That way if the case gets tilted or isn’t pushed into the shell holder all the way (which sometimes happens when you’re trying to decap a ton of brass quickly), the decapping rod doesn’t crush the edge of the case mouth (which is what happens with the flat bottom edge of the decapping rod the way it comes from the factory).
