On a centre fire rifle a decent ported muzzle brake will give much better control than any suppressor I have used or see.

I have many suppressors from .17 up to 50BMG, European & locally made.

We are lucky living in New Zealand with no restrictions on suppressors

Right on, ELR! Unless you shoot subsonic ammo, the device doesn’t silence a firearm. It should be a requirement if one wants to save shooting ranges in developed zones; after all, you wouln’t want to drive your car without an exhaust or a muffler, right? The same should apply to guns in urban zones. And it really protects hearing when you use it along with hearing protection.

While I don’t disagree that “silencer” is inaccurate, I do fell the need to point out that the guy normally credited as being the father of these devices (Hiram Percy Maxim) patented the first one in 1909 and it was named the “Maxim SILENCER”. So…… I agree that “Sound Suppressor” is both more accurate and PC but “Silencer” cannot be considered wrong……. That’s my 2 cents and now I’m flat broke…..

IMO “silencer” is not only inaccurate (they do not silence firearms), it plays into the hands of anti-2A folks by making it appear sinister and inherently evil. Since when is saving your hearing “evil”.

With all the “enlightened” thinking going on, seems those “enlightened” should realize that saving your hearing makes sense on absolutely every level. Ask all the troops that came back from war zones with permanently damaged hearing.

And folks really need to get on board with “sound suppressor” rather than “silencer”.

I certainly disagree that America is the hardest place in the World to own suppressors. Just mention suppressors or silencers in Australia and everyone is in a frenzy! They are banned in most states and Very hard to acquire unless professional shooting in others.

Well everyone has their own reasons. But for me, it protects hearing. Allows me to shoot anytime I want without worrying about upsetting neighbors. Last but not least they are cool.

3) Increases back pressure and leads to a (slightly) higher bullet velocity
4) Completes military rifle “clones” for collectors (e.g. M40A5)
