<p>Erik Cortina has been fiddling around with his RCBS ChargeMaster and he discovered something interesting. Through a series of tests he determined that the ChargeMaster dispensed slightly more precise charges when he trickled the last few 10ths of a grain on to the RCBS pan. Erik wasn&#8217;t expecting this result, but he confirmed there may be a slight benefit to this trickling method (as opposed to allowing the ChargeMaster to dispense the full charge).</p>
<p>We should note that Erik&#8217;s preferred method of weighing powder is to first dispense a slightly lower charge with the RCBS, transfer the pan to a laboratory-class Sartorius magnetic force restoration scale, then trickle up with his Omega (Dandy Products) Powder Trickler. However, if you don&#8217;t have a $800+ laboratory-grade scale, you might just try trickling on to the ChargeMaster pan. You can see Erik&#8217;s test procedure in this video:</p>

<blockquote><p><strong>How to Turn Off the ChargeMaster&#8217;s Beep</strong><br />
By default, the ChargeMaster beeps when you tap a button, and when it completes dispensing a charge. Some users find this annoying. If you want to &#8220;defeat the beep&#8221;, there is a simple procedure, as Erik Cortina demonstrates at the 19&#8217;30&#8221; mark in the video.</p>
<p>First, press the &#8220;Cancel/STOP&#8221; button on the main keypad to halt any current operation. Then simply press and hold the &#8220;ZERO&#8221; key on the front of the ChargeMaster. This is the second button from the left, just below the display screen. You need to hold the &#8220;Zero&#8221; button for about five seconds. Then &#8220;BEEP OF&#8221; (OFF) will appear. Voilà, the beep is gone. To restore the beep sounds, simply repeat the process and &#8220;BEEP ON&#8221; will appear on the display.</p></blockquote>

In addition, Allan has cleverly fitted an inexpensive video camera to one end of his scale. This camera outputs a signal to Allan&#8217;s laptop computer, giving Allan a magnified, &#8220;big-screen&#8221; view of the pointer tip of his scale. That lets Allan observe ultra-small movements of the beam. With the hardware upgrades and video display, Allan has crafted a system with usable sensitivity to a single grain of Varget powder.</p>
<p><strong>Hardware &#8220;Mods&#8221; Enhance Scale Reliability and Sensitivity</strong><br />
To upgrade his scale, Allan first fabricated a new U-shaped pan suspension hanger on the end of the scale. This allowed the pan to center more reliably and consistently. Next Allan extended the pointer arm at the opposite end, and attached a very fine graduated vertical scale to provide a more precise visual read-out. This scale has marks corresponding to 0.1 grains (one-tenth of a grain).</p>
<p>To improve the function of the beam itself, Allan &#8220;cleaned-up&#8221; the knife edges on which the beam moves, and Allan also fabricated a simple &#8220;approach to weight&#8221; fixture (with foam cushion) that gives the beam a smoother transition as it nears max travel.</p>
<p><strong>Inexpensive Video Camera Displays on Laptop Screen</strong><br />
Allan&#8217;s real genius was in fitting an inexpensive video camera to display a magnified image of the pointer at the end of the beam. Seeing the &#8220;big picture&#8221; really helps get the best precision from the scale. Allan acquired a cheap web-cam and attached it via a simple bracket to the RCBS scale. A USB cable delivers the video output to Allan&#8217;s laptop. Allan says the web-cam cost less than $20.00 on eBay and required no special software. It was a &#8220;plug and go&#8221; installation. With the video camera running, the onscreen image is &#8220;super-sized&#8221; so Allan can track the smallest movements of the pointer tip. You can see how the whole system works in the video below. The final element in Allan&#8217;s high-tech balance beam scale system is a Targetmaster automatic trickler. This unique UK-made trickler is very advanced. It has two components &#8212; a dispenser, and a remote sensor that &#8220;watches&#8221; the movement of the balance beam. Allan pushes a button to start the powder flowing. As the load in the pan approaches the correct weight, an electric eye senses the position of the balance beam. Once the beam &#8220;hits the mark&#8221; for a correct load, the remote sensor shuts off the trickler. It sounds complicated but it works perfectly.</p>

In addition, having a scale handy lets you weigh and sort components during load development.</p>
<p>Many reloaders prefer &#8220;old-fashioned&#8221; balance beam scales for range use. They are relatively inexpensive and simple to use. With a beam scale, unlike electronic scales, you don&#8217;t have to worry about weak batteries or finding AC power. The problem when using any scale at an outdoor range is wind. Wind can cause powder to blow out of the pan and even a light breeze can actually cause a beam scale to perform erratically.</p>
<p><b>Beat the Breezes with a Wind Box for your Scale</b><br />
Forum member Boyd Allen has come up with a smart solution for reloaders who use scales outdoors &#8212; a windproof scale enclosure, aka &#8220;Wind Box&#8221;. This is something that can easily be built at home with common tools. Boyd explains: &#8220;Many guys have good set-ups for loading at the range, with clamping mounts for powder measure and press. But they lack a good enclosure for a scale. This is vitally important with beam scales because they have a lot of surface area to catch the wind. With much wind at all, the beam can oscillate to the point that is not really very usable. While a low-profile electronic scale may be less wind-sensitive, breezes DO affect weight read-outs on digital scales. And of course you always have the issue of blowing powder particles.&#8221;</p>

