NSSF, the Firearm Industry Trade Association, has released a NEW and Improved Where To Shoot mobile App. This FREE mobile device App allows target shooters, hunters, and outdoor enthusiasts to locate shooting ranges throughout the USA. “Finding a safe, welcoming place to shoot should be simple,” said Joe Bartozzi, NSSF President/CEO. “The redesigned Where To Shoot App provides … accurate, up-to-date range information, training tools and more.”

Available for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices, the updated App provides fast, convenient access to the country’s most comprehensive directory of shooting ranges.

The Where To Shoot mobile App is available for FREE Download through the App Store and Google Play. Users can also search for ranges online at WhereToShoot.org.

A Faster Way to Discover Places to Shoot
The refreshed Where To Shoot app introduces a streamlined design and enhanced search tools that allow users to quickly find shooting facilities wherever they are — whether at home or traveling.

Key Features Include:

Nationwide Shooting Range Directory — Access one of the most comprehensive databases of shooting ranges in the United States.
Events and Training Opportunities — Discover shooting events, instructional programs and other opportunities to improve skills.
Mobile-Optimized Experience — Modern interface allows quick browsing and seamless range discovery.
Location-Based Search — Instantly find ranges near your location or search by ZIP code, city, or state.
Detailed Range Listings — View contact info, directions, and facility details before planning your visit.
Indoor and Outdoor Range Filters — Identify facilities with your preferred shooting environment.

“The Where To Shoot platform has long been one of the most valuable tools for connecting target shooters with ranges,” said John McNamara, NSSF Vice President, Member Services. “This redesigned app strengthens that connection by making it even easier for people to discover local facilities and for ranges to showcase the experiences and services they offer.”

NSSF Requests Range Owners to List Their Facilities
NSSF encourages shooting range owners and operators to add or update their listings free of charge at WhereToShoot.org. By keeping listings current, ranges can help shooters easily discover safe, well-managed shooting venues. Enthusiasts can also help expand the directory by encouraging ranges that are not yet listed to create a free listing.

Ballistics AE (Advanced Edition) is the most popular iOS ballistics program for many good reasons. It offers a full feature set with Ballistic Solver, Ballistic Comparison (with up to 8 projectiles), Target Log (records group sizes), Advanced WindKit, and more. The Ballistic: Advanced Edition software is easy to use, with nice controls. Underneath it all is the proven JBM Ballistics calculator. And here’s the kicker — this excellent mobile App software is now FREE to download and install on iPhones and iPads!

Full-featured and easy to use, Ballistics AE has been refined over many years, and it supplies rock-solid solutions derived from JBM Ballistics solver (created by James B. Millard). Unlike some other Apps, Ballistics AE is STABLE on iPhones (with various OS levels). What’s cool is that Ballistics AE is now available for FREE for both iPhones and iPads. This software is now provided by Federal Premium Ammunition, with in-App purchase functionality.

We’ve used the Ballistic: Advanced Edition program on an iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, and iPad, and it performed well. Here are some of the features we liked:

2. Controls are simple to use and (mostly) intuitive.

3. Handy comparison feature lets you compare ballistics for different projectiles side by side.

4. Advanced Wind Kit allows you to account for complex wind situations.

5. Projectile and BC Databases are very comprehensive.

Many shooters are familiar with ballistics tables, weather programs, and even wind meters for smart devices, but few may know about a very handy Leveling Tool that comes factory-installed on Apple iPhones. The leveling function is a little-known option in Apple’s Compass App. It works well for a multitude of tasks.

There are a numerous reasons that a leveling tool should be in every rifleman’s range bag. From leveling optics during mounting to figuring out how much extra compensation is going to be required for a tricky angled shot, knowing just how far off things are from plumb can go a long way towards realizing success in the field.

This writer has used the leveling app on his iPhone to level a rifle on a rest while at the range. It definitely worked for “field expedient” leveling duties. That’s especially important for long-range applications. Just one degree of cant (tilt) can move your point of impact 7 inches at 1000 yards.

