handle the forces imparted to it by a piston, since all it was originally designed to do was carry the gas impulse into the inside of the carrier).
