2025 Rimfire Sporter Match Will Feature Electronic Targets

cmp camp perry petrarca match electronic kongsberg kts targets

Story based on report by Ashley Dugan, CMP Staff Writer
For the first time, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) will utilize outdoor electronic targets for the 2025 National Rimfire Sporter Rifle Match, set for July 20 at the Camp Perry National Guard Training Facility in Port Clinton, Ohio. Unlike previous years, the 2025 National Rimfire Sporter event will be held on Camp Perry’s Petrarca Range, which is equipped with CMP’s eTargets year-round. The range features more conveniences, such as a covered firing line and adjacent parking.

cmp camp perry petrarca match electronic kongsberg kts targets
For the first time, the CMP National Rimfire Sporter Match will utilize electronic targets on the Petraca Range. Monitors placed alongside each competitor will instantly show shot placements during the match, while suspended displays above the firing line will allow spectators to follow action in real time.

“The change to eTargets should improve the experience for the competitors”, said Brian Williams, CMP’s Highpower Manager. “The matches should run faster, without the need to hang targets and do the scoring.”

The National Rimfire Sporter Match is open to both adults and juniors of all experience levels. Using .22 LR rifles at 25 and 50, match participants traditionally shoot in three classes: Open Sight (O), Telescope Sight (T) and Tactical Unlimited (TU). Due to high demand, for 2025 the CMP has added a new M-class so competitors can use U.S. military rimfire training rifles.

Registration for the 2025 National Matches opens March 1, 2025. The 2025 National Rifle Matches will run July 22 through August 3, 2025. The CMP will employ eTargets for all Highpower rifle matches, National Trophy rifle competitions and rifle Games events. The target system will also be used for National Mid-Range and Long Range Matches, August 4-9, 2025. CLICK HERE to learn more about the National Rimfire Sporter Rifle Match and other National Matches events.

About CMP Kongsberg Electronic Targets
The CMP’s outdoor electronic targets employ Kongsberg Target System (KTS) technology. The system includes monitors at each firing point that instantly display accurate shot scores. The mobile version of the KTS system, which has been featured at CMP Travel Games events and the National Matches highpower series for the last several years, will be the applied targets for the 2025 National Matches.

As another advantage, the eTarget system at the National Matches will include the KTS Shooter’s Journal, which keeps a log of each individual’s shots/scores on the firing line.

Fun Competition on a Budget — Rimfire Sporter Matches

BRRC Rimfire Sporter CMP match

Readers often ask us: “Is there an inexpensive way I can get started in position shooting?” The answer is “yes” — across the country CMP-affiliated clubs host Rimfire Sporter matches. You can use a wide variety of .22 LR rimfire rifles — manual actions (such as a Winchester model 52) or semi-automatics (such as a Ruger 10/22). There are prone, sitting/kneeling, and standing stages. CMP rules provide separate classifications for scoped rifles, open-sighted rifles, and aperature-sighted rifles. The matches are fun, the ammo is inexpensive, and everyone has a good time while improving their marksmanship.

BRRC Rimfire Sporter CMP match

The rapid-fire sitting or kneeling stage of a CMP-sanctioned .22 Sporter Match consists of two, 5-shot strings. A manually-operated or semi-automatic rifle may be used for this match.

This video shows the sitting/kneeling rapid-fire stage of a Rimfire Sporter match.

Our friend Dennis Santiago helps run CMP Rimfire Sporter Matches in Southern California. Dennis observes: “You want something challenging? Well that X-Ring 50 yards away is the diameter of a 50 cent piece, and there are people out there that can womp that thing with iron sights.”

BRRC Rimfire Sporter CMP match

Dennis notes: “There are six (6) stages of fire on a tough little target. Notice the rifles that can be used run the gamut from pump and bolt actions to variations on the semi-auto theme. All still require a good eye and a steady hold to earn one’s bragging rights for the day. A match takes about an hour and a half per relay. The slowest part of the match is initial sighting in. It’ll take longer than the allocated 5 minutes for the typical first timer coming to a club match.”

At Dennis’s Burbank Rifle & Revolver Club (BRRC), procedures are modified a little bit: “What we typically do at BRRC is run two relays. Experienced competitors shoot per the full rulebook. New shooters are afforded a bit more relaxed environment to make the experience more fun and inviting. We do the same thing in our M-1 Garand Clinic/Match series.”

