hi all. I've worked alot on the mile shot, with my Steyr SSG 08 338LM, and a well developed load using N570 and Scenar 300.

What I learned is it's almost a futile waste of ammo to go out to 1760 yards. Why? Because while if you've excelled at handloading you can control vertical dispersion, you cannot control horizontal dispersion to wind ESPECIALLY at 1760 yards. My shots could very ten feet left or right a a 24" square AR500 target, depending on the winds between me and a mile away.

You burn so much ammo and throat on guessing wind.

What I'd like the author to do, is go up to that same exact target one month from now, and cold bore nail that balloon. No sighters, just cold bore. Or I'll even let him warm up the barrel at 500 yards. Bet he won't hit that balloon on first try! And that is all that counts... does that cold bore shot hit it or not.

I have over a mile between mine and my neighbour's hay fields. 338LM at a mile is fun, but I have done it regularly with a 6BR and 105 Berger hunting match bullets. Next time I will post a video.

The mile mark is the new 1000 yard point for those of us bored with such close range stuff!

I've shot 1500 yards in competition and it was tremendous fun with a 7mm Boo Boo (180 grain Bergers at 3050fps).
