Ray, Are you saying the tactical bolt gun guys don’t care about accuracy? If so I will disagree. They shoot they’re guns out to 1200 yards typically at some of those matches. They also are looking for the best they can lay they’re hands on. A couple of the shooters are Marine Corp Snipers and they’ve tested they’re guns in a 300 yard tunnel at Quantico to see how they shoot.

I wonder which of these manufacturers does and doesn’t use this honing machine as well? “Hand lapped” Hawk Hill doesn’t sound like it. Bartlein and Benchmark have been mentioned. What about Proof Research?

We did the testing on the prototype machine for about 6 months to a year. We purchased a production machine after that and early last year we bought a second one.

The chuck doesn’t rotate/move at all. It’s just for holding onto the barrel. The hone spins and moves back and forth.

Benchmark Barrels also has a Sunnen hone that they’ve been using on their barrels since last year.

Thanks for the article, it is pretty neat. I can be the only one that cringed when I saw the key left in the chuck though!

It is neat to see a (local to me) St. Louis based manufacturer (Sunnen) in the bulletin! They make some top quality components, and their facility is fantastic!
