Shooting USA’s Jim Scoutten Passes Away at Age 77

Jim James Scoutten shooting usa television American Shooter

Sadly, Shooting USA host and respected outdoor sports journalist Jim Scoutten has passed at age 77, following a brief illness. Noted as “one of the most iconic voices in the shooting sports industry”, Jim Scoutten hosted the popular Shooting USA cable television broadcast for decades. He was a leading force in the firearms industry. This Editor had the chance to meet Jim on many occasions at SHOT Show, and I can confirm that he was a talented man of high integrity who was dedicated to advancing the shooting sports and protecting Second Amendment freedoms. The Shooting USA series will continue hosted by Jim’s capable son John Scoutten.

Yesterday, the Shooting USA Facebook page stated: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jim Scoutten. In his thirty years of reporting the shooting sports, Jim played a pivotal role in the industry and will be greatly missed.” Jim’s concluding message from each show was, famously: “As always, shoot safely, shoot often, and keep ‘em in the ten ring.”

Here are just a few of the 1,000+ comments on Facebook:

I watched Jim for many years. What a wealth of knowledge he was. Thank you Jim for all you did for the shooting sports, your legacy will live on! Even though I am rarely in the “ten ring”, I will keep shooting often! Rest in peace Sir!

There are a lot of heavy hearts tonight. Jim is a LEGEND. My condolences to the family. Thank You, Sir, for your devotion to the industry and to shooters everywhere. Rest easy.

He was such an icon in the shooting industry! Was so proud I made one his shows from Bianchi Cup. My condolences to the family.

He always made Wednesday night TV something to look forward to. He was so passionate towards the shooting sports and outdoors communities.

Jim did so much for the industry and was truly respected. Prayers to his family.

Jim James Scoutten shooting usa television American Shooter

Jim Scoutten Was a Notable Defender of the Second Amendment
In the early 1990s Jim worked on the American Shooter TV program, which was then followed by the very popular Shooting USA series. Media leaders praised Jim’s contribution to the shooting world and his role in protecting Second Amendment Rights.

“Jim leaves a strong legacy as a tireless defender of shooting, firearms, and our Second-Amendment rights. His voice was unique and powerful; we will honor Jim by carrying on in the endless fight to defend the Constitution and will support his family and team as they forge a new future for Shooting USA.” — Mitch Petrie, V.P. Programming of Outdoor Sportsman Group Networks.

“Jim Scoutten [reported] the stories of the shooting industry and the competitive shooting disciplines since 1993. In [30] years of broadcasting on four national networks, he’s done more to popularize the shooting sports than any other individual or organization, reaching multiple generations with the invitation to bring out your guns and enjoy some competition.” — Garry Mason, Outdoor Legends Hall of Fame.

FirearmsNews.com reported:

During [Jim Scoutten’s] tenure, the American Shooter TV program became the highest-rated outdoors television program in history, garnering more than one million fans nationwide. In recent years, Scoutten has been a part of the Shooting USA program, a show that he has co-hosted with his eldest son John, and the Sighting In with Shooting USA program, both series appearing on Outdoor Channel along with full seasons on My Outdoor TV (MOTV).

In this Shooting USA episode, Jim Scoutten showcased High Power Silhouette Rifles.

A Franklin, Tennesse resident, Scoutten’s firm but gentle voice and familiar smile were eagerly welcomed into the homes of America’s shooting enthusiasts for three decades, an invitation that made him the most watched firearms reporter in industry history thanks to his knowledge of firearms, his passion for the shooting sports, and journalistic integrity that marked his long career.

This week on Shooting USA John Scoutten tests three Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum revolvers. These S&W wheelguns are reviewed for the Shooting USA TV episode this Wednesday, January 25, 2023. This episode also has a Talking Tech segment explaining different types of hammer-fired handguns.

John tests the three S&W revolvers using Hornady 240gr XTP ammunition. He first tests a beefy 45-oz. model 629 stainless with 5″ barrel, then a model 629 Performance Center with short 2.6″ barrel. Lastly he tests the ultra-lightweight model 329 PD AirLight. For that black-finished AirLight wheelgun, the Barrel is actually stainless steel, but the frame is scandium alloy, and the cylinder is Titanium alloy.

In this video Eagle Eye Shooting Shares Highlights from the 2022 GAP Grind

Excellent Attendance at 10th Annual GAP Grind Event
The year’s largest PRS match drew hundreds of attendees, and more than 80,000 rounds were fired throughout the three-day event. In addition to competition stages, the GAP Grind featured a vendor area, live music and entertainment. Bushnell gave out $5,000 to the top place finishers and added over $5,000 worth of product to the prize table. Trophies were awarded to the top 5 teams, top 5 professionals, and to the top 5 amateurs.