Rimfire Sporter Match Basics
The CMP Rimfire Sporter Rifle Match is an inexpensive, fun-oriented competition using .22 caliber sporter rifles (plinking and small game rifles) commonly owned by most gun enthusiasts. To compete, all you need is a basic rifle, safety gear, and ammunition. No fancy, high-dollar rifles are required.

The event is shot with standard sporter-type, rimfire rifles weighing no more than 7 ½ lbs, with sights and sling. Rifles may be manually-operated or semi-automatic. Shooters with manually-operated actions are given extra time in the rapid-fire stage to compensate for the difference. (See Video).

There are three classes of competition — the standard “O Class” for open-sighted rifles, “T-Class” for telescope-sighted and rear aperture-sighted rifles and “Tactical Rimfire” class, which is a .22 caliber A4 or AR15 style rifle. Firing for all classes is done at 50 and 25 yards on a target with a 1.78″ ten-ring and an 18″ outer one-ring. Even new shooters can get hits on this target, but it’s still tough enough that no one yet has fired a perfect 600×600 score.

The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) has a CMP Guide to Rimfire Sporter Shooting. This FREE, 50-page digital publication covers equipment, positions, course of fire, rules, scoring and much more. You’ll find helpful “how-to” sections on aiming, sight picture, hold control, and trigger control. Reading these instructional sections can benefit any prone or three-position competitive shooter.

Electronic Targets for 2025 CMP National Rifle Matches

CMP camp perry kongsberg etarget electronic 2025 national matches

Story based on report by Ashley Dugan, CMP Staff Writer
After years of testing, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), has announced “full use” of eTargets at the 2025 National Rifle Matches at Camp Perry, which run July 20 through August 9, 2025. The advanced Kongsberg eTargets will be used at all Highpower rifle matches, National Trophy Rifle competitions, and Rifle Games events. In addition the eTargets will be used for the Rimfire Sporter Match on July 20 and the National Mid/Long Range Matches in August. The use of eTargets eliminates the need for pit duty, drastically cutting down the duration of each match. “Shooting on eTargets is just a better experience for all competitors” notes Brian Williams, CMP Highpower manager.

Visit the CMP Electronic Targets Page for a video showing how the eTarget system works.

The CMP’s Kongsberg Target System (KTS) registers shots with extreme precision. The system includes monitors at each firing point so competitors can instantly see the location and score for their shots — they don’t have to wait for a target to be pulled and marked. The use of the targets also eliminates the need for pit duty, drastically cutting down the duration of each match. The 2025 National Matches will be held on the historic ranges at the Camp Perry National Guard Training Facility in Port Clinton, Ohio. Learn more at Thecmp.org/cmp-national-matches.

CMP camp perry kongsberg etarget electronic 2025 national matches

Brian Williams, CMP Highpower manager stated: “We have utilized this system for years, and during that time, we have made countless upgrades and improvements. We believe that we now offer the most accurate, easiest to use eTarget system available [giving] competitors the very best system interface. Competitors have been asking for this for years, and we have spent a great deal of time and energy getting the system ready to be used on the biggest stage in competitive shooting”.

The KTS system has been permanently installed at CMP’s Talladega Marksmanship Park as well as on Camp Perry’s Petrarca Range in Ohio. The mobile version of the KTS system, featured at CMP Travel Games events, will be the eTarget types used at most of the 2025 National Matches.

“With an increasing number of affiliate local clubs converting to eTarget systems, there is a growing expectation that the National Matches should be conducted this way,” Williams addedd. As another advantage, the eTarget system at the National Matches will include the KTS Shooter’s Journal, which keeps a log of each individual’s shots/scores on the firing line.

NTIT Team Match — “Rattle Battle” at Camp Perry

CMP Camp Perry Rattle Battle NTIT Infantry Trophy Team Match Video

The CMP’s National Trophy Infantry Team Match (NTIT) has been a staple at the National Matches since 1922. Also known as the “Rattle Battle,” the event is one of the most unique in the competitive rifling world — scoring is based on how many hits six-person teams can score on a bank of targets during a series of 50-second firing periods at four yardages.

