I had the pleasure of meeting Gunny a few times. The first was at Parris Island in the late 90’s when I was the field training corpsman. He was there with the History Channel I believe filming the newly created “Crucible”. Always a gentleman, and Marine to the core. The second time, I ran into him at the uniform shop at Camp Pendleton just days before I deployed to Iraq. Shortly there after, at Camp Doha in the sand box. Gunny, you will be missed. The character he created in full metal jacket will live on for decades. Whoever wrote the script, and I assume he wrote some of it, was brilliant.
Generations have quoted the lines and guys still use the words in the locker room. He also seemed so genuine and likeable.

I had the pleasure of shooting next to Gunny at the 2010 National Matches. Such a pleasant man, even with all the attention he was receiving, always gracious and willing to give his time to the junior shooters.
