Cool idea! Got to make this for man cave entertainment. Might use 30-06 and 308 for king and queen. Not everyone has a 50bmg laying around.

The board isn't set right. Look carefully at the position of the Queen piece.

EDITOR: Good eye, JT. On a chessboard the King is normally the tallest piece and should directly oppose the other King, both in the 'D' line. In the 3-D Rendering, if the tallest cartridges are the Kings, then the brass-colored King should be on the fourth square from the left, not the fifth. Another way to understand it, is that each Queen should be on a square of its color (white Queen on white square, black queen on black square). Here, the two tallest cartridges (the Kings) should be directly opposed. See: http://chess.about.com/od/rulesofchess/ss/Boardsetup_6.htm

I don't think you would use live rounds but make up dummy rounds with no powder or primers from your reload pile. You could put a clear coat on them to keep the brass from dulling. Also just use FMJ so not to have any exposed lead on your hands.

From what I reload I could make, 9mm, 38 specials, 45 ACP, 45 Colt, 12ga, 30-30, and .223. So I would have one more type then needed for a chess board.

Not a good way to teach children proper safe handling of cartridges. And I won't mention the eventual corrosion of the brass on finger tips while snacking.