Watch CMP ‘Rattle Battle’ Video — 50 Seconds of Rapid Fire…

Teams fire upon eight silhouette targets from 600, 500, 300 and 200 yards during successive 50-second periods. After each rapid-fire string, team members move forward (to the next-closest distance) carrying all equipment from firing line to firing line. The video shows the California Grizzlies, one of the top junior squads. The lead photo shows the U.S. Army Reserve (USAR) Team in action during the NTIT match. See more in USAR “Rattle Battle” Video.

Camp Perry M1 Garand Competition — Vintage Military Rifle

The John C. Garand match is a Camp Perry classic. Note the signature Garand clip in the air.

The CMP hosts the popular M1 Garand Match as well as the Springfield M1A Match. This writer’s father carried a Garand in WWII — reason enough for me to want one. But I also loved the look, feel, and heft of this classic American battle rifle. And the unique “Ping” of the ejected en-bloc clip is music to the ears of Garand fans. Some folks own an M1 Garand for the history, while others enjoy competing with this old war-horse. The CMP’s John C. Garand Match is one of the most popular events at Camp Perry every year. There are other vintage military rifle matches.

One of the most popular annual Camp Perry events, the Rimfire Sporter Rifle match features .22 LR competition in open sights (O-Class), telescopic (T-Class) and tactical/unlimited (TU) classes, fired at 25 and 50 yards. A CMP Rimfire Clinic will be held prior to the match.

Service Rifle Matches — AR-Platform Rifles, Now with Optics

CMP Camp Perry National Matches Long Range Pistol Rifle Commercial Row History

Service Rifle shooting is fun yet challenging. You need to develop skills with multiple positions and be able to make rapid wind calls. However, the modern AR-based service rifle is affordable and has relatively low recoil. Highly-customizable, modern service rifles can be fitted with adjustable stocks and optional magnified optics. Older military rifles, such as the M1A and M1 Garand, offer different challenges with heavier-recoiling cartridges, greater weights, and classic iron sights. Hi-Lux asked competitors at Camp Perry during CMP’s 2021 summer games what they enjoyed most about competition with service rifles and Military rifles such as the M1 Garand. The shooters’ responses had four key themes: Self-Improvement, Comradery, History (enjoying shooting rifles with heritage), and Challenge.

Camp Perry Bullseye Pistol Competition

Camp Perry Pistol bullseye

Camp Perry hosts the most prestigious annual trophy matches in our nation’s history. And in a venue renowned for service rifle matches, the sport of precision pistol is no less important, no less challenging, and no less respected. The National Trophy Pistol Matches are all about traditional handgunning — the stance, the intense concentration, and of course, the one-handed grip. It’s all unmistakable as the game of Bullseye Pistol. Every year there are 20+ match trophies for the top Bullseye Pistol shooters, both military and civilian. And the very best will claim National Match Trophies and receive the President’s 100 Tab.

History of Camp Perry

“In the year 1907 the machinery of the National Matches, now grown to immense proportions, was moved to the mammoth new range at Camp Perry.”
—James Drain, Arms and the Man, August 1911

Federal legislation originally launched the National Matches. The 1903 legislation also established the National Matches, commissioned the National Trophy and provided funding to support the Matches. The National Matches have been held at Camp Perry since 1907. The range is located along the shores of Lake Erie in northern Ohio near Port Clinton. The site was first acquired in 1906, in response to the need for a larger facility for military training and the NRA’s shooting programs. The original land for Camp Perry was purchased in 1906, and the reservation was named after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, the American naval commander who won the Battle of Put-in-Bay during the War of 1812.

NRA National Matches

On August 19, 1907, Cpl. L. B. Jarrett fired the first shot at the new Camp Perry Training Site. And that year, 1907, Camp Perry held its first National Pistol and Rifle Championship events. This location has hosted the annual National Matches ever since. Typically over 4,000 competitors attend the National Matches each year, making it the most popular shooting competition in the western hemisphere.

