These are on sale at Home Depot in the Denver Metro area for $8 from what is now $18 retail. Good score if you can find a store that still has some left.

This could get to be a very long comment list as there are MANY alternatives.

I actually have a pair of these muffs that I've had for over 10 years - they are fine if you double plug with foam one-use plugs like http://www.amazon.com/Howard-Leight-MAX-1-plugs-Uncorded/dp/B0033YLEGO/ref=sr_1_15?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1419885416&sr=1-15&keywords=ear+plugs+for+noise+reduction

I always double plug (muffs - better than those in this article - plus 33 NNR plugs). Plugs can be bought for dirt cheap prices on Amazon - shipped. Highly recommend.
