I bought a Cannon safe a couple years ago, has a hardwired LED illumination system incorporated. Otherwise I could have installed one of the battery-operated motion-sensing LED things I got for my wife’s closet last year, about $21 from local hardware store.

Editor: Good point, but your refrigerator probably uses a simple spring-loaded contact switch to make a circuit when the door is open. Until safe-makers add such a feature, some kind of independent sensor is a useful solution.
