Generally speaking, when you combine two hearing protectors, ear muffs over ear plugs, you can expect an increase of between 3 and 10 dB over the higher-performing hearing protector. OSHA [now advises]

So are they saying 2 cheap forms of protection [ muffs & plugs] are worse than just one type? I don't think so / It looks like a new muff add to me. ?

Editor-- No, you took that out of context, not reading preceding paragraph which talks about the increase in noise REDUCTION from multiple protective units. They are referring to an increase in the Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) of 3 to 10 DB, or 5 db on average according to OSHA. I have added a reference so others don't make the same mistake.

At age 23, I began shooting in competition with a 30 caliber club. Back in those days, I could not afford hearing muffs, so I shoved cotton in each ear. Now I regret that decision. I am 50 years older and still shooting but am nearly totally deaf. I wear two hearing aids and always put my muffs on when I shoot. I was a very foolish young man.
