I would assume the most likely reason a guy would use the holdover method is because he probably does not know the click values he needs for the shot.

I like to make custom turret labels for each rifle and each load.

Here's how I do it.

holdover and crank elevation both work well if you know how to use them. Iam a long range shooting instructor for Indian head rifle and pistol club out of spooner, Wi. We are one of the few clubs with a 600 yard range. Do not come here and expect to use hold over to shoot on this range. It is not allowed for safety reasons.

clicking is only, imho, if you have a scope you can set to Zero Stop. Otherwise it will not take long to forget where you started.

I shoot Rockchucks and Coyotes in Idaho, and have Geovids. I use Zero Stop scopes these days.

It all depends on your situation. If you are taking really long shots out where the wind blows quite a bit. Holding off will put your target where there are no reference marks in your scopes field of view, so in that situation spending the extra for a scope with very reliable turrets and using your knobs is a probably the way to go. On the other hand a lot of my varmint shooting has been from one to four hundred yards with very mild to no wind, and for that kind of shooting holding off works very well. I try to use the same load all of the time and be familiar with the hold overs at various distances.
