One of the CMP’s most popular competitions is the M1 Carbine Match. The little carbines are easy to hold and easy to shoot, with relatively low recoil compared to an M1 Garand or M1903 shooting the full-power .30-06 cartridge. Unfortunately, genuine GI-issue M1 Carbines are now hard to find at affordable prices. The CMP has announced: “CMP’S Carbine Inventory has been exhausted and we do not expect to receive any additional shipments.” Authentic surplus U.S. Military M1 Carbines are selling for $1600 to $3500 these days on Gunbroker.com.

Over the years, the CMP has offered several different grades of M1 Carbines, from serviceable to excellent condition. Inventories have been shrinking in recent years, but now and then the CMP is offers M1 Carbines on its CMP Auction website. There is an excellent history of the M1 Carbine (all versions) on the Pew Pew Tactical website. There are many historical photos, along with videos of two M1 Carbine variants being tested in the field.
The first M1 Carbines were delivered in mid-1942, with initial priority given to troops in the European theatre of war. According to the CMP: “The M1 Carbine was designed primarily to offer noncombat troops a better defensive weapon than a pistol or submachine gun, with greater accuracy and range, but without the recoil, cost, or weight of a full-power infantry rifle. The carbine was also easier for less experienced soldiers and smaller-framed people to fire than the .30 caliber infantry rifles of the day. The carbine was more convenient to carry for officers, NCOs, or specialists encumbered with weapons, field glasses, radios, or other gear. Tankers, drivers, artillery crews, mortar crews, and other personnel were also issued the M1 Carbine in lieu of the larger, heavier M1 Garand. Belatedly, a folding-stock version of the M1 Carbine was developed, after a request was made for a compact and light infantry arm for airborne troops.”

Military M1 Carbines are fired over a 45-shot course of fire at 100 yards on either the old military “A” target or the “SR” target. The course includes 5 sighters and 10 shots for record prone slow fire in 15 minutes, a 10-shot rapid fire prone series in 60 seconds, a 10-shot rapid fire sitting series in 60 seconds and 10 shots slow fire standing in 10 minutes.

Thankfully, you don’t need to source a real WWII-era M1 to enjoy CMP M1 Matches. You can now get a brand new, American-made M1 Carbine clone significantly less than the price of old CMP rifle. Sportsman’s Warehouse sells American-made KAHR Auto Ordnance .30-Caliber M1 Carbines that look, feel, and shoot just like the originals, for a lot less money. There are two versions:

To optimize your loads and to generate precise ballistics tables, you need a quality chronograph. Having precise readings of bullet muzzle velocities lets you calculate ES and SD to determine the most repeatable load with least vertical dispersion. Very accurate velocity data is also essential to created a precise drop table for long range and to predict the effect of winds. There are many good chronographs on the market, ranging in price from around $100 to $1000, not counting tripods.
Today’s Saturday Movie showcase features a variety of modern chronographs. We include comparison tests, as well as video reviews of the new, small-format Bulletseeker Mach 4 and AndiScan Micro A2 Doppler Radar chronographs. If you are in the market for a new chronograph and have the resources, you should definitely consider one of these new small chronos, which are easy to set-up and can be mounted directly to your rifle. For those with a limited budget, MagnetoSpeeds still offer great performance for the price. However, you may have to conduct load tuning separately with the MagnetoSpeed removed.
Triple Chronograph Comparison Test
LabRadar, MagnetoSpeed, and Shooting Chrony Alpha Master
This video has an interesting comparison test with three chronograph devices operating at the same time. A Shooting Chrony Alpha Master unit was set up downrange, while a modern LabRadar was placed to the right side of the rifle. On the barrel of the rifle a MagnetoSpeed chrono was attached. This allowed the tester to compare shot velocity values from all three chrono systems at the same time. The video creator explained: “I was curious to see if my old [Shooting Chrony] chronograph could still give me useful velocity information compared to using the newer MagnetoSpeed and LabRadar.”

