Shooting USA TV has a good show today. Shooting USA’s Wednesday Night episode features military rifle competition at Talladega Marksmanship in Alabama. Historic military battle rifles from the past century are competing — Garands, Springfields and a list of other period military battle rifles are on the firing line.

Each spring, the CMP hosts a Spring Classic Event at the Talladega Marksmanship Park. The 2025 CMP Talladega Spring Classic ran Tuesday, March 18 through Sunday, March 23, 2025. The event schedule included both rifle and pistol competition. Events included Garand/Springfield/Vintage/Modern Military, Rifle Marksmanship 101/M16 Match, Pistol Marksmanship 101/M9 Match, CMP Match Pistol 2700, CMP 80 Shot Matches, CMP EIC Service Rifle Match and more.

Competitors used electronic targets for pistol and rifle matches. Each firing point of the 500-acre facility is now equipped with a state-of-the-art, KTS electronic target and scoring monitor. Located beside the shooter, on the firing line, each monitor allows the competitor to see his/her shot value in a matter of seconds. Spectators can view the results in real time on large monitors.

After a long hiatus, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) Advanced Maintenance Classes (AMC) will return in 2024. These clinics, run by expert instructors, show students how to assemble vintage rifles. Those interested in the AMC may register through the CMP website. Registering for multiple classes is permitted, but no applicant will be selected for more than one slot.

The Advanced Maintenance Class (AMC) is a three-day course in Anniston, Alabama with training from the CMP Custom Shop staff. Topics such as head space, barrel installation, component purpose/function, general rifle assembly, rifle/component maintenance and various accuracy techniques will be covered using instructional videos and visual presentations. Along with classes for individuals, the Custom Shop will host four “Buddy Class” dates — reserved for applicants wishing to attend with a designated partner.

This is not an inexpensive program. Total cost for the 3-day 2024 AMC sessions will be $2,350 ($1,200 for tuition + $1,150 for Expert rifle). The $1,200 tuition fee will be billed immediately after purchasing the course from the CMP eStore (with $150 of class tuition fee considered as a nonrefundable “registration fee”).

CMP Advanced Maintenance Clinics 2024 Class Dates:

In conjunction with the classroom sessions, students will receive individualized instruction and assistance from Custom Shop staff. Students will also visit Talladega Marksmanship Park to view the grounds and test-fire their personally-crafted rifles.

NOTE: As the classes are very popular, registration will be based on a lottery system. Registration for the lottery will open November 27 and run through December 22, 2023.

The Fine Print:
Total cost for the 2024 AMC will be $2,350 ($1,200 for tuition + $1,150 for Expert rifle). The $1,200 tuition fee will be billed immediately after purchasing the course from the eStore ($150 of the class tuition fee is a nonrefundable “registration fee”). Late cancellations, made within 30 days of the class start date, will be subject to forfeiture of an additional $300. Deadline for class payment is 2/16/2024.

Registration Lottery:
Registrants will become part of an electronic lottery used to randomly assign the 20 available seats for each class date. An additional 20 participants will be assigned to a stand-by list for each date. These stand by lists have been established due to a historically high cancellation rate.

The COVID-19 Pandemic claims another victim — the 2021 CMP Western Games. The CMP announced that the 2021 CMP Western Games at Ben Avery in Phoenix, Arizona have been officially cancelled. Judy Legerski, CMP Board Chairman, stated: “Due to the severely limited number of participants allowed at the Ben Avery facility imposed by the State of Arizona, it is not feasible to hold an event at the facility”. The Games had been slated for March 12-21, 2021.

Arizona health restrictions allow only 10 persons per building regardless of building size, and allow no more than 50 people on the Highpower rifle range (including range officers/staff) despite the outdoor venue. That would make it very difficult to conduct the major Western Games matches. In addition this year no ammunition or rifle sales would be allowed. (The CMP marketplace was a big draw for Western Games participants each year.)

“These restrictions leave us no choice but to withdraw from the event”, Legerski said. “We had planned a full slate of events in Arizona, including CMP Games Rifle, EIC Service Rifle, multiple pistol matches, Vintage Sniper Rifle, Rimfire Sporter Rifle, and a series of rifle and pistol training courses.”

TALLADEGA SPRING CLASSIC (March 16-21) WILL REPLACE WESTERN GAMES THIS YEAR
To replace the 2021 Western Games, the CMP will host a series of rifle and pistol matches at the CMP Talladega Marksmanship Park in Alabama. The March 16-21 2021 Spring Classic event at Talladega will include a pistol 2700, a mid-range 3×600 rifle match, long range rifle clinic, and pistol Marksmanship 101 course. This Talladega Spring Classic will provide an opportunity for competitors to shoot a variety of new matches. Mrs. Legerski stated: “We are sorry that we cannot hold the Western Games this year. We look forward to returning to the great Ben Avery Range in Arizona in 2022.”
