New SAAMI Cartridges: 277 SIG FURY, 6.5 WBY RPM, 6.8 Western
The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute, Inc., (SAAMI), has announced the acceptance of three (3) new cartridges for SAAMI standardization: 1) 277 SIG FURY; 2) 6.5 Weatherby Rebated Precision Magnum (WBY RPM); 3) 6.8 Western. While the 277 SIG FURY was developed originally for the U.S. Military, it should serve well for hunters, as will the new 6.5 Weatherby RPM and 6.8 Western. SAAMI has standardized the dimensions, max pressures, and load specs for all these three new cartridges.
277 SIG FURY from SIG Sauer
Developed by SIG SAUER for the U.S. Military, the 277 SIG FURY boasts a SAAMI maximum average pressure of 80,000 psi, driving a 135-grain bullet to 3,000+ fps. That 80K PSI pressure is WAY higher than almost all other cartridge types. To achieve these high pressures, the 277 FURY uses a hybrid case with a brass body and harder alloy metal case head. This design allows the cartridge to run very high pressures. Dan Horner of SIG Sauer told us: “When the handloaders get hold of this brass, it will be a game-changer for sure”. We envision this cartridge could be necked down to 6.5 mm and it would dramatically out-perform the 6.5 Creedmoor. And yes the official name of the cartridge is all caps “277 SIG FURY”.

6.5 Weatherby Rebated Precision Magnum
Developed by Weatherby, the 6.5 Weatherby Rebated Precision Magnum (WBY RPM) was introduced with a maximum average pressure of 65,000 psi, with a 140-grain bullet traveling at a velocity of 3,075 fps. The 6.5 WBY RPM offers signficantly higher velocities that most other 6.5mm cartridges, including the 6.5-284 and .265 Win Mag. SEE 6.5 Cartridge Comparison Table

6.8 Western from Winchester
Developed by Olin Winchester, the 6.8 Western was introduced with a maximum average pressure of 65,000 psi, with a .277-caliber 175-grain bullet traveling at a velocity of 2,840 fps. A shorter variant of the Winchester Short Magnum (WSM) family, the new cartridge appears to be about .090″ shorter than the .270 WSM. It has the same 35-degree shoulder angle as the .270 WSM.

6.8 Western might have actually been usefull for something had it used a 6.5 and or 7mm projectile.
I think this is Olin’s way of eliminating having to pay royalty fees to Rick Jamison on the 270 WSM.
Curious about the 6.8 Western necked up to 7mm. PRC and RCM cases are a bit too long for a 700 short action. Have been thinking about shortening one of them but this may by just what I’ve been looking for without having to form brass.
Also curious about the 6.8 Sig in conventional receivers. Read somewhere that 700’s had been tested and were fine. Guess only time and additional testing will tell.
Note that the 3000 fps MV for the 277 SIG FURY is from a 16″ (sixteen inch) barrel. With a normal 22-26″ barrel that MV jumps to well over 3200. We need MUCH more info on “brass” availability, most importantly, whether the “washer” needs to be replaced between reloads. With the neck wall thickness less than a 308 Win (SAMMI), wildcat opportunities galore!!! And the standard bolt face. Had SIG not dropped their one-and-only .338 LM rifle offering, that would be a stellar opportunity for this tech. Bottom line, WOW!!!
…the other, potential, issue with the 277 SIG FURY is whether a “standard” (.473) bolt face action will support a 80K psi cartridge.

Just being able to change twist rate in 277 cal is the improvement. 1-7.5 browning & 1-8 Winchester m70 Now just do it to the 270 win would be Awesome!
We have far to many different cartridges now! I’ve seen very good ones come to market only to be dropped in favor of some new super duper cartridge that offers mouthing new,save maybe faster twist rate witch would work better on existing cartridges with out the need for more types of brass,,,he’ll the ammo companies can’t make enough of the all ready established ones!
I don’t need a new cartridges I need is more components for the ones I all ready have!I’ve hunted for the last ten years with a 450 marlin,and have taken ten decent bucks with it ,,,I just stalk closer,I’m 67/now if I can get closer so can you!my other favorite is the 350 Remington magnum,good out to 300 yrs I know I’ve killed bucks that far!During remington 200 brain rem.foreplay bullets
