Editor: The claim of protecting endangered species from lead, in California, has been used as an excuse to block off large tracts of land from all hunting. In addition, lead pollution has been used as reason to close numerous gun ranges in California. At the same time there is vastly more lead pollution in vehicle junkyards. The lead ammo ban represents an initial stage, with the next step no indoor ranges, then no ranges on public lands. I have a friend who works for the CA Dept. of Fish & Wildlife. He says the lead ammo ban has had no demonstrable impact whatsoever on endangered species. Absolutely none. The real purpose for these restrictions was more about curtailing firearms use than helping wildlife.