Lots of Action, with 20+ Stages
The GAP Grind is a challenging, “high tempo” match with minimal down-time between stages. Over the course of 20+ stages, competitors will fire 200+ shots at a variety of steel, paper, moving, and reactive targets out to 1,200 yards. Targets vary in size/difficulty based on the shooter’s position, distance, and time allotted. Most stages include “stressors” — i.e. time limits or required movement(s).

GAP Grind Pro-Am Format — Seasoned Shooters Help Newcomers
The GAP Grind typically attracts nearly 400 competitors — half experienced shooters and the other half newcomers to the sport. The key to growing the shooting sports is attracting new shooters. The best way to bring in “new blood” seems to be the Pro-Am type format. At the GAP Grind, experienced shooters share their knowledge and guide the new shooters through the competition.

GAP Grind Hardware

You’ll find the latest and greatest PRS hardware at the GAP Grind. Over the past few seasons, most top competitors have “stepped down” from the 6.5/6mm Creedmoor to the smaller, more efficient 6mm Dasher, 6BRA, 6 GT and other 6mm cartridges. The Dasher offers excellent accuracy with less recoil than the 6.5 Creedmoor. Also, many competitors will be switching to the impressive new Zeiss FFP LRP S3 and S5 scopes in the months ahead.

Today Shooting USA TV features the 2021 Bianchi Cup, hosted May 24-28, 2021 at the Green Valley Rifle & Pistol Club in Hallsville, Missouri (near Columbia). The 2020 Bianchi Cup was cancelled due to COVID. In 2021 the four stages of fire are back, but without international competitors, who were locked out due to pandemic travel restrictions. But there was still plenty of superb marksmanship.

This episode of Shooting USA airs Wednesday, March 23, 2022 at 9:00 PM Eastern and Pacific, 8:00 PM Central on the Outdoor Channel. Shooting USA is also available On Demand via Vimeo.com.

Officially, the annual competition is known as the National Championship of NRA Action Pistol. But its is generally called the Bianchi Cup — from the trophy named for one of the founders, John Bianchi. In the past 30 years the match has become the richest handgun tournament in the world.

The Bianchi Cup has been called the most prestigious pistol tournament in the world. After the cancellation of the 2020 Bianchi Cup due to COVID-19 restrictions, bringing the match back for 2021 involved challenges given health and safety protocols. In 2021 the NRA turned the organization and management of the match over to a new group from the Green Valley Rifle and Pistol Club.

Due to the high accuracy required in each stage of the Bianchi Cup, the tournament is considered one of the most difficult handgun championships on the planet.

Over the past 30+ years the Bianchi Cup has become the richest handgun event in the world, with cash and prizes for the best scores on four stages of fire for both revolver and semi-auto pistol divisions.

Bianchi Cup — Classic Course of Fire
The Bianchi Cup is a combination of Speed and Accuracy. Competitors shoot from both standing and prone positions and are also required to shoot with both strong and weak hands at various stages. Stages may combine stationary and moving targets. The Course of Fire consists of four separate matches:: Practical, Barricade, and Moving Target, and Falling Plates. Each of the four events requires 48 shots to complete. 480 points are possible on each event. Three of the four are scored on the NRA tombstone P1 target. You must hit in the 10-ring or inner X-Ring on EVERY shot to shoot a “clean” 1920.

Every year Hornady hosts the very popular Zombies in the Heartland event. This “Pandemic” 3-Gun fun match, one of the biggest three-gun shoots in the nation, took place in June 2021 at the Heartland Public Shooting Park in Grand Island, Nebraska. It was great to see the match return after cancellation in 2020. The Pandemic featured a rich prize table worth over $150,000. Prizes include pistols, rifles, shotguns, scopes, AR uppers, gun parts, and gear of all kinds.

The Pandemic is a veritable theme park for shootists, with many fun stages and innovative targets. Many unique, reactive zombie targets have been developed specifically for this match. The use of paper targets has been minimized — so it’s mostly “bang and clang”.

There were ten multi-gun stages this past year. Rifles, pistols and shotguns are used on most stages. There were also fun side-matches. We highly recommend you watch the video below to see highlights from a past Pandemic.

Talladega 600 Southern Classic on Shooting USA TV Today

CMP Marksmanship program talladega park 600 match

Today, October 20, 2021 Shooting USA TV features the Talladega 600 held this past January. Shooting USA notes: “Competition is back, as America gets back to normal again. For the Civilian Marksmanship Program … the Talladega 600 brought competitors from across the country — all glad to be back shooting. Dozens of competitors are on the line at the Talladega Marksmanship Park, the impressive home range of the CMP.”

Shooting USA noted that this event was a welcome return to normalcy: “After a year of cancelled competition, the Talladega 600 offered days of shooting in matches for most everything you might own, from rimfire to High Power. That had shooters from across the country emptying their gun-safes, and driving down to Alabama to shoot.” After being postponed due to storm damage from Hurricane Zeta, the CMP’s 2020 Talladega 600 event was rescheduled to January 2021.
