Tactical Titles — Four Good Books for PRS and NRL Competitors

PRS NRL precision rifle training book print resource manual gun handling instruction

Are you looking to get started in PRS and NRL practical precision rifle competition? Or perhaps you’d like to advance your skill set so you can place higher in big matches (and get your hands on those prize table items)? Of course there is no substitute for trigger time in the field, but there ARE some great print resources. These four books can help you select the right equipment, improve your shooting skills, make better wind calls, increase your fitness, and develop a more efficient between-match training program.

Tactical Practical PRS Precision Rifle Series NRL NRL22 good books

1. Precision Rifle Marksmanship: The Fundamentals

Frank Galli, $21.13 Paperback, $20.07 Kindle

Frank Galli rifle marksmanship PRS NRL precision rifle training book print resource manual gun handling instruction

Frank Galli (aka “LowLight”) is the founder/head honcho of SnipersHide.com, the most active tactical community on the internet. Galli is also a retired USMC scout-sniper. Practical Precision Rifle shooting is one of the hottest trends in competitive shooting today. PRS and NRL matches draw big turn-outs and boast impressive prize tables. Galli’s Precision Rifle Marksmanship (#ad) book covers the fundamentals of precision marksmanship with easy-to-understand methodology. The book uses the same instruction process that Galli uses in his live marksmanship classes.

As Sniper’s Hide guru Frank Galli explains, there is no voodoo when it comes to precision rifle marksmanship, but there are techniques that, when practiced, make the difference between good marksmanship and great marksmanship. Understanding the reasons that a bullet hits or doesn’t hit its intended target at ultra-long distances is a crucial element to learning. Galli’s explanations of how to understand and compensate for wind speed and direction are excellent — great wind-reading advice.

Published in 2020, this 272-page well-illustrated book covers the latest equipment (scopes, LRFs, chassis systems, mags, bags, bipods, tripods) favored by tactical competitors in PRS/NRL type matches.

2. Long Range Shooting Handbook

Ryan Cleckner, $24.95 Paperback, $9.99 Kindle

ryan cleckner long range handbook bookRyan Cleckner’s Long Range Shooting Handbook (#ad) is the best-selling modern book on practical rifle skills. A former U.S. Army sniper instructor, Cleckner is knowledgeable, and his text is well-organized and chock full of good information. You can view Sample Chapters on Amazon.com.

Ryan Cleckner’s highly-regarded Long Range Shooting Handbook is designed as an intro to important fundamental concepts such as MOA vs. Mils, External Ballistics, and Environmental Effects. Included are personal tips and advice based on Cleckner’s years of experience as a sniper instructor.

The Long Range Shooting Handbook is divided into three main categories: What It Is/How It Works, Fundamentals, and How to Use It. “What It Is/How It Works” covers equipment, terminology, and basic principles. “Fundamentals” covers the theory of long range shooting. “How to Use It” gives practical advice on implementing what you’ve learned, so you can progress as a skilled, long range shooter. This book will benefit any long-range shooter, not just PRS/NRL competitors.

3. IMPACT! — Training and Preparing for Precision Rifle Matches

Rodney Maze, $14.99 Paperback, $4.99 Kindle

PRS NRL precision rifle training book print resource manual gun handling instruction

Impact!, by PRS competitor Rodney Maze, is an entry/intermediate level guide to preparing yourself and your equipment to compete in precision rifle type matches. Impact! is illustrated with plenty of photographs. Topics are divided logically, and concepts are explained in clear language. Also included is an extensive glossary of terms used in precision shooting and a list of additional resources you can use to further pursue your precision shooting knowledge. This book also includes a handy Appendix with formatted pages for recording data about your rifle, scope, and ammunition. There is also a Wind table for recording your rifle “dope” and wind hold-offs. Lastly, Impact! has a useful table of unit conversions.

4. Practical Shooter’s Guide

Marcus Blanchard, $19.98 Paperback, $9.99 Kindle

Marcus Blanchard Practical Shooter's Guide

Thinking of getting started in the Practical/Tactical shooting game? Looking for ways to be more stable when shooting from unconventional positions? Then you may want to read Marcus Blanchard’s Practical Shooter’s Guide (A How-To Approach for Unconventional Firing Positions and Training) (#ad). Unlike almost every “how to shoot” book on the market, Blanchard’s work focuses on the shooting skills and positions you need to succeed in PRS matches and similar tactical competitions. Blanchard provides clear advice on shooting from barricades, from roof-tops, from steep angles. Blanchard says you need to train for these types of challenges: “I believe the largest factor in the improvement of the average shooter isn’t necessarily the gear; it’s the way the shooter approaches obstacles and how they properly train for them.”

