Handy Wire Clip Secures Cartridge Box Lids
Here’s a handy invention by Forum member RayJay from Georgia. It’s a simple wire clip that will hold the lid of your plastic ammo box fully open during use. RayJay explains: “Everybody probably uses the cheap plastic cartridge cases. The only problem I have with them is the lid is always in the way and sometimes when trying to open the lid farther the cartridge box tips and you can dump out the cases. I did some cogitating and came up with these .061″ music wire clips. They work great and the unexpected benefit is that the cases are more stable while sitting at the bench.”
RayJay adds: “The round wire is ideal because it still allows a cartridge to fit in the hole where the clip is placed. Now all I need to do is make another 15 or 20 so I can have one in every case I own.”

Timing is everything.
(I just finished sticking 1″ pieces of Velcro on the cases I’m hauling to Perry this weekend… took me awhile to think of it, then I see this. Thanks RayJay!)
The simple solutions are always the best.
Picked up some .062″ music wire, bent a clip, used it this morning for the first time: works perfect! Clip(s) can be kept in each individual box, even with ammo in place: plenty of clearance.
Thanks rayjay you need to post this on GON.
Coat hanger to the rescue!
Second on Dee’s comment about using coat hangers. I have no idea where I’d find “.06x music wire” but I know right where to find some old coat hangers. Super minimum hassle.
I’ve used a plastic coated paper clip on the MTM rimfire “competition” ammo boxes for years. works like a charm and supply is endless and readily available
Since writing my comment 5 years ago, I’ve since replaced my 50 round box’s with the new hinge top, made by MTM, so no longer any need for the spring clips. I had some problems with them “jumping” out & began replacing them with wooden dowells to keep the lids open. The ultimate solution is the hinge top box’s.
Easier solution is simply split ~90% of the hinge with a box cutter.
The new MTM boxes have a hinge, works great. Lasts longer and wont flip back. Price stayed the same too.
staples for electric wire works too.
