Sunday GunDay: Match-Winning Palma Rifle of Ray Gross

Raymond ray gross Kerr trophy winner Camp Perry .308 Win 7.62x51 palma barnard action bartlein barrel sunday gunday

This Sunday GunDay story celebrates an impressive victory by Raymond (“Ray”) Gross, one of America’s most skilled marksmen and a top team coach. Ray has mastered many disciplines including Service rifle, Palma rifle, and F-Class (both F-TR and F-Open). Recently Ray notched another notable victory at the CMP’s 2026 National Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio, winning the Kerr Memorial Match (Palma Rifle division).

Report by Ray Gross
I had a successful trip to Camp Perry this year, winning the Palma Rifle division of the 1000-yard Kerr Memorial Match and winning two Golds and a Silver coaching in the three team events. This is actually my first time back at Camp Perry for Long Range since 2015. I really enjoyed my time there this year.

For the Kerr match, I used my standard Palma rifle. My Barnard action and Master Class / Robertson stock have been with me for 21 years now and have seen numerous barrels and a few upgrades to the stock. The stock has a bedding block and originally I had two Barnard actions that I would swap in and out. I currently use the standard Barnard P Trigger, set to 1.5 kg.

Raymond ray gross Kerr trophy winner Camp Perry .308 Win 7.62x51 palma barnard action bartlein barrel sunday gunday

This rifle has a Warner rear sight with true 1/4 MOA clicks. It is fitted with a Gehmann 530-0 rear diopter. The front sight is a Doug Beach 22mm ladder sight with a Centra 5.0-7.0mm adjustable aperture. For my eyesight (-2.75 x -0.75 in my aiming eye), I will generally run 5.1 to 5.6 on the 1000-yard target. At that size, I am more or less cutting the corners off the 6×6 target. Most of the ranges I shoot at have a large, dark-colored safety berm behind the target.

Raymond ray gross Kerr trophy winner Camp Perry .308 Win 7.62x51 palma barnard action bartlein barrel sunday gunday

Camp Perry has a rather unique sight picture at 1000 yards, with the target surrounded on three sides with open sky, but with the dark pit safety berm below. It took a little bit to get used to that. The dark pit berm was prominent inside my aperture, even when turned down to 5.0. Next year, I plan to swap out the from aperture to allow me to get down to about a 4.7-4.8mm size.

Raymond ray gross Kerr trophy winner Camp Perry .308 Win 7.62x51 palma barnard action bartlein barrel sunday gunday target scoreThe barrel is a Bartlein 5R 300×308 Light Palma taper. Chad Heckler of 5×5 Precision chambered this barrel for me. I recently troll-posted some bore pics on Facebook of this barrel at about 750 rounds. I work at Manson Reamers primarily as a chamber designer and tech support role and get to hear many stories about chambers and barrels. I think a lot of people really misjudge what they are seeing with borescopes causing a lot of worry and anxiety. The real measure of a target rifle is how it performs in competition.

Leaving Camp Perry it has about 1500 rounds down the tube and is shooting plenty good enough to win at the National Championships. By the way, I showed up with about 30 rounds fired since the previous thorough cleaning and did not clean once while there. I am not necessarily recommending that, but this barrel shoots fine dirty.

I am on my 16th firing of the Lapua large primer .308 Win brass. I have a bunch of new small primer brass that I want to use, but the lot I have been using just won’t wear out, so I keep reloading it. My Perry ammo was loaded with Vihtavuori N150 powder, but I started the year with N140 to use up that particular jug of powder. My bullet of choice for long range with the Palma rifle is the Berger 155.5 gr FullBore Target Rifle bullet seated about .035″ off the lands. Editor: The video below provides a comparison of Lapua large primer .308 Win brass vs. Lapua small primer .308 Win brass.