Optimize Case Neck Tension with Bushings, Expanders, Annealing

Case Loading Neck Tension Sierra Bullets Paul Box

by Sierra Bullets Ballistic Technician Paul Box
One thing that plays a major role in building an accuracy load is neck tension [one of the factors that controls the “grip” on a bullet]. I think a lot of reloaders pretty much take this for granted and don’t give that enough thought.

So, how much neck tension is enough?

Through the years and shooting both a wide variety of calibers and burn rates of powder, I’ve had the best accuracy overall with .002″ of neck tension. Naturally you will run into a rifle now and then that will do its best with something different like .001″ or even .003″, but .002″ has worked very well for me. So how do we control the neck tension? Let’s take a look at that.

First of all, if you’re running a standard sizing die with an expander ball, just pull your decapping rod assembly out of your die and measure the expander ball. What I prefer [for starters] is to have an expander ball that is .003″ smaller than bullet diameter. So for example in a .224 caliber, run an expander ball of .221″. If you want to take the expander ball down in diameter, just chuck up your decapping rod assembly in a drill and turn it down with some emery cloth. When you have the diameter you need, polish it with three ought or four ought steel wool. This will give it a mirror finish and less drag coming through your case neck after sizing.

Tips for Dies With Interchangeable Neck Bushings
If you’re using a bushing die, I measure across the neck of eight or ten loaded rounds, then take an average on these and go .003″ under that measurement. There are other methods to determine bushing size, but this system has worked well for me.

Case Loading Neck Tension Sierra Bullets Paul Box

Proper Annealing Can Deliver More Uniform Neck Tension
Another thing I want to mention is annealing. When brass is the correct softness, it will take a “set” coming out of the sizing die far better than brass that has become too hard. When brass has been work hardened to a point, it will be more springy when it comes out of a sizing die and neck tension will vary. Have you ever noticed how some bullets seated harder than others? That is why.

Case Loading Neck Tension Sierra Bullets Paul Box

Paying closer attention to neck tension will give you both better accuracy and more consistent groups.

Brownells Supports Gun Owners of America with 5% of Sales

Gun Owners of America Goa brownells 5% sale

Second Amendment advocacy groups have been vital to the protection of our gun rights. Successful litigation has protected Americans’ rights to purchase and carry guns for sport, hunting, and self-defense. We’re very pleased to see that Brownells is supporting by gun rights efforts by donating 5% of Brownells’ website sales to Gun Owners of America (GOA) this week. From Monday, July 21, through Sunday, July 27, 2025, every purchase made at Brownells.com will help support GOA’s mission. And there’s a bonus for Brownells customers — you can save 10% on orders over $350.00 with Brownells Code SAVE4GOA. So if you buy $400 worth of products you’ll save $40.00.

Gun Owners of America (GOA) Defends Second Amendment Rights
The Gun Owners of America (GOA) is an organization dedicated to protecting and defending the constitutional right to keep and bear arms. GOA’s lawyers have pursued legal efforts throughout the nation, in local, state, and Federal Courts, challenging unconstitutional gun control laws, executive actions, and federal overreach.

gun owners america brownells

Gun Owners of America is actively engaged in some of the most critical Second Amendment legal battles today, including a forthcoming federal lawsuit to dismantle the remaining provisions of the National Firearms Act. GOA, along with the Gun Owners Foundation (GOF), has also filed a lawsuit against the United States Postal Service (USPS), seeking to overturn the Prohibition-era federal ban on the mailing of handguns. Additionally, Gun Owners of America has defended the right to build and own homemade firearms while fighting back against ATF overreach on pistol braces and other regulatory abuses. Brownells is proud to stand with GOA in defending the rights of law-abiding gun owners.

New Legal Actions by GOA to Eliminate National Firearms Act Restrictions
The GOA has recently commenced new legal actions in Federal Court to curtail remaining restrictions in the NFA. This could help make suppressors easier to obtain at much lower prices. That would benefit both hunters and target shooters.

