No skill level can overcome a mediocre or inaccurate rifle in F-Class. Matches and early relays fortunate enough to have wind that doesn’t require hold offs outside the 10 ring, let alone both sides of the distant black, will produce hero scores from anyone who knows how to shoot a rifle, if they have, or borrowed, great gear. F-class at it’s inception, deliberately removed physical challenges from firing the rifle, leading now to many shooters having virtually no contact with rifles except the trigger finger.

The true sifting of shooter skills begins when the wind requires the shooter to assess hold offs several rings away from the X. Obviously, a caliber/load selection that drifts less, requires a smaller hold off, and a hold closer to the X punishes the shooter less for mistakes in judgment.

Follow up to Richard…

There’s a cliché that claims the rifle shoots better than the shooter, but that is cold comfort in F Class competition where half the guys there can out shoot their rifles.

At the level of F Class competition these days, competitors can afford to leave absolutely nothing to chance.

Even the best shooters will rarely do well unless the rifle does produce bug holes regardless of what they spend. The only exception to this is when the wind blows so hard that rifle accuracy becomes almost irrelevant.

So yes I agree the shooter must have the talent and experience to get the most out of his rifle, but the rifle must deliver the goods 100 percent of the time. Fresh barrels are critical and you will need your best barrel fitter on retainer to play this game.

The worst mistake a new F Class shooter could make is to purchase gear that does not or cannot be made to shoot well under ½ MOA… and under ¼ MOA is more like the norm.

I won’t even get into the obsessive chambering, throating and reloading techniques you’ll need to learn.

The weakest link in the whole F Class rifle build is the shooter and we should focus a little on this aspect in any rifle build as the shooting disciplines are dealing more and more with Internet Experts who walk away disappointed that their expensive purchase does not bughole in competition.

After that, scopes seem to be the bugbear. Needless to say the quickest way to start a brawl on a forum is to discuss scope brands.