Of course, the iPhone level doesn’t use an actual bubble to find angles. Rather, it relies on the device’s sophisticated accelerometer to do so, and with a great degree of accuracy. Navigating to the level is done by first selecting the Compass App (Utilities folder), at which point the device will need to be calibrated by rotating it a full 360 degrees. Once the compass is fully calibrated, simply make swipe LEFT gesture to bring up the level — it will start operating immediately. Swipe right to return to compass. NOTE: On some newer iPhones the Level feature is part of the Measure App, so to access it you go to Utilities > Measure, and it’s listed at the bottom.

From there, use is intuitive and easy, like most iPhone Apps. Switching from horizontal plane to vertical is done by simply changing the physical axis of the phone. How do you know when you’ve got things just right — well the entire lower half of the screen turns green when everything is perfectly level. You’ll also see a zero° read-out, like this:

Bottom Line: If you already own an iPhone, you should definitely give this App a try. The price is right (free), and for a wide variety of tasks the iPhone Level App is actually pretty handy.

Tactacam, builder of compact, waterproof video cameras, now offers a new system, the Tactacam FTS, that allows you to film directly through your rifle scope. The images you see can be recorded to your mobile device or smart phone as well as viewed live. We think this is an important technology for marksmanship training. In addition, this is great for hunters who may want to record a successful hunt sequence.

The Tactacam FTS combines the high definition video from your Tactacam camera with the high-power zoom of a rifle scope. This lets you remotely view and record live footage from your rifle on your smart phone. Simply couple your scope and your camera together with the Tactacam FTS components. Then sync the camera to the Tactacam APP on your smart phone for live viewing.

You continue to watch your target through the normal optical axis of the rifle scope. The camera records via the offset FTS camera mount. The output of the FTS camera system can then be viewed, in real time, via a live feed to a smart phone. After setup, the Tactacam FTS allows the riflescope to operate as normal without additional adjustment or modification.

4K Resolution, Remote Control, Slo-Mo, Wifi Viewing and More
Tactacam’s innovative camera systems allow easy, in-the-field recording of hunts and shooting sessions. The FTS mount can handle all Tactacam Solo, 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 cameras. The latest Tactacam 5.0 unit provides 4K resolution with outstanding image quality. Other features include Wifi and APP viewing options, remote control activation, slow motion, and live-streaming capabilities. The camera output can be viewed both in the App and on external WiFi-capable devices.

The Tactacam FTS system can attach to nearly any conventional rifle scope. This system is less expensive and easier-to-mount that most other through-the-scope viewing systems. Importantly, your valuable smart-phone remains separate, i.e. NOT attached to the rifle. Hence it cannot be harmed by recoil or muzzle blast.

Start with Ballistic AE, the number 1 (i.e. most installed) App for iOS systems. Ballistics AE (Advanced Edition) is the most popular iOS ballistics program for many good reasons. Full-featured and easy to use, Ballistics AE has been refined over many years, and it supplies rock-solid solutions derived from JBM Ballistics solver (created by James B. Millard). Unlike some other Apps, Ballistics AE is STABLE on iPhones (with various OS levels). What’s cool is that Ballistics AE is now on sale for $12.99.

We’ve used the Ballistic AE program on an iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, and iPad, and it performed well. Here are some of the features we liked:

1. Mirrors output from online version of JBM Ballistics we often use for initial calculations.

2. Controls are simple to use and (mostly) intuitive.

3. Handy comparison feature lets you compare ballistics for different projectiles side by side.

4. Advanced Wind Kit allows you to account for complex wind situations.

5. Projectile and BC Database is very comprehensive.

6. Software is regularly updated to match Apple OS changes.

Comprehensive Projectile Info and BCs
Ballistics AE has very complete data libraries. The program includes 5,000 projectiles, factory loads, military loads, and performance data points from leading manufacturers, military testing, and performance testing.

Ballistic Coefficient libraries include the latest commercial BC data, plus Applied Ballistics’ (Bryan Litz) custom G7 BCs, plus G7 military coefficients from Aberdeen Proving Grounds.

Navigating to the level is done by first selecting the Compass App, at which point the device will need to be calibrated by rotating it a full 360 degrees. Once the compass is fully calibrated, simply make right swipe gesture to bring up the level — it will start operating immediately.
