You're just late to the party. In Britain and commonwealth countries(Canada Australia New Zealand) grateful governments inflicted firearms licencing on their citizens, including their returned servicemen, soon after WW1 as e reward for spending their last 5 years being shot at. They were now regarded as potential revolutionaries and their access to firearms restricted.
Once it starts it's ever onward with more restrictions in the name of public safety.
Universal registration of firearms is of course, the holy grail of firearms control, as it allows all firearms legally held, to be located and taxed. Registration also makes possible confiscation of all legally held firearms whenever a bureaucrat deems it necessary for public safety.
It has happened in Britain, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand.
Of course, one of the first successful examples of universal registration followed by confiscation was Germany 1933-1945.
