From Canada, with Lugs — New Ultimatum U300 Action
There is a new tactical action from Canada with some very interesting features. The innovative U300 Bolt Action from Ultimatum Precision features a Rem 700 footprint and three-lug bolt with 60° bolt lift (like a Barnard). The floating bolt head is quickly removable, so you can swap to a different rim size in a few minutes. Another interesting feature is a special “Battery Safety”. The firing pin can only protrude from the bolt face if the lugs are locked and in battery. This ensures that if the bolt head is not properly installed, the rifle does not fire.
The black Cerakoted U300 action is strong and tough — the 4340 steel is hard-nitrided for surface durability. The action-maker says the hard nitride and Cerakote coatings improve wear resistance, corrosion resistance, chemical resistance, and hardness. The U300 action fits AICS-compatible detachable box magazines.
Designed for Savage-type Barrel Nuts
The Ultimatum U300 system was design to accept a barrel nut so “pre-fit” barrels (configured for the U300 bolt) can be easily installed (or swapped) by the owner with no gunsmithing required. The U300 uses standard 1-1/16″ x 16 Remington 700 tenon threads, so it can fit pre-chambered barrels with Remington-style threading. NOTE: Barrels headspaced properly by a smith can also be mounted conventionally without a nut. The user can choose the system he prefers.
Ultimatum U300 Action features:
· Removable Floating 3-Lug Bolt Head
· 5/16″ Integrated Recoil Lug
· Battery Safety
· 20 MOA Picatinny rail, secured with six #8-40 bolts and two pins
· 4340 Steel with Hard Nitride Finish and Cerakote.
· Compatible with AICS-style magazines
Ultimatum Precision has started shipping the first U300 short actions. Suggested MSRP starts at $998.00 U.S. Dollars. The action-maker plans to release both a long action model and a .338-specific model later this year. Ultimatum Precision is located in Abbotsford, BC, Canada, with a subsidiary in Washington state, USA. For more info, visit www.UltimatumPrecision.com.

Considering the integrated recoil lug, rail, and nitriding, the pricing, starting at $998.00 US is interesting. However, while they use “precision” in multiple places on their website, I find nothing that actually speaks to how they build that precision in (e.g., how the raceways are cut, concentricity, etc.). I’d also like to know their plans for bolt diameter for the upcoming 338 model.
Their Facebook page showed 4 week delivery time back in July, seems they have virtually no stock. When I just ran their configurator, the only configuration that has any stock is SA, .308 bolt face, RB, RP, which has one (1) in stock…but accepting backorders.
BTW, a post on their FB page from early September says that “pictures” of the .338 version will not be available until early 2017. So shipping in 2106 seems unlikely – or FB needs updating.
Folks (here in the US) might also consider the upcoming, US-made, Curtis Custom “Axiom” action (very similar spec in stainless at $750 USD) – http://www.curtiscustom.com/product/axiom-4/
The Curtis has been coming “soon” for 2 years. Has anyone seen one yet?
According to the Curtis site, the Vector SA is in production with a .308 bolt face. The Axion is still shown as “coming”. If made-in-the-USA and $750 vs $998 are of importance…
Remington barrels require a ” bolt nose ” to stick out in front of the lugs. A savage barrel can do with a flat face bolt like the one pictured above. Then a 20 TPI thread on the action would be ideal for aftermarket savage barrels . Aftermarket Remington barrels would need the barrel chamber recess cut out and the chamber pushed forward to properly work unless I am wrong. So I am not that impressed for the moment. They could also have gone with an integral rail on top.
They certainly could have gone with an integrated rail on top but that would probably blow the sub $1k price they were going for. Plus, a double pinned with 6 screw rail should do the trick I’d guess.
I’m confused on the barrel setup though. You specifically market it for barrel nut usage but don’t make it out of the box compatible for savage or remage prefits? Kind of an odd choice.
Barrel threads will be switched to 20 TPI in the next few weeks.
