The paper behind the target is to indicate cross fires and if you shoot really tight groups. You can “prove” you fired 5 shots per target.

Trophies and awards come and go. NRA trophies won’t sit on the shelf, it will probably be rededicated over to another shooting discipline. There is no reason in ANY of the shooting disciplines to give a separate woman award. Maybe in the beginning you needed a special award for women, but not anymore.

Not happy about it. They have had a national trophy for women prone and 3P for decades. Now that trophy will sit on a shelf. Women always competed against men for the open championship so I don’t see why keeping the tradition of a womens champion was suddenly a bad thing.

Your description here misrepresents the situation. There were only special awards for women, not men, and both men and women always have competed directly against each other for the same awards, at least nationally in NRA competitions. The only thing that’s changing is the elimination of the “high woman” award.

Editor: The above comment is from Reya Kempley one of the nation’s top smallbore shooters. Reya is 100% correct that the main point of the change is to eliminate a female-specific award. FWIW, many women have won the non-gender-specific awards many times. This is explained in the last paragraph. And Reya is correct that men and women, at least at the nationals, shoot in the same events, and are squaded together. It is different in some collegiate and international compatitions.
