It’s only necessary when the barrel is diametrically magnetized, if it is axially magnetized it actually helps keep the burning gasses more in a column behind the bullet.

I worked at an Iron works plant as a welder for a couple of years and we ran the big I beams through a degaussing step before it went to the wheelabrator for blasting. The idea was to remove all the magnetic fields that had developed from drilling and welding on the big beams. Never knew the reason why. Maybe this?

I can see how it would help the chips clear when the bore is being drilled.

But $50 per barrel?! They do 50 blanks at a time, so one batch costs $2500?! I mean, it’s not leaving a layer of gold, is it? Why would it cost that much? seems like it ought to cost about a buck a barrel.

Great idea, I’ll degauss my Retreiver as to not interfere with waterfowl inertial navigation in the hopes of filling bag limits as they fly within gunning range. Brilliant!

I think this one is legitimate regardless of the date. I worked for the Navy in an ordnance overhaul facility for about 30 years and degaussing was a common process.