Most of my recent Palma barrels have the Manson 308 Win 2019 Fullbore T30 chamber (that I designed). That is a very widely-used chamber designed to pass Bisley Rule 150 inspection. It is a ‘Bisley Reamer’. Bisley reamers tend to have fairly long throats. I have a collection of various ‘Bisley Reamer’ prints from all over the world. The Manson 2019 Fullbore T30 is not the longest, but it is among the longer throated designs. SEE Diagram below (click to zoom):

manson 2019 .308 win palma t30 chamber reamer ray gross
CLICK reamer diagram to load full-size, downloadable .PDF file.

Since 2019 I have had a number of competitors request a shorter-throated chamber in hopes of achieving higher velocities with the NRAUK Bisley issued ammo, currently made by GGG*. The issue ammo is essentially old school Palma ammo with a Sierra 2155 seated to 2.80″ COL. The Sierra 2155 is a very accurate bullet, but it does not have the BC of more modern 155gr designs. I love shooting them at 300 and 600 yards. If you want to learn to read the wind, practice with them at long range.

Raymond ray gross Kerr trophy winner Camp Perry .308 Win 7.62x51 palma barnard action bartlein barrel sunday gunday

The chamber in this rifle is a ‘prototype’ shorter-throated reamer designed with the help of Brandon Green and measurements of the GGG 2025 issued ammo*. The reamer is the GGG25 reamer. On the print I have a big disclaimer that the chamber probably will eventually fail the rule 150 test as bullets change over the years, but it did pass with the 2026 issued ammo. My recommendation is to stick with the 2019 Fullbore design if you plan to go to Bisley.

Video shows first 2.5-3″ of another one of Ray’s Palma barrels, with an estimated 2800 rounds.
Ray reports that approximately 70 rounds had been shot in this barrel since it was last cleaned.
Ray says his Palma rifles shoot well even with high round count between cleanings.

Sunday GunDay: Eliseo Tubegun in .308 Win — Great Palma Rig

Dennis Santiago Eliseo Competition Machine Tubegun Chassis .308 Win Rifle Berger Southwest Nationals

Our friend Dennis Santiago is a talented Service Rifle shooter, who regularly competes with an AR shooting the .223 Rem cartridge. A few seasons back, he decided to go over to the “dark side”, putting together a Palma (fullbore) rifle chambered for the .308 Winchester. Dennis selected a Competition Machine (Gary Eliseo) R1 Chassis for the project. Here’s Santiago’s account of his “true blue” Palma build.

Palma Rifle Report by Dennis Santiago
“This project was a .308 Win Palma rifle with an Eliseo R1 chassis, Rem 700 action (blue-printed with PT&G upgrades), Jewell trigger, Boots Obermeyer 1:11″-twist barrel, and Phoenix sights holding Gehmann apertures. Next comes chassis and sling set-up, initial mechanical zeroing, and load development. Yup, I have a bunch of Peterson small primer .308 brass, Sierra #2156 155gr MKs, and Varget to get started with. I’m told I can drive 155gr pills to stay supersonic to 1K. Should make for an interesting 2020. My goal was to be cozy with this blue beast by the time the Berger Southwest Nationals kicked off in February 2020.”

Pinning the Picatinny — For a Super-Solid Mount
Dennis Santiago Eliseo Competition Machine Tubegun Chassis .308 Win Rifle Berger Southwest Nationals

One of the key parts of the build, Dennis explains, is mounting the top rail with pins: “Once the rail is aligned using a spin-centered optic, it locks down with three 3/16″ roll pins. That way there is no reliance on screws that can come loose. Above is a photo of the top of the Eliseo tube chassis showing the three, 3/16″ roll pins that unitize the Picatinny rail. You can also see the four brass screws that just kiss the action to fully stabilize it in the tube. The recoil ring buttresses completely around the action with metal to metal contact. There are a million details hidden inside a Gary gun.”

Phoenix Sights Front and Rear

Rise of the Phoenix — Here are the sights for the Eliseo R1. There are very few manufacturers left making these kinds of ultra-precise and repeatable iron sights.

