Do you have trouble seeing your bullet holes (on paper) when shooting past 400 yards? That’s a common issue even with premium ($2000+) high-magnification scopes. Here’s a target that solves that problem. A hit creates a larger black circle “halo” that’s much more visible than a plain bullet hole, making this target ideal for use at longer range (500 yards and beyond).

» CLICK HERE for White 12″ Reactive Grid Target, $9.49 5-Pack

The 12″ square Birchwood Casey white background Sight-In Target displays a black “halo” around each hit (like the yellow circle on a conventional Shoot-N-C). Larger than bullet diameter, the “halos” can be easily seen with a high-magnification scope at long range (see video below). The self-adhesive target features five diamonds with contrasting red box centers. For precise aiming, you can position your cross-hairs to align with the corners of the boxes. Or, you can put a target dot sticker in the middle.

This reactive white background grid target has 5 aiming points and a 1-inch grid overlay for easy, precise sight adjustments. It comes with target pasters to cover up the bullet holes (halos). The White/Black Shoot-N-C 12″ Square GRID Sight-In Targets come in 5-packs with target pasters for $9.49 from MidwayUSA or $8.69 from Palmetto SA. If you prefer reactive Shoot-N-C circle targets, there is an 8″ circle target, a 12″ circle target, and a large 17.5″ circle target with red diamond center (photo right). These all have bullet pasters.

High-Viz Option — Yellow on Black Grid with Yellow Halos

If you prefer seeing ultra-high-contrast yellow/green “halos” for your hits, Birchwood Casey also makes adhesive grid targets with five yellow-edged diamonds. Red circles provide precise aiming points in the middle of each box. You can quickly estimate group size or dial-in your zero using the hi-viz yellow 1″ grid lines. These yellow-on-black targets are available in three sizes: 8″ square, 12″ square, and 17.25″ square. These yellow-on-black grid targets start at $9.99 for an 8″ six-pack.

Rimfire plinking with reactive targets is FUN and affordable. We always like to include REACTIVE TARGETS during a trip to the range with our .22s. Decent .22 LR rimfire ammo is not expensive, and a wide variety of affordable steel targets are available. Rimfire-class steel is much less costly than the heavy AR500 steel plates used for centerfire rounds. In fact, Birchwood Casey makes a wide variety of reactive steel rimfire targets that retail for under $50.00. These offer great “Bang for the Buck”.

A fast-cycling, semi-auto .22 LR rifle like the Savage A22 is great for shooting reactive targets.

GunsAmerica Digest has reviewed a variety of reactive rimfire target systems from Birchwood Casey. We recommend you read this detailed article Little Targets, Big Fun, by Jordan Michaels. He acquired four different steel target systems and tested them at his Texas range. Michales was impressed: “At $30-$55 a pop, Birchwood-Casey’s targets are small enough to be challenging and cheap enough to buy four or five for the price of one centerfire-rated target. They’re also light, portable, reactive, and easy to set up.”

Check out how these Birchwood Casey steel targets perform. These animated GIFs show actual shooting sessions with .22 LR rifles and pistols. The targets hold up well, though the black paint comes off. The reviewer notes: “You shouldn’t worry about durability as long as you stick to .22 LR. I shot the heck out of these targets with rifles and handguns using both standard and high-velocity cartridges, and I didn’t notice any denting or cracking.
Safety Considerations with Steel Reactive Targets
The tester said the targets worked best with a .22 LR ammo with at least 1000 fps MV at the targets. He tested with .22 LR pistols as close as 7 yards, and .22 LR rifles out to 100 yards. Be advised — when shooting steel targets at relatively close ranges ALWAYS wear full-coverage eye protection because ricochets and splash-backs are definite risks. Also comply with all range rules.

If the targets are going to be kept outside, however, keep an eye out for rust – the black paint comes off immediately.”

Do you have trouble seeing your bullet holes (on paper) when shooting past 400 yards? That’s a common issue even with premium ($1600+) high-magnification scopes. Here’s a target that solves that problem. A hit creates a larger black circle that’s much more visible than a plain bullet hole, making this target ideal for use at longer range (500 yards and beyond).

