New Modular Tactical Rifle from Bergara
Bergara USA offers a new metal-chassis rifle for tactical shooters, such as PRS competitors. Dubbed the Bergara Premier Series Tactical Rifle (aka BPR-17), this new rig features an XLR chassis, and is chambered in .308 Win or 6.5 Creedmoor. With a $2,200.00 MSRP, Bergara’s new rig costs less than a full custom, but it is WAY more expensive than the new Ruger Precision Rifle which sells for $1100-$1250 (street price) at most dealers. For Bergara, this may be a case of “too little, too late” — at least when compared to the new Ruger rifle.
The Bergara Premier Tactical is built with Bergara’s Premier action (which featurs a coned bolt nose and breech for smooth feeding). Notably, this rifle is fitted with a Timney 517 flat trigger with safety, adjustable from 1.5 – 4 pounds. The 416 stainless barrel has a Dead Air suppressor-ready Key Mount Brake. Both barrel and action are Cerakote finished in matte black.
The XLR chassis features an adjustable length of pull (11.25 – 14.75 inches) and adjustable cheek height. The lightweight chassis buttstock features QD flush cups on both sides, ambidextrous cheek rest, mono-pod provision and an enclosed design. For more information, visit www.bergarausa.com.

The XLR chassis shown appears to be from their Element line, including their Tac Lite buttstock. They sell it for $595. When you start totaling up the components, the numbers match the MSRP pricing ($2199). Without an objective and unbiased, side-by-side, live fire comparison with the Ruger (with MSRP of $1399) its WAY too early to say the extra $800 isn’t justified. Suffice to say, the barrel and chassis reps are on the Bergara side. That said, when mass production pricing is concerned, its really hard not to suspect that the value king is going to be the Ruger. It will be interesting to see how the Ruger impacts the hugely overpopulated PSR segment.
I got to handle and shoot one of Bergaras rifles at a trade show earlier this year, and I must say that I am impressed. The action was smooth, and well manufactured, the barrel seemed very nice, and it shot quite well. Around 1/2 moa with factory ammo if I recall correctly. This might be a good rifle for someone wanting a nicer rifle than the Ruger PR, an Remington, or a savage, but not wanting to fork out as much as a custom rifle.
I can tell you from experience, I’ve shot both the Bergara LRP and the Ruger RPR. The Bergara LRP will out shoot the RPR everyday and anyway and is well worth the small additional investment. Bergara LRP has an MSRP of $2,190.00 but generally sells for about $1,900.00. If a person is willing to put out $1,700 for an RPR then 2 or 3 hundred more should not scare them away from a far superior rifle.. Thanks