Dennis Santiago Eliseo Competition Machine Tubegun Chassis .308 Win Rifle Berger Southwest Nationals

These Ray-Vin tools help set mechanical zero on the sights. Dennis notes: “Finally a reason to pull out the Ray-Vin calibration paraphernalia to set up a mechanical zero. This photo is for all of you who still remember that those barrel flats and screws in our sight towers actually had a purpose once upon a time.”

Dennis plans to use an Eric Hollis sling with his new blue Palma rifle.

Peterson Small Primer .308 Win Brass for Santiago’s Rig
Berger southwest SW Nationals

Dennis has used Peterson Cartridge Small Rifle primer .308 Win brass. Peterson offers a “Select” version weight-sorted and length-sorted at the factory. All Select casings (in a 50ct box) are guaranteed to be within 1 grain in weight and .001″ in OAL. Peterson Select brass is available for 20 different cartridge types, including .308 Win both small primer/small flash hole and large primer/large flash hole.

Now Adapted with a Scope
Currently (in 2025) Dennis has this rifle fitted with a high-magnification Nightforce zoom scope, and he competes with his blue prone rifle in the “Any-Any” division. He usually runs the scope at about 22X power. For an older guy with aging eyes, being able to run high-magnification optics is a big plus.

With the optics Dennis has found the rifle to be exceptionally accurate. Shooting 168gr bullets it has produced 5-round groups around 1/3-MOA during testing. And it can easily hold the X-Ring at 300 yards.

Getting the Blue Rifle Ready for the Berger SW Nationals

Berger southwest SW Nationals

Dennis has campaigned his rifle at recent Berger Southwest Nationals (SWN) events. At the SWN a Palma shooter can shoot iron sights, or also fit a scope and shoot in the “Any Sights” category. The week-long Berger SWN is the biggest rifle match in the Western United States. Hundreds of shooters compete in both individual and team events. The SWN begins with the Mid-Range Nationals at 600 yards. Then the Long-Range matches are held, with targets out to 1000 yards. Watch the video to see the Ben Avery facility, home of the Berger SWN:

Sunday Gunday: Master of Wood — Doan Trevor Custom Rifles

Doan Trevor custom wookd stock gunsmithingDetail from Doan Trevor rimfire prone stock (Fiddleback Walnut) with Stiller 2500 X Action.

New Mexico Gunsmith Doan Trever is a true wizard with wood. At Doan Trevor Custom Rifle Building, he crafts stunning figured wood stocks, and also builds complete wood-stocked and fiberglass-stocked rifles that shoot as good as they look. Doan is a true master, with a mind for function and an eye for beauty. The ability to hand-craft wood is becoming a lost art. For this Sunday, we celebrate four projects crafted by Doan: two complete rifle, a special F-Class stock built for multiple actions, and an F-TR stock for a Sako action. Visit DoanTrevor.com to view find dozens of other stunning stocks and complete rifles.

Mausingfield America Rifle with English Walnut Stock

Doan told us: “This is a highly figured piece of English Walnut with burls and flowers. Along the bottom of the stock there’s a burl/flower that looks like an owl and one side looks like the Sandia Mountains. This rifle is in 30 PCR. Doan adds: “The owner is enjoying this rifle immensely.”

Walther KK500 (Twin Trigger), English Walnut Laminate Stock with Fiddleback Accents

About this unique rig Doan notes: “This left-handed rifle has two triggers. It has an electronic trigger AND a mechanical trigger. With the wood stock option, the charging cable needs to be modified modify in order to clear the trigger extension to be able to charge. Also, keeping with aesthetics, I made it able to remove the trigger guard in order to charge more easily. Removing the trigger guard does not change the bedding.”

Doan explains: “The owner has three actions with the same barrel block mounting system. He wanted to be able to use one stock. I built a bedding system that would accomplish this task. The two pieces of Claro Walnut on the fore-end are mirror copies.”