In this 78-minute video, experts from Vortex explaining how modern chronographs work. The discussion covers the technical features of various chronographs. Multi-time F-Class National Champion Ian Klemm and former sniper Tony Palzkill examine different chronograph types, explaining how they operate. Ian discusses the pros and cons of different chronograph designs, and provides many good tips for chronograph owners. This 78-minute discussion covers multiple chronograph designs, including LabRadar, MagnetoSpeed, and Caldwell Ballistic Precision. MagnetoSpeed vs. Caldwell Ballistic Precision Chronograph
In this video the host compares a MagnetoSpeed with an older, first generation Caldwell Ballistic Precision Chronograph, mounted a few yards downrange on a tripod. The tester favored the Magnetospeed saying it was “incredibly accurate” while being much easier to set up and transport. He also says the MagnetoSpeed App was very “user-friendly”.

Comparison test with the Bulletseeker Mach 4 and LabRadar

In this video, our friend F-Class John tests the innovative, ultra-compact AndiScan Micro A2 Doppler radar chronograph. This unit is small enough that it can be fitted to your rifle, or attached to a front rest or mini tripod. John tested an early pre-production model. The production model is now available for 800 Euros on the SQI-AndiX eShop. The manufacturer notes: “The next large 2023 production series is expected to be ready by the end of February.”

JKL Inertial Trigger for LabRadar
The JKL Inertial Trigger for the LabRadar is an easy-to-use, inertial-driven trigger that activates simply from the recoil of your gun. Rather than activate by sound or Doppler reading, the JKL Trigger works from the rifle’s instantaneous recoil pulse when a shot is fired. The unit consists of a small rectangular pad attached to a long audio cable. All you do is plug in the audio cable, attach the pad to your gun with the provided hook and loop (Velcro) material. Then (important), you must change the LabRadar trigger settings from “Doppler” to “Trigger”. The unit works great and is easy to set up.

AR-platform rifles run dirty — very dirty. The gas system blows carbon and powder residues back into the action and into the bolt carrier group. That’s why you need to clean your ARs regularly, and you have to pay special attention to the nooks and crannies in the bolt and bolt carrer. The majority of AR failures we’ve witnessed have been from a combination of lube, carbon, and tiny brass shavings that collected in the ejector recess and the extractor spring recess. After that, plain carbon build-up on the bolt can be a gun-stopper too. And you need to keep the barrel extension clean too.
If you’re new to the (dirty) world of ARs, here are two helpful videos from the folks who make Froglube. That line of cleaners/lubes is pretty good stuff, though not our first choice for all AR lubrication and cleaning chores. But these videos do provide many helpful tips. They show the disassembly process and highlight the problem areas to which you must pay special attention.

The 17 Mach 2 (aka “17 HM2″) is making a come-back. We’re glad. This high-velocity round fits actions and magazines designed for the .22 LR, so it’s an easy barrel-swap upgrade for most rimfire bolt-guns (semi-autos are more complicated). The 17 Mach 2 cartridge doesn’t deliver the velocity of the 17 HMR, but it is still way faster than a .22 LR. Expect 2000-2100 fps with 17 Mach 2 compared to 1250 fps for “High-Velocity” .22 LR ammo. And, importantly, 17 Mach 2 ammo is much less expensive than 17 HMR. If you shop around, you can get 50 rounds of 17 Mach 2 for about $8.60. That’s 43% cheaper than the typical $14.99 price of 17 HMR — a significant savings (17 cents/round vs. 30 cents/round)!