<p>Boyd Allen has used his Wind Box successfully for many seasons. He explains: &#8220;Some time ago, I got this idea, and was fortunate enough to have a friend, Ed Hellam, who liked the idea well enough to build us both one. He did a fine job, but since this was the prototype there was at least one lesson to learn. The original viewing pane was Plexiglass, and I discovered that it would hold enough static charge to throw the scale off 0.1 grains, so another friend, Bob Smith, modified my Wind Box, replacing the Plexiglass with a tempered glass faceplate. Thank you Ed and Bob&#8230;.</p>
<p>The essence of the idea is to have a scale set up in a box with a clear cover that can be opened and closed. On one side the trickler handle/control emerges through a &#8216;just big enough&#8217; hole. You raise the cover, add a sub-target-weight thrown charge to the pan, and then close the cover. With the cover secure, the set-up is protected from the wind, and you can now trickle up to your desired charge. It works very well. The scale in the photo is an old <a href="http://us.ohaus.com/us/en/home.aspx" target="new">Ohaus</a> that I picked up. It is actually more sensitive than my RCBS 10-10 and works fine. You can adapt this Wind Box design to any beam scale, or portable electronic scale. Simply adjust the dimensions to fit your particular scale and trickler.&#8221;</p>

However, they can be frustrating to use for a variety of reasons &#8212; e.g. the tube is too short, or the trickler is too low, or the unit isn&#8217;t stable enough, or the powder volume isn&#8217;t adequate. Well, the inventors of the <a href="http://www.omegapowdertrickler.com/Home_Page.php" target="new">Omega Powered Powder Trickler</a> have considered all those practical shortcomings in existing tricklers, and built a superior product &#8212; a &#8220;better mouse trap.&#8221;</p>
<p>Every aspect of the new $55.00 Omega powered trickler (from <a href="http://www.omegapowdertrickler.com/Home_Page.php" target="new">Dandy Products LLC</a>) shows smart thinking. First, hopper height can be adjusted from 1/2&#8243; to 5.5&#8243; high. The tube is long enough to reach the middle of large-footprint scales such as the Denver Instrument MXX-123. And the outer end of the tube is cut at an angle, so you can see the powder kernels as they flow out &#8212; no more surprise clumps that raise your charge 0.2 grains. The powder hopper itself is bigger than most, holding a full 1000 grains. That lets you load all afternoon without having to constantly replenish your trickler.</p>

<p>In practice, the Omega trickler is easy to use. It is reasonably fast, while being as precise as anything on the market. The unit is controlled by a two-button control pad, with a black button for slow feed and red button for fast feed. You can use the fast button to load the bulk of reloading powder and then use the slow button to maximize the accuracy of your load. The control pad is connected to the dispenser by a 24&#8243; cable. That two-foot cable run allows plenty of trickler placement options on your bench. Posting on <a href="http://www.24hourcampfire.com/" target="new">24HourCampfire.com</a>, JasonK gave the Omega Trickler high marks: &#8220;This thing rocks! It can trickle fast, it can trickle slow, it can drop a kernel or two at a time. After ordering my Omega I quickly shopped for an Acculab VIC-123 scale, accurate to within .02 grains.&#8221;</p>
<p>Another Omega user, In2Deep, writes: &#8220;You can actually tap the low-speed button and drop kernels while watching the scale. After a little practice it only takes a few seconds to trickle up a load. Using an Acculab 123 scale, it can drop charges that repeatedly read down to around 4 one-hundredth&#8217;s of a grain. It turned out to be a tool that really works and saves time. There are rubber feet on the unit and surprisingly it does not cause interference with the digital scale which is often mentioned as a problem with most of the vibratory tricklers. Not many products are even worth the time to do a testimonial but this is a winner[.]&#8221;</p>
<p>Forum member Barry O (aka TheBlueEyedBear) has been using an Omega Trickler for a while, and he currently has a second-generation (upgraded) unit on his bench. Barry likes the unit, with some reservations. Barry tells us: &#8220;it took me some time to get used to it. One main gripe is the length of time it takes to get the thing primed and ready to dispense powder. But after that, not too bad. I still use my trusty tweezers for fine tuning loads.&#8221;</p>

For reloders using balance-beam scales, Omega offers a clever portable prism that makes it much easier to see the tip of the balance beam, when the scale is on the benchtop. Omega&#8217;s Handy View accessory mounts a prism in a plastic stand. The prism changes the sightline so you can easily monitor the beam tip without having to bend down to see the beam alignment marks.</p>
<p>The prism slides up/down and swivels (around horizontal axis) to allow adjustment of viewing angle. It is a simple set-up, but it really works, allowing you to monitor scale beam movement with greater precision (and less neck strain). The Handy View costs $17.95, and is offered with either a yellow stand or clear plastic stand. You can see how the Handy View works in the video below.</p>
