eBook Versions of Classic Hunting and Adventure Titles

The Boone and Crockett Club has digitally re-mastered a series of classic hunting and adventure books. Works from Theodore Roosevelt, William T. Hornaday, Charles Sheldon, Frederick C. Selous and others are being converted to high-quality eBook versions for Kindle, Nook, iPad and other eReaders. Unlike many of older hunting and adventure books available elsewhere for eReaders, the B&C Classics series has been professionally converted to high-quality, true-digital publications. Many come complete with vintage photos and drawings not found in other editions.

Two titles are available right now in the new B&C Classics series: African Game Trails and Camp-Fires in the Canadian Rockies. Five more titles are in the works. Each book in the series was authored by a Club member in the late 1800s or early 1900s.

These “digitally-remastered” classic B&C titles are available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and the Apple iBookstore. Or, you can purchase direct from the Boone & Crockett online bookstore. A buyer is entitled to download the purchased publication and view it either on a computer or offline with an eReader compatible device such as a Kindle, Nook, Sony Reader, iPad, or netbook.

30 Cal Magnums Preferred by North American Big Game Hunters

30-caliber magnums are the chamberings of choice for North American big game hunters. Although the venerable .30-06 and .270 remain popular, Boone and Crockett Club records show that the 30-caliber magnums (of one variety or another) take more North American trophies than any other caliber/chambering. (Note: “30-caliber magnum” includes .300 Win Mag, .300 WSM, .300 Wby. Mag, 300 Ultra mag. Records do not distinguish specific 30-cal magnum chamberings.) Boone and Crockett compiled the data from records-book entries from 2007 through 2009. Surprisingly, the second most popular trophy-taker isn’t a firearm—it’s a bow.

Here are the most commonly used calibers across all Boone and Crockett categories over the past three years, along with percentages of trophy entries credited to each:

30-cal Magnum (all types)—18 percent
Bow/crossbow—16 percent
.270—12 percent
.30-06—11 percent
7mm Magnum—11 percent
Muzzleloader/shotgun—10 percent
6mm—3 percent
.338 Magnum—3 percent
.257—2 percent
.30-30—2 percent
.308—2 percent
.375 Magnum—2 percent
Other—8 percent

30-caliber magnum cartridges appear among the top three calibers for 11 of the 15 species recognized in Boone and Crockett trophy records. Species for which records are kept include: Whitetail deer, Coues’ whitetail deer, Blacktail deer, Mule deer, Black bear, Brown Bear/Grizzly, Pronghorn, Elk, Moose, Caribou, Bison, Muskox, Cougar, Rocky Mtn. Goat, Sheep (Bighorn, Dall’s, Desert, Stone’s).

Boone and Crockett Scoring Provided at Bass Pro Shops

Hunters can now have trophy-size animals measured (for record status), more easily. Starting this month, scoring on whitetail deer, mule deer, elk, bear and cougar will be offered as a free customer service at all 50 Bass Pro Shops stores. These outlets will have a Boone and Crockett Club associate measurer on staff. To find the store nearest you, go to www.basspro.com and click on “Store Locations.”

Keith Balfourd of Boone and Crocket Club states: “This partnership [with Bass Pro] provides millions of hunters with easy access to a certified measurer. It’s a new convenience spawned by demand — we’re seeing all-time high interest in our records program.”

Hunters can “green score” their own trophies by following guidelines at the Boone and Crockett Club Web site, www.booneandcrockettclub.com. If unofficial measurements are close to or above minimum scores, and the hunter would like to enter their trophy into the Boone and Crockett Club Awards Program ($40 entry fee), it must be scored by a trained measurer.

The Boone and Crockett Club accepts trophies taken in fair chase by all legal methods (i.e. firearm, archery, muzzleloader, etc.) including found, or “pick up,” trophies that meet or exceed minimum entry scores per species. Founded by Theodore Roosevelt in 1887, for more than a century Boone and Crockett Club has been a leader in records keeping, conservation, fair-chase hunting ethics and education.
