Improve Digital Scale Performance with Affordable Line Conditioner
Many reloaders are now using precision digital scales that can measure down to a single kernel of powder. These scales, such as the Denver Instrument MXX-123, are remarkable measuring systems, but you can’t expect them to perform optimally with inconsistent electrical output from a wall socket. We’ve seen the line voltage in some houses vary from 95 to 160 volts. That kind of fluctuation can damage sensitive electronics. A line conditioner can help you get the most from your digital scales and electronic powder dispensers. The line conditioner takes the “juice” from the outlet and actively corrects the voltage to provide a constant 120 volts AC to your machines.
Forum member Danny Reever explains: “We have talked before about the need for surge protection and line conditioning for sensitive electronic equipment like scales and powder dispensers. However the price of said equipment is perhaps a turn-off for a lot of guys.”
Thanks to Danny, now our readers can afford a heavy-duty, high-performance line conditioner/surge protector. Reever has found a quality line conditioner from APC, a well-known manufacturer, at a bargain price — Just $99.99. The APC H10, 1000VA unit is rated for 1000 Watts (continuous). The APC device automatically steps up low voltage and steps down high voltage to levels that are suitable for your equipment. The APC H10 also provides noise filtering and industrial-grade surge protection. Selling elsewhere for $275.00, the APC H10 1000VA is now available for just $99.99 from Tiger Direct.

Danny tells us: “This is a real deal for 4900 joules surge protection. The unit weighs a hefty 16.1 pounds and measures 17″ wide X 9.5″ deep. I received mine yesterday and all I can say is $99.99 buys you one nice piece of equipment. It’s built like a tank for worry free and better component performance.”

You can get the same exact thing through the almost identical website at Circuit City for $20 less: http://www.circuitcity.com/cgi-bin/ShoppingCart.asp?prchbcart=y&msg=0&q=1. But shipping is kind of expensive…$25.89 to my location.
Editor: Maybe there is a special price in your area. But when we checked the price at CircuitCity.com for the APC H10 Line Conditioner, the listed price was $149.98. That’s forty dollars more, not twenty dollars less.

Jon–the URL you list for Circuit City doesn’t work as an entry page. Where did you see the $20 cheaper price?
And the two sites are so identical that the shipping was the same on TigerDirect to. So the $20 savings still applies.
Pretty expensive when the scale actually runs on 9VDC. I built a regulated 9VDC with a 12V AC adapter, a 3 terminal 9-volt regulator IC and a couple of capacitors for all of about $8. It works great on my RCBS.
I’ve got a better solution. Don’t buy an MXX-123/VIC-123. I’ve had two, with all the expensive line conditioners/regulators to go with them, and they were still [disappointing in function]. Buy a RCBS Chargemaster and don’t look back.
How about the APC LE1200 1200VA Voltage Regulator from amazon.com. It costs $48.36 and is available for free shipping.
Those devices already step down to low voltage DC and only draw a small percentage of the available power.
If you are running a 15amp 110V load on a 16amp circut and have voltage swings you might be ‘on the edge’ and need a line conditioner. In any case 1000VA line conditioner is extreem overkill and is intended for say a very high end power hungry sound and video reciver on a 20amp circut.
To be blunt, I don’t believe these simple “conditioners” solve anything but worst problems. Right voltage isn’t the only feature of “quality electricity”.
If you use UPS (Un-interruptible Power Source), you have to get real “Online” model to get decent sin wave output. Cheaper models (anything up to a few thousand) just give you square wave which screws up most electronics.
That said, I haven’t got time to investigate the APC conditioner, especially since I don’t live in US. But I use consumer grade APC UPSes etc.
I’m not sure what the Daily Bulletin, or should I say Daily “Ad BULL-A-TON”! Come on is it info or ads in the BULLETIN ?