Garand and Vintage Military Rifle Matches

Among the most popular events at the Camp Perry National Matches are the Garand and Vintage Military Rifle matches. This summer, classic military rifles will fill the firing lines at Camp Perry. The Garand, Springfield, Vintage and Modern Military Match (GSMM) is set to start on Thursday, August 1, 2024 with the one-day M1A Match on Sunday, August 3, 2024. (See CMP Camp Perry 2024 Calendar.) Some participants will shoot just one rifle type, but there is also a combined GSMM 4-Gun Aggregate. The Vintage Sniper Match, set for August 4th, will include a new category — Vietnam Era. NOTE: the Springfield Armory M1A event is now the McKee Memorial Match (M14 Heritage Match), sponsored by Fulton Armory.

Rimfire Sporter Rifle Match

One of the most popular events of the National Games events, the Rimfire Sporter Rifle match features .22 caliber competition at 25 and 50 yards. There are three (3) classes: open sights (O-Class), telescopic (T-Class) and tactical/unlimited (TU) classes, fired at 50 and 25 yards. The event is perfect both for novice shooters and for experienced competitors who want to compete with a simple, affordable .22 LR rifle.

A paired Junior Team Match is also on the schedule for young competitors, along with an assortment of vintage and modern military rifle events like the John C. Garand, Springfield and Vintage Sniper matches for individuals at every stage of their marksmanship abilities. A 4-man team event and three 80-shot matches will appeal to those looking for more high power rifle events, each fired on CMP’s line of outdoor electronic targets.

Mid-Range and Long Range Rifle Matches

The CMP’s National Long Range series features 10 individual and team competitions. Returning in 2024 is the Mid-Range event (with a course of fire consisting of three rounds of 20 shots slow prone at 600 yards), along with Long Range matches. These are all open to Match Rifle, Service Rifle, Palma Rifle, F-Open, F-TR or AR Tactical categories. Long Range Matches are fired on Camp Perry’s 1000-yard Viale Range.

The fan-favorite GSSF GLOCK National Challenge will be returning to the schedule in 2024, while the Service Revolver EIC Match has been renamed the Philip Hemphill Memorial Service Revolver EIC Match in honor of Philip Hemphill — a repeat national champion lost in late 2023.

Sunday Gunday: Guns of the October CMP Western Games

CMP Western Games October Highpower high power rifle M1 Carbine Garand Sniper match

The CMP Western Games “Fall Classic” event — featuring CMP Highpower Rifle and CMP Pistol Matches — takes place next week, October 10-15, 2023 at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility near Phoenix, Arizona. This year, the CMP decided to move the Western CMP Games back to its original October timeslot. Although the CMP’s most recent Western Games were held in March of 2023, there will also be a fall Western Games this year, as was the tradition in past years.

CMP Western Games October Highpower high power rifle M1 Carbine Garand Sniper match

The decision to move Western Games back to October was reached after the CMP conducted a survey of competitors. Though the results (155 submissions) indicated spring was favorable (65%) versus fall (34%), the final decision was based on cost to host the event. Spring training for baseball causes inflated expenses for hotels, rental cars, and flights in the earlier months of the year. An October event allows more affordable travel/accommodations for Western Games participants. That should allow more competitors to enjoy the events at Ben Avery.

The 2023 October Western Games will have a condensed schedule of events:

Garand, Springfield, Vintage & Modern Military Matches
Carbine Match
Rimfire Sporter Match
Mid-Range 3X600
80 Shot Rifle
2-Man Rifle Team
EIC Service Rifle

CMP Match Pistol 2700
EIC Service Pistol
.22 Rimfire Pistol
EIC Service Revolver
Military & Police Service Pistol
and 1911 As-Issued Pistol Match

The Western CMP Games will feature three days of Garand/Springfield/Vintage & Modern Military Matches, a Carbine Match, a Rimfire Sporter Match, a Vintage Sniper Match, and a Rifle Basic Class. The CMP Highpower Rifle Matches include the CMP Team HP Clinic with Live Fire, a 4-Man Team Match, three days of CMP 800 Aggregate Matches and a CMP Service Rifle EIC Match. The Highpower Rifle portion of the Western Fall Classic will include a 2-Man Team Match, two days of CMP 800 Aggregate Matches, a CMP Service Rifle EIC Match and a Mid-Range 3×600 event. For educational purposes, a Rifle & Pistol Marksmanship 101 Classes with introductory EIC Matches are also part of the October lineup. There will also be a GSM New Shooter Clinic, a Highpower Rifle Clinic, and an M1 Maintenance Clinic.

