RCBS Bench Priming Tool Upgrade by Holland’s Gunsmithing
Gunsmith Darrell Holland has invented an interesting upgrade to the RCBS Auto Bench Priming Tool. If your hand starts to hurt after priming dozens of cases with a hand-held, squeeze-type priming tool, you may want to consider Holland’s invention, which he calls the “Perfect Primer Seater” (PPS).
Holland basically has modified the RCBS lever, adding a precise crush control and a means of measuring depth with a gauge. He claims this gives “an EXACT primer seating depth based on primer pocket depth and primer thickness”. With Holland’s PPS, primer seating depth is controlled with a rotating wheel that limits lever travel in precise gradations. You can buy the complete priming system for $215.00, or, if you already own the RCBS Auto Prime tool, you can purchase an adapter kit (with base, arm, adjuster, and gauge etc.) for $120.00. To order, visit Hollandguns.com then click on “Reloading Equipment”.
User Review by Tommy Todd
Sierra Bullets’ Chief Ballistician Tommy Todd acquired the Holland Perfect Primer Seater, and gave it a positive review. Todd writes: “This cartridge case priming system allows you to measure the primer pocket depth and adjust the seating tool to match the primer seating depth for a contact fit with a measured lot of primers to the cases you are working with. Mr. Darrell Holland has taken a standard RCBS automatic bench-mounted priming tool and modified it to a new level of precision. The modifications allow you to measure the primer pocket depth, primer height, and with the addition of an adjustable stop on the priming tool achieve precision primer seating, rather than how the primer ‘feels'[.]
If you are already utilizing the RCBS priming tool, Mr. Holland offers an adapter kit to upgrade your equipment. If you are looking for a new priming unit, I suggest giving this product a try. Increasing consistency when seating primers should result in smaller groups[.]”

I modified an old Lachmiller Primer Seater w/ a different punch setup and a shorter throw that is adjustable for depth using regular press shellholders w/ more leverage utilizing the same cam design that will seat primers w/ the best of them. It’s very similiar in operation as this one which looks like a good one. I like it better than the hand sq

K&M has been doing this & better for decades
Yes K&M has. I really like their primer seater. I’ve had them since they first come out but at least the one I rigged up works very well and is just as accurate.
K&M’s tool is a hand held, not a bench or press mounted unit. Please reread the intro.
My modified Lachmiller is also bench mounted.
Until I see a definitive test, I will go with the fact that every short range benchrest shooter that I am aware of seats by feel. IMO some people just love to pick up new reloading toys, and obsess about details that they have not proven improve accuracy. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. It constitutes a hobby within a hobby, and really makes equipment manufacturers happy.
I’ve tried this tool (RCBS, w/o the conversion) and I thought it had good feel (sensitivity). The old Lachmiller definetly does also. Out of necessity sometimes a reloader with painful hands and especially thumbs uses a tool of this type. I know that is my case. Portability might be a problem. IMHO if a person already had this tool and wanted to seat primers this method (Measuring heighth of primers) the conversion would be a good way to go.
Hats off to hollandsguns. Looks like a handy tool to have.
I use feeler gauges under the lever to adjust depth of primer pocket if I need to. I’ve only had to do that once, otherwise the RCBS bench primer tool works perfectly fine by itself. When I check the depth it’s between .005″ and .007″, Bob’s yer uncle.
That bench priming tool looks very handy indeed. Well done to the guys at Holland Guns. Thanks for posting the useful photos as well.
Can you prime 577-450 cases as the shell holder does not fit the RCBS hand primer ?
