What makes you assume that it's a 223 other than his 600 yard scores? The USAMU has been fielding rifles in the match class in other-than NATO calibers for a few years. I doubt they'd send him to Nationals with a sub-par caliber. As reference of non-traditional calibers for a military team, Gallagher was shooting a Tubb 2000 in 260 Rem for the AMU sometime back.
However, your assumption could be correct based on a record of poor decision making of the US .gov

Barnhart's rifle is definitely very cool looking but I assume it's a 223 Rem, and in the last day or so since the bulletin posting, Barnhart's taken a pretty good hit on his 600 yard scores. 223 Rem is great for 600 with calm conditions but it's no match against the 6mm's at that distance and I suspect (maybe rightly or wrongly) that's some of what's going on (i.e. the 6mm's came on strong at 600).