About Gun Owners of America
Founded in 1975, Gun Owners of America (GOA) is known as “The only no-compromise gun lobby in Washington.” GOA works to protect the Second Amendment rights of Americans through grassroots activism, legal action, and by holding lawmakers accountable. GOA fights against federal and state-level infringements, challenges unconstitutional regulations in the courts, and leads efforts to advance pro-2A policies across the nation. Choosing a Gun Safe — Capacity, Placement, Locks, Fire Rating

gun safe lock

There is a good article on gun safes in SHOT Business, a publication for the NSSF SHOT Show audience. Written by Christopher Cogley, this Safe Spaces Article offers some very important things to consider when purchasing a gun safe. Here are key points from that article:

Safe Security — The security of a gun safe comes down to two main factors: the thickness of the steel and the construction of the safe. When it comes to construction, look for a safe that has continuous welded construction instead of bolts or spot-welding, which are easier for trained gun thieves to cut through with torches or high-power saws.

Lock Options — Traditional combination locks are arguably the simplest choice. The downside, though, is they don’t provide quick access to firearms in an emergency. Electronic and biometric keypads provide quicker access — but be sure to replace the batteries every year.

gun safe lock

Fireproof Rating — Aside from theft, the biggest threat to your firearms is fire. Unfortunately, the fireproof rating on gun safes can be confusing because there is no single, “standard” fireproof rating. As a general rule, the fireproof rating states how long a safe can be exposed to a fire of a particular temperature and maintain a temperature inside the safe of no more than 350 degrees F. To put this in context, the average house fire creates temperatures between 800 and 1,200 degrees F.

Where to Place a Gun Safe in Your Home
The Safe Spaces article includes advice from Stephen Hall, CEO of Lock It Up Safes. Hall addressed the question: “Where should I put my safe?”

Hall states: “Ease of installation should NOT be the foremost consideration when making this decision. Putting a safe in the garage has both pros and cons. We see some retailers recommend the garage solely because they don’t have the right team on board to install safes in other locations, and wheeling one into the garage is the easy way out.

Putting a safe in the garage is fine if that is the only place you an put it, but most want the safe in the home, where they can get to it quickly. Temperature and humidity are important considerations as well, and both are more easily controlled in a house rather than in the garage.

One advantage to garage installation is the concrete floor provides a solid base for safe installation. Houses built on concrete slabs also offer a solid anchor on the first level. If the safe needs to go to an upper floor, the weight of the safe and its contents need to be factored in.”

Place Safe Against Outside Wall
Hall recommends placing your gun safe against an outside wall: “In case of fire, the safe will typically last longer as there is not a lot that can burn on one side of the safe, thus keeping it cooler.”

Don’t Make the Mistake of Buying an Undersized Safe

The most common mistake people make when buying a gun safe is getting a safe that’s too small. This video explains why you should probably invest in a bigger safe. First, the rated gun capacity is exaggerated — rifles with mounted optics, long barrels, wide forearms and/or pistol grips take up considerably more space than a small rimfire rifle or a lever gun with iron sights. Second, your gun collection will likely grow in years to come. Third, you may want to store other valuables in the safe — such as vital documents, jewelry, watches, and pricey electronics. In this video the host notes: “Get a much larger safe than you think you’ll need at first. This will guarantee that you will have enough room for future purchases and all the guns and equipment you currently have.”

Recommended Safe Features for Long-Gun Storage
Editor’s Recommendation:

Budget $1200-1500 for a safe from a major maker, with external hinges, and an interior at least 58″ high. That gives you room for 30″-barreled rifles with a top shelf for handguns and other valuables. A rotary rack and slide-out drawers are great additions.

Keypad or Dial? We favor rotary dial locks. With minimal maintenance they will function flawlessly for decades. But the digital locks offer quick-access and convenience. If you go digital, get a commercial-grade unit.

Fire-lining is worth getting, but a thin layer of sheet-rock doesn’t make a safe truly “fire-proof”.

Interior at least 58″ High and 30″ wide
Overall Weight 750+ Pounds
8 Gauge or Heavier Wall Thickness
Double-Wall, Composite Door with Relockers
Minimum UL RSC Rated. TL-15 or TL-30 Rating is Desirable
External Hinges

Mechanical UL Group II (or better) Lock with Standard Dial
Or UL Type 1 Commercial-Grade Electronic Lock

Custom Interior Suitable for Scoped Guns with Long Barrels
On-Door Storage System for Non-scoped Long Guns OR
Rotary Gun Rack for Scoped Rifles and ARs

Internal (sandwiched) Insulator, Reinforced if Sheet-rock
Palusol? Heat-Activated Expanding Door Seals

Slide-out Drawers for Handguns
Fire-lined Inner Safe for Paper and Media

Low Gloss, Rust-resistant External Finish
Pre-Drilled holes for Lag Bolts and in Rear for Electric Cord
Overhead Fluorescent Lamp and/or LED Mini-lights on Strings

walther p22 pistol target free federal .22 LR rimfire ammunition punch ammo

We think all shooters should have a quality .22 LR rimfire pistol — something with a good trigger, ergonomic grip, and excellent accuracy out of the box. Right now, with the Walther P22 Target Model, you can get all those things for just $239.99 at CDNN Sports. We that that’s one of the best mag-fed rimfire handgun deals you’ll currently find anywhere.