F-TR Stock for Sako 85 with Johnny Byer Stock Blank

Here’s a handsome F-TR rig. Doan reports: “The pistol grip cap is a piece of Screw Bean Mesquite Wood from my old front yard in Albuquerque. (I live in Rio Rancho, NM now.) Take a look at the bottom photo with the blue background, the rifle doesn’t have any stippling yet. Sometimes, you have stippling as the last step. There’s no room for error when this order of events is necessary.”

Stock Reborn: Second-Hand Anschutz Becomes F-Open Beauty

Anschutz 1411 stock gunsmithing project wood work palma rifle f-class F-Open stocking

Here is an interesting project by one of our Forum members. Martin C. (aka “Killick”) modified an Anschutz 1411 Match 54 rimfire prone stock to become a comfortable, great-tracking F-Class Open Division Stock. No Killick didn’t sacrifice a perfectly good rimfire rifle for this project — he bought the Anschutz stock by itself on eBay, then transformed it…

Killick explains: “This project started about seven years ago. I bought the Anschutz prone stock on eBay and whittled it a bit into a Palma rifle with a Barnard action and block and a Doan Trevor cheek piece and scope rail. Then about two years ago I decided to re-task the stock/action assembly into an F-Open rig. With more whittling, gluing, sanding, body fillering, sanding, filling, sanding, more sanding…and sanding, forming, priming, sanding, painting, waiting, painting, painting…painting and before you know it, Bob’s your uncle.”

Here is the eBay-sourced Anschutz 1411 stock, with new high-gloss blue finish, as initially modified for use in Killick’s centerfire Palma rifle. Looks nice!

Competitor’s Thoughts about the 2022 SW Nationals
Our friend John Masek (“F Class John” in our Forum) shot great to finish 4th overall in the F-Open division. Here is his “take-away” from this year’s SWN:

The 2022 SWN saw what I can only describe as the largest collection of tight-shooting guns I’ve even seen. As we approached the 800-yard line for the first day of the Long Range program, it was absolutely dead calm and everyone knew some high scores were going to get posted. By the end of the 800-yard match, the vast majority of the 134 F-Open shooters shot a clean 150 with a staggering eight of them shooting a perfect 150-15X (even 11-year-old Ethan Blake). By the end of the day, after shooting 15 rounds each at 800, 900, and 1000 yards, the entire first page of F-Open shooters was separated by only 7 points — a crazy tight margin.

On the following day we started with a very difficult 10-15 mph headwind that derailed many shooters. After the dust settled, there were 22 points separating the first page of shooters but still just 9 points spread among the top 20. The final day was fairly mild and it was anyone’s game, but there was just enough wind to keep shooters on their toes, giving many a chance at redemption from the previous day.

At the end of the day, Tod Hendricks, Tim Vaught, and Ken Dickerman kept their heads in the game and held onto their leads to finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively in F-Open. Tod shot an amazing 200-15X in his final round, proving that he was indeed deserving of the F-Open gold medal after three days of fierce competition.

As always, this match, along with the F-Class Nationals and V2 Finale, bring out the finest shooters in the country (and others from around the world). I highly encourage anyone who is able to attend these matches to do so. It’s an experience like no other. No matter your score, you’ll leave with more experience and certainly more friends than you arrived with.

Over 300 Competitors from Many Countries
On opening day of the 2022 SW Nationals Nancy Tompkins posted: “We started the day off with National anthems for Brazil, Canada, Puerto Rico, Scotland, the United Kingdom, and the USA. We have 282 shooters today and 333 for the Long Range portion of the match. It is fantastic seeing so many targets up and so many competitors after the last two years.”

Parting Shot: Norm Harrold Target, 200-17X

Paul Phillips posted: “Today I pulled a target for Norm Harrold. This was his 1000-yard target that scored 200-17X. This was the best F-Class score I ever pulled for. It sure is nice when they’re all in the X-Ring. Nice shooting Norm! This is a 5-inch X-Ring.” NOTE: This was from the first 20-shot competition on Day 2 at 1000 yards. We believe Norm had the second highest score for this particular 20-shot match, behind Steven Zock who shot an amazing 200-19X.