Handgun shooters can compete in 4 days of Pistol Matches including CMP Match Pistol 2700, CMP .22 Rimfire Pistol EIC Match, CMP EIC Service Pistol Match, CMP 1911 As-Issued Pistol Match, Military & Police Service Pistol Match and the NEW CMP Service Revolver EIC Match.

The CMP M1 Carbine Match is part of the CMP Games program that already includes Garand, Springfield and Vintage Military Rifle Matches. “As-issued” U. S. Military M1 Carbines are fired over a 45-shot course of fire at 100 yards on either the old military “A” target or the “SR” target. The course includes 5 sighters and 10 shots for record prone slow fire in 15 minutes, a 10-shot rapid fire prone series in 60 seconds, a 10-shot rapid fire sitting series in 60 seconds and 10 shots slow fire standing in 10 minutes.

The CMP National Rimfire Sporter Match is a fun competition with affordable smallbore rifles with either scopes or iron sights. All you need are a .22 LR rifle, sling, and ammo.

Each year, the Rimfire Sporter Match attracts hundreds of shooters to Camp Perry on the shores of Lake Erie. If there is a single CMP event at Camp Perry that offers the most diverse group of competitors (of all ages), and the lowest cost of entry, that would be the annual Rimfire Sporter Match.

This year’s summer match was held on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at the Viale Range during the first weekend of the National Match Schedule at Camp Perry. One of the most popular annual Camp Perry events, the Rimfire Sporter Rifle match features .22 LR competition in open sights (O-Class), telescopic (T-Class) and tactical/unlimited (TU) classes, fired at 25 and 50 yards. A CMP/AMU Rimfire Sporter Small Arms Firing School was held on July 7, 2023.

FREE GUIDE: 48-Page CMP Guide to Rimfire Sporter Shooting »

The Rimfire Sporter Match is for smallbore rifles that weigh 7 1/2 pounds or less with sights. Firing is done at 25 and 50 yards in prone, sitting and standing positions, in slow and rapid fire modes. The CMP has a special smart-phone App that will help speed up scoring.

Rifles may be manually operated or semi-automatic, in three classes: the standard “O Class” for open-sighted rifles, “T-Class” for telescope-sighted rifles, and the “Tactical Rimfire” Class. Firing is done at 50 and 25 yards on a target with a 1.78″ ten-ring. The target is simple enough for a beginner to hit, yet challenging enough that only one competitor in the history of the match has ever fired a perfect 600 score.

Rimfire Sporter Course of Fire

At the Rimfire Sporter Match, competitors complete slow fire prone, rapid fire prone, slow fire sitting or kneeling, rapid fire sitting or kneeling, slow fire standing, and rapid fire standing shot sequences.

Special target shooting equipment, shooting jackets, or shooting gloves are not permitted, but you can bring a spotting scope and ground cloth or shooting mat. The firing points have grass (sometimes a bit wet with rain). Competitors are strongly urged to wear hearing and eye protection. Assistance for disabled competitors is provided.

Camp Perry National Matches — Changes in Store for 2023

Camp Perry cmp rimfire sporter 2023

The CMP 2023 National Matches will take place at Camp Perry from July 7 through August 5, 2023. Camp Perry is a National Guard facility located on the shore of Lake Erie in northern Ohio near Port Clinton.

The annual Camp Perry National Matches have evolved — the 2023 event calendar has been modified from previous years – allowing overlapping disciplines and new matches, along with updates to the ranges themselves to improve the competition experience. SEE Full Camp Perry NM Calendar.

Unlike past years, the National Matches will now begin with Smallbore and Rimfire Sporter Rifle events, rather than Pistol matches. The National Smallbore rifle series will utilize electronic targets for the first time in its history, and the CMP Highpower Rifle Championships will now also be fired on electronic targets, with three 80-shot matches, followed by a 4-Man team event. The CMP National Trophy Rifles matches will follow and continue to be fired on paper targets.

Other changes for 2023 include the assembly of Pistol target lines at 25 and 50 yards to eliminate moving between strings. Also, an extra category has been added to the GSSF GLOCK National Pistol Challenge. Along with Stock, Unlimited and Rimfire classes, the match will now facilitate a Modular Optic System (MOS) Configuration category.