This pistol has a good trigger and ergonomic grip. Accuracy is very good and the forward ported compensator reduces muzzle flip dramatically, allowing very rapid follow-up shots — good for gun games. The K22 ships with two (2) 10-round magazines. This pistol does not have an integral plate for fitting a red dot optic, but the adjustable iron sights are quite good.

The P22 is a very nice rimfire handgun with a 5″ barrel plus a forward ported compensator. The ergonomic grip boasts an interchangeable backstrap. Walther states: “Best-in-class ergonomics, supported by interchangeable backstraps, establishes the P22 as one of the most comfortable handguns available today.” Compared to most other rimfire pistols in this class, the trigger is very good right out of the box with a light, crisp pull. We also like the ambidextrous controls. A rare feature for a rimfire, the P22 is covered by the Walther Legendary Lifetime Limited Warranty.

Emcee Christie Sewell, CMP Chief Programs Officer, introduced notables including CMP Director of Civilian Marksmanship Emeritus, Gary Anderson. After brief remarks from CMP’s Board Chair/CEO, Jerry O’Keefe, Sewell introduced the 2025 honorary First Shot Speaker, Staff Sgt. (SSG) Sagen Maddalena of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit.

SSG Maddalena — currently the number-one-ranked 50-meter smallbore athlete in the world — had some of her earliest successes at Camp Perry as a junior before earning a Silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in the women’s 50-meter 3P rifle event. She began as a junior in a California 4-H .22 rifle program and moved on to the California Grizzlies service rifle team. As a teen with the Grizzlies she earned a Distinguished Rifleman badge in 2011.

Then she became a member of the Alaska Fairbanks rifle team. She went on to become an eight-time All-American. In 2019, she enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit.

In 2023, she earned a gold medal and set a new world record in the women’s team 50-meter rifle three-position event at the 2023 ISSF World Championships. She went on to add another two gold medals in the women’s 50-meter smallbore rifle and 10-meter air rifle events at the 2024 CAT Games in Argentina. That performance secured her place on the 2025 U.S. Olympic Team.

At the First Shot ceremony, Sagen thanked the community and all those who helped to make the National Matches a success: “Let us give it our best in competition and treat each day as a new opportunity to challenge ourselves and to excel.”

Burris Signature Zee Rings — Great Option for Scope Mounting

Burris Signature Zee rings

Burris Signature Zee ringsMore and more folks are using Burris Signature Rings these days. These unique rings feature polymer inserts. That allows you to pre-load some elevation in your scope set-up, or you can center-up the windage. Additionally, the polymer inserts hold your scope securely without leaving marks on the tube. Lastly, some folks believe that Signature rings may offer advantages for benchrest competition. Rodney Wagner shot a world-record 600-yard group using Burris Signature Zee Rings (“Zee” denotes the Weaver-rail model). James O’Hara set multiple IBS 1000-yard records using Burris Signature Zee Rings. James will tell you he thinks “all his guns seem to shoot best with these rings”.

IBS World Record Set with Signature Zee Rings
Are Signature Zees good enough for competition? Absolutely. Some folks scoff at these Burris rings, given their modest price. A set of 1″-diameter Sig Zees cost $40.89 at Midsouth. But consider this, in 2013 Rodney Wagner shot the then-smallest 600-yard group in history, a 0.336″ 5-shot stunner, using Signature Zee Rings on his IBS Light Gun. It took five years for a smaller 600-yard group to be shot, a 0.311″ by bullet-maker Bart Sauter, using his IBS Heavy Gun. (See IBS 600-yard Records.) Here’s Rodney with his record-setting rifle, fitted with affordable Signature Zee 30mm rings.

Vendors Have Burris Signature Rings in Stock Now
Various models of Burris Signature Rings are available from many online vendors. NOTE: You may have to check with more than one seller to get the exact size, height, and model you prefer. But right now these vendors have pretty good selections of Signature Zees in stock now, including the popular 30mm High and 30mm Extra High models (each currently $56.36 at Midsouth). If you check all three sellers, you’ll probably find what you need.
