CPT Christopher Abalo of the USAMU won the NRA Smallbore Rifle Prone Championship at Camp Perry, claiming the prestigious Critchfield Trophy with a score of 4792-352X. Reya Kempley came in second, just two points back (4790-363X). Rounding out the top three was Michael Anti who shot 4787-350X
The “third time was a charm” for Abalo, who secured the title in his third appearance at the Camp Perry smallbore prone event. He was close to the top in the past two years. In 2010 Abalo finished second behind teammate SSG Shane Barnhardt, while in 2011 Abalo took third, behind teammate SSG Michael McPhail and Mark Delcotto. “It feels great,” Abalo said of his first win. “After coming in second and third the last two years, it feels great to be at the top of the podium this time.”

Comprised of a Metallic Sight Championship and Any Sight Championship, the Prone Championship saw improved weather from the previous week’s Position Championships. Conditions stayed dry for the most part, but the wind coming off Lake Erie was still a force to contend with and often made life difficult for the almost 300 shooters taking part in the matches.
Tarl Kempley is the 2012 NRA 3-Position Smallbore National Champion. Tarl combined a second-place finish in the Any Sights (scopes allowed) event with a fourth-place finish in the Metallic Sights event to end up winning the overall championship with a combined 2295-108X score. (The NRA 3P Smallbore National Championship is based on combined scores of the Metallic Sight Match and the Any Sight Match.)

Tarl has been a top smallbore competitor for many years. He won the 2011 NRA Metric 3-Position National Championship, and, in 2009, Tarl won the 3-Position Metallic Sight Championship at Camp Perry. This year he pulled it all together to win the 3-Position Overall Championship, chalking up high X-Count along the way. Interestingly, the next three finishers were women: Kirsten Weiss (2287-96X), Amanda Luoma (2281-92X), and Reya Kempley (2276-107X).
Weiss Shoots Iron Sights in Any Sight Match Yet Finishes Second Overall
Team Lapua’s Kirsten Weiss provided the come-from-behind story of the match. Shooting through extremely adverse conditions during the Any Sight Match on Day 2, Kirsten rose from eighth place to finish Second Overall and High Woman. This is particularly remarkable because Weiss shot the Any Sight Match with metallic (iron) sights! The majority of the other shooters opted for scopes. With the winds howling at over 20 mph, and the temperatures 25 degrees cooler than on Day One, Weiss shot consistently in the prone, kneeling, and standing portions. Weiss captured the standing segment and finished consistently near the top in prone and kneeling. Weiss uses a well-traveled Anschutz rifle with old-fashioned wood stock.

“I was very happy with my shooting, especially in the tough conditions on Day Two,” reported Kirsten. “Back in April I was at the Grand Opening of the Lapua Rimfire Service Center in Arizona and was able to comparison test some lots of Midas+ and X-ACT with my rifle.” Weiss says the lots of ammo she selected for her gun “performed great”, as her performance proved.