The 12″ square Birchwood Casey white background Sight-In Target displays a black “halo” around each hit (like the yellow circle on a conventional Shoot-N-C). Larger than bullet diameter, the “halos” can be easily seen with a high-magnification scope at long range (see video below). The self-adhesive target features four diamonds with contrasting red box centers. For precise aiming, you can position your cross-hairs to align with the corners of the boxes. Or, you can put a target dot sticker in the middle.

This white background grid target has five aiming points and a 1-inch grid overlay for quick and easy sight adjustments. It comes with target pasters that allow shooters to cover up bullet holes and continue using the target for added value. The White/Black Shoot-N-C 12″ Sight-In Targets come in 5-packs with 75 target pasters for $7.19 from MidwayUSA or $8.09 on Amazon.

Bullseye White Shoot-N-C Targets
If you prefer white circle targets, there are three Shoot-N-C options: 8″ diameter Shoot-N-C bullseye ($4.99/six), 12″ diameter Shoot-N-C bullseye ($7.19/five), and a larger 17.5″ Shoot-N-C bullseye ($12.79/five) with red diamond center.

These yellow-on-black targets are available in three sizes: 8″ square, 12″ square, and 17.5″ square.
If the targets are going to be kept outside, however, keep an eye out for rust – the black paint comes off immediately.”

We like to use the Birchwood Casey 2″ and 3″ orange “Target Spots” stick-on circles (with diamond centers) for shooting at 300 yards and beyond (photo right). These give you a very precise aiming point if you align your cross-hairs with the corners of the diamond. However, we know that some guys, particularly those whose scopes have “target-dot” reticles, prefer to have a small box for an aim point. In addition, the orange Target Spots are not a true “Day-Glo” color, so they may seem a little dull (low-contrast) when the target is in shadow.

For guys who want an ultra-high contrast target with a square box in the center, Birchwood Casey offers a series of neon green targets with box centers and spike-style extended vertical and horizontal lines (like on a compass). The manufacturer explains: “These adhesive Target Spots come in highly-visible Atomic Green. The crosshair design fulfills the needs of open-sight shooters along with scope users. Easily line up your open sights on the center square or lay the crosshairs along the vertical and horizontal diminishing lines.” You can also rotate the Atomic Green Target Spots 45° to create a diamond center with the crosshairs in an “X” pattern.

We’ve sampled these targets. The Atomic Green background is a true “Day-Glo” color (like safety signs) so these circles appear very bright on a target backer. These work well in low light. We won’t throw away our orange Target Spots, but these Atomic Green circles are a nice option. NOTE: Atomic Green spots are NOT “splatter” targets — a contrasting bright color does NOT appear around your bullet holes.

Here are products that the vast majority of shooters can use and afford. Birchwood Casey has four new portable metal target stands that can work with both paper and steel targets. Most of these stands are used with conventional shooter-supplied wood target frames, so perhaps they are best considered “target stand bases”. These provide a strong, durable all-metal base that is easily transported. All these new Birchwood Casey Target Stands have a $40.00 MSRP, with typical $30 street prices.

The Universal Gong Nested Stand uses standard 2×4 lumber for an upright and works well in conjunction with the Birchwood Casey 2-in-1 Gong Target Hanger to mount any metal target. The stand measures 20.5” wide x 20” deep and is 5” high.

The Swivel Leg Target Stand has two legs that swivel out at a 90° angle to the target holder for stability. The stand measures 21” wide x 4.5” high and the legs are 17” long. It uses standard dimension 1”x2” lumber for uprights. This is a good choice to hold wood frames with large paper targets.

The Adjustable Width Base Steel Target Stand accepts two standard dimension 1”x2” lumber as uprights to attach targets. The stand has two legs with four stake holes to secure the base to the ground for extra stability. The stand adjusts from 13” to 25” wide to fit a variety of backboards and targets.

The Scissor Target Stand quickly adjusts to most target sizes. The stand can be easily adjusted from 24” down to 8” wide. It is 20” deep, making it stable. The upright pockets accept standard dimension 1”x2” lumber to attach targets.