17 Mach 2 — Best High Velocity Rimfire Bang for the Buck?
If you are looking for a capable, squirrel-busting round or a fun plinking round, you should definitely consider the 17 Mach 2, especially since CCI has committed to production of the little cartridge. CCI recently rolled out its “Gen 2″ 17 Mach 2 VNT Ammo with polymer tip (see top of article).
Considering that 17 HMR ammo is typically $15 to $17 per box, the 17 Mach 2 is a good value by comparison. It is available from vendors for about $8.60 per 50ct box. That’s $0.17 per round. When you consider overall “bang for the buck”, for many shooters, it makes sense to use the 17 Mach 2 rather than a 17 HMR. You save money, barrel life is a little longer, and the 17 Mach 2 is still a much more potent cartridge than the .22 LR. Check out this comparison, and note how the 17 Mach 2 has a much flatter trajectory than the .22 LR. For varmint shooting, the 17 Mach 2 is clearly the better choice.
Hornady’s 17 Mach 2 has a 2100 FPS muzzle velocity vs. 1255 FPS for “High-Velocity” .22 LR.
17 Mach 2 Rifle Reviews
Gun-makers have taken notice of the availability of 17 Mach 2 ammo, introducing new models chambered for this versatile little rimfire round. For a high-volume, small-species varminting, the 17 Mach 2 is much more effective than the .22 LR, and much less expensive than the larger 17 HMR.
New Savage A17 in 17 Mach 2
There are a number of reviews on new-generation 17 Mach 2 rifles. Recently Varminter.com reviewed the Savage A17 in 17 HM2. Editor Eric Mayer wrote: “This new addition to the A17 line comes at a time when the 17 Mach 2 round is experiencing a resurgence, with ammo now available from CCI and Hornady, including the lead-free NTX round from Hornady. This means … you don’t have to break the bank to buy a current, functioning, semi-auto 17 Mach 2 and you don’t have to … convert your 10/22.”
Eric shot four different types of 17 Mach 2 ammo, putting 1000+ rounds through the Savage. He was impressed: “I am very excited that Savage Arms has chambered their A17 rifle in the 17 Mach 2 / 17 HM2 round. The 17 Mach 2 (17 HM2) is making a comeback. Now leading manufacturers are offering this efficient little rimfire cartridge in some nice rifles. Both Anschutz and Volquartsen will offer new 17 Mach 2 rifles in 2019. The Volquartsen Summit features a lightweight, carbon fiber-wrapped barrel threaded 1/2-28 for brakes or suppressors. The Summit boasts a nice 1.75-lb trigger pull. The Summit’s CNC-machined receiver features a +20 MOA Rail. NOTE: The video shows a silhouette-style laminated wood stock. However, the Summit comes standard with a composite Magpul stock that actually works better for shooting from a bench.

90 Different Rifle Cartridge Types in Computer Animation
In this rifle ammunition comparison animation there are 90 different cartridge types, from very small (.22 Flobert) to very, very big (20mm Vulcan). This video employs sophisticated, 3D CAD animation to showcase 90 different rifle cartridges, one after the other, in sequence. It covers from .17 Caliber up to 20mm. Obviously a lot of time and effort went into this video, but it really is cool to see so many different cartridge types in one 3.5-minute video.
After the full line-up is complete at 1:41, the video then provides other smaller comparison, such as multiple large hunting cartridges (2:15) and .22 Caliber cartridges (2:45, see above). All the cartridge models are made using Autodesk Inventor software, and then the “line-up” animation was completed with Autodesk Showcase.

American shooter Jessie Harrison was part of a victorious USA Team and took second in the Ladies Open Division at the IPSC Handgun World Shoot held in November, 2022 in Pattaya, Thailand. The IPSC World Shoot is considered by many to be the most prestigious action pistol competition in the world. “The IPSC Handgun World Championships are our equivalent to the Olympics, the pinnacle of matches,” said Harrison.
Blast From the Past — Young Jessie in Cowboy Action Mode
Early in her shooting career, Jessie enjoyed Cowboy Action Shooting. She honed her skills shooting revolvers and lever guns “on the clock” with steel targets. For this Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) sport, all competitors use an official “alias” at matches. Jessie’s SASS alias was “Jasmine Jessie”. Jessie also enjoys hunting. Back in 2019, the chance to bag a Muley buck drew action-shooting ace Jessie Harrison out to Wyoming’s Bighorn Mountains region. Jessie, who is probably the best lady action pistol shooter on the planet, had a successful hunt with Big Horn Outfitters. Jessie, Shooting Team Captain for Taurus USA, really enjoyed getting out into the Wyoming wilderness. And she got her buck!

Forum Member Tests STM System
Our reviewer, Forum member Jason Koplin, purchased the STM media and a new Thumler’s Tumbler. He then tested the STM cleaning procedure on his own brass, including some extremely dirty and tarnished “range pick-up” brass. Works Great on Both Rifle Brass and Pistol Brass
The process works equally well on both rifle brass and pistol brass (see below). Jason observed that one surprise benefit of the STM cleaning procedure is a big reduction in noise in his reloading room. Jason said the water-filled rotary tumbler was much quieter than his vibratory tumblers.

Rimfire precision shooting is hot. NRL22 and PRS Rimfire are some of the fastest-growing shooting disciplines in the USA. The NRL now runs 7-8 times as many rimfire matches as centerfire matches these days.