The NRA Smallbore Three-Position National Championships commenced today at Camp Perry in Port Clinton, Ohio. The first event, the prone stage of the Metallic Sight Matches, got off to a rainy start Thursday morning. The prone phase consists of two 20-shot stages fired in twenty minutes each, at 50 yards with metallic sights— a total of 40 shots. A light rain started while relay one was shooting, and after about ten minutes, a cease-fire was called due to lightning threats. After about fifteen minutes, the tower announced shooting could resume with a one-minute prep period. Competitors went back to the firing line, set up their equipment and resumed shooting. The weather forecast calls for rain and scattered thunderstorms the rest of today.
At the Smallbore practice session on Wednesday, well-known shooters filled the line: Tarl and Reya Kempley, last year’s 3-Position Champion Joseph Hein, and USAMU paralympic member Joshua Olson. Already respected for her High Power and Long-Range shooting, Nancy Tompkins added the 2012 NRA National Metric Prone Smallbore Rifle National Championship to her impressive shooting resume.
The weather was very hot and breezy for the 2012 Metric Prone National Championships conducted at the Wa-Ke’-De Rifle Range, Bristol, Indiana. Forty-two competitors were on hand for this third Annual Metric Prone Nationals. On Monday the 1200-point Iron Sights Aggregate was held, followed by the Any Sight Aggregate on Tuesday. Winds began mild and built throughout the day. The range is sheltered by high trees, but as the wind increases, it swirls, making this range a very difficult place to shoot (especially given the use of the more difficult Olympic metric targets). The 100-yard stage of each day was the determining factor!
Tompkins won the Iron Sight Aggregate with a score of 1172-55X to beat young Garrett Spurgeon by four points and Katie Bridges by 13. Kevin Nevius said: “Nancy was amazing — her 100-yard performance was some of the best shooting I have ever seen.”
Fellow Team Lapua member Kevin was shooting great himself. In the Any Sight competition, Kevin captured the National Title with an aggregate score of 1176-56X. Runner-up was Ron Wigger with 1169-54X, while Tompkins was High Woman at 1165-46X.
Tompkins’ consistency paid off as she captured the National Title with a total score of 2337-101X to narrowly defeat Spurgeon (2333-115X) and Nevius (2328-96X). “I was able to visit the new Lapua Service Center in Mesa, AZ about two weeks ago and found the perfect Lapua ammunition for my rifle,” reported Tompkins. Nancy was shooting Lapua Midas+ ammo, while Kevin Nevius competed using Lapua’s X-ACT ammunition. Smallbore competitors — mark your calendars for July 13 through July 17. That’s when the 2012 NRA National Metric Smallbore Championships will be held at the Wa-Ke’-De Range in Bristol, Indiana. Practice Relays will be held on the 13th and the afternoon of the 15th. With Position shooting scheduled for July 13-15 and Prone for July 15-17, this event is a great way to tune up your marksmanship skills prior to the Smallbore Championships at Camp Perry which commence July 18, 2012. Due to range capacity, the championships are limited to 200 shooters for both Position and Prone.
The NRA Blog reports that: “Despite being so close to the National Matches, the championship ends just before Camp Perry’s smallbore practice begins on July 18. Bristol is also a short drive from Camp Perry and many shooters compete at both places, using the Metric Championship as some last minute practice before the big show.” The Jameson Inn in Elkhart, Indiana is the host hotel. Mention the National Metric Championships to receive a special rate.
Forum member George (aka gcarbrera) let us know that complete Shooting Sports schedules for the 2012 London Olympic Games can now be viewed online. Olympic shooting events start on July 28, 2012 with Women’s 10m Air Rifle and Men’s 10m Air Pistol. The final rifle event, Men’s 50m 3-Position Finals, will be held August 6, 2012.
Gary Elesio of Competition Machine has come up with a new product for smallbore shooters. Gary has a new H1 Tubegun Chassis for the Hall custom rimfire action, a very high-quality, single-shot action that can be fitted with a Jewell trigger. The new H1 Chassis, like other Elesio tubegun kits, features a fully-adjustable skeleton-style stock, and a tubular forearm. The forearm can be rotated so a sling-shooter can “dial in” the best angle for his hand-stop. We think this new H1 action should be popular with rimfire prone and position shooters who are looking for an affordable, all-American alternative to expensive European match rifles. Below is a “sneak peek” at Elesio’s new H1. This shows the H1 receiver housing fitted with a Picatinny-style rail. MSRP for the H1 has yet to be announced.
About the Hall Action
The $1075.00 Hall action is a high-quality, custom-crafted design built to benchrest standards. The action is 1 3/8″ diameter by 7 ” long and is made of 416 stainless steel, with heat-treated, tool steel locking lugs. The action features an Anschutz-type feed ramp, and it comes with a trigger housing which uses 40X Remington-type triggers (Jewell Remington triggers will work). The Hall action is currently available with either right or left port, but only right bolt.

We were given access to the new Rimfire Service Center and the .338 Lapua Magnum loading facility. The Rimfire Service Center is a brand new facility dedicated to supporting top-level rimfire shooters in all disciplines, including Prone, 3-Position, Silhouette, Benchrest and more. Lapua has over 2 million rounds of various grades of match ammunition on hand for shooters to test and purchase. The RSC has a 100-meter test tunnel where groups are measured under ideal conditions with electronic sensor-equipped “paperless” target frames placed at 50 meters and 100 meters. Shooters can make appointments to visit the center and test ammo in their own rifles. A detailed report on the RSC has just been released on German’s Rifleman’s Journal website.

Tyler Rico — remember that name. We predict you’ll be hearing much more about this young man in the years ahead. Tyler, the youngest shooter ever to earn the CMP Distinguished Rifleman Badge, is one of the best of the new generation of shooters coming up through the junior ranks. With very sound fundamentals, Tyler has shown the ability to shoot just about any kind of rifle, at any distance — from 10m to 1000 yards. And despite his young age, Tyler has the discipline and mental focus it takes to win. Tyler demonstrated that most recently at the National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships (NJOSC) where he won the 10m Air Rifle Title, securing a place on the National Junior Team. Tyler will continue to compete in NJOSC smallbore competition over the next few days, where he will be one of the favorites in the Men’s 50m Rifle Three Position and Men’s 50m Rifle Prone.
Tyler has shown the ability to compete head to head with adult-age group shooters — even High Masters. Last year, Tyler won the Service Rifle division outright at the 2011 Western Creedmoor Cup. Among junior across-the-course shooters, he is one of the best ever. He was the top Junior Shooter at the Camp Perry National Trophy Individual Matches four years in a row (2011, 2010, 2009, 2008). A senior at Tucson Wells High School, Tyler will enroll in the U.S. Air Force Academy as a cadet this June.

Unlike many Air Rifle and Smallbore shooters, Tyler Rico is equally capable (and confident) when shooting centerfire rifles — whether ARs in Service Rifle, or “space guns” in across the course and long-range matches.