See you next year!

Berger Southwest Nationals — Equipment List from 2020

2020 Berger Southwest SW SWN Nationals gear list equipment actions barrels stocks bullets scopes

The Berger SW Nationals competition is back! After being cancelled in 2021 due to Covid concerns, one of America’s best shooting matches returns in 2022. The match kicks off tomorrow, February 9, 2022, and continues through Sunday February 13, 2022 at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix, Arizona.

This is a unique match that combines F-Class competition with High Power (Palma) prone sling shooting. The nation’s top F-Open and F-TR shooters will be in Phoenix, along with top “hard-holders” with their bolt-action long-range target rifles.

If you’re curious about the equipment favored by Berger SWN competitors, here are the equipment lists from the last SWN match in 2020. This list was compiled by the match directors from info supplied by 2020 F-Class and High Power competitors. This covers hardware (actions, barrels, stocks), optics (riflescopes, spotting scopes), and cartridges (brass, bullets, powders). As you’d expect, .284 Win (and variants) dominated the F-Open ranks. Though some guys did try the .223 Rem for F-TR, the .308 Win was still used by the vast majority of F-TR shooters.

Matt Schwartzkopf, USA F-TR Team member (and Ben Avery Range Supervisor), collected comprehensive gear reports during the 2020 Berger SW Nationals. Matt then created charts showing competitors’ choices for Actions, Barrels, Stocks, Riflescopes and Spotting Scopes. In addition, Matt compiled bullet choice and powder preferences for all classes along with cartridge rankings for F-Open Division.

The best F-Class and Sling shooters in the nation compete each year at the Berger Southwest Nationals at the Ben Avery range in Arizona. Walk down the firing line and you’ll see the absolute “best of the best” in equipment — from $3500 optics to $2000 stocks and $400 triggers. Berger SWN shooters have some of the best equipment you can buy. In this game, where just 1 or 2 points can separate first from third place (considering X-Count), it’s important to have top-flight equipment. That means a custom action, custom barrel, and high-end stock or chassis system.

Cartridge Selection in F-Open Division

In addition, Matt produced an interesting listing of cartridge/caliber types for the F-Open division. This is helpful because cartridge choice is unrestricted in the F-Open class. By contrast, the F-TR division is limited to .223 Remington (5.56×45) or .308 Winchester (7.62×51). You can see that the .284 Winchester (and variants) currently dominate F-Open.

We have a new Long-Range National Champion. Competing at Camp Atterbury in Indiana, Oliver Milanovic took the 2021 NRA National Long Range Championship with a score of 1245-73X. Oliver was shooting an Eliseo Chassis + Borden Action Palma Rifle with 155gr bullets. Finishing second, tied on points but with four fewer Xs, was 2019 National Long Range Champion SSG Amanda Elsenbuss, with 1245-69X. In third place was Jeffrey Miles, just one point back, with 1244-73X.

As you can see, with the top three shooters all separated by just one point, it was a very close competition. But Milanovic, a popular marksman from Arizona, put on an impressive performance to take the win and the Thompkins Trophy. No stranger to the podium, Oliver has been on the winning Sling Division Team at the Berger SW Nationals in the past.

For all the relays, Milanovic shot his trusty .308 Winchester Competition Machine (Eliseo) chassis rifle with a Borden action, loading Palma-spec 155-gr bullets. In the Long Range Championship, other chamberings are allowed for some stages, but we’re told Oliver ran his 155gr Palma load throughout. Milanovic also won the Palma Individual Trophy Match with an impressive 450-30X score, not dropping a single point.

Sunday GunDay: Doan Trevor Custom Rifles and Wood Stocks

American Walnut F-Class Stock with Figured English/Claro Walnut Fore-End Inlay
