Titanium Actions Coming Soon from Borden Accuracy
Jim Borden of Borden Accuracy tells us that he will soon offer Titanium actions: “The Alpine and Timberline family of actions will soon be available for sale with Titanium action bodies. Stay tuned!”
Jim provided this photo of a prototype Alpine Magnum Titanium action body on the scale. Note it is just a bit over one-half pound without bolt. That’s light-weight. Jim said he will “send bolt body, action body, recoil lug, bolt stop and bolt shroud for PVD treatment next week”. Jim hopes to be shooting the finished prototype Titanium Alpine action in two weeks.
AccurateShooter.com will provide a full report on the Borden Titanium actions when they reach final production stage. The reduced weight benefits game hunters who have to carry their rifles far afield all day long. We also like the idea of a Titanium action in a small-caliber, carry-around varmint rifle. With a low-recoiling cartridge such as the 20 Vartarg or .223 Remington, it makes sense to have a light-weight rifle that’s easy to pick up and move around.

Another Borden Jewel!
$700 mark-up just to put a different material in the machine using the same fixtures and tooling? Heat treated 6Al4V round bar is not $700 per 8″ piece.
I might pay $1900 for something titanium that has integrated 20MOA rail and recoil lug, fluted 3-lug bolt repeater with Jewell trigger etc but for a basic rem700 footprint, that’s just taking advantage of ignorant customers.
Wouldn’t this mean adding another pound to the butt stock for balance?
I guess not if the barrel was very light as well.
Is the bolt titanium or conventional? Is there any galling between steel or stainless steel and titanium?
The titanium actions usually go together with a Proof carbon-fiber wrapped barrel and a lightweight stock.
More a carry/field gun than a target killer.
Titanium does not machine as “slick” as 416 stainless or even 4140.
It is “weird” stuff and in “high-stress” applications, requires special fasteners etc. Talk to airframe fitters who work on “serious’ aircraft and such.
It is also not the easiest material to investment cast, though it CAN be done by some tricky work in a vacuum system.
Worth all the drama?
Depends on how “Ultra-Light” you want to get.
Historically, Mr. Stoner solved the receiver strength problem by NOT requiring his clever little rifles to transfer firing stresses through the aluminium body, but through a short, steel “barrel extension”.
Probably the last place I would look to save weight but it is a nice looking action.
This would be interesting if the action had integral lug and rail but otherwise . . .
Unfortunately not a solid top or integrated rail, not larger Diameter. I’m waiting for BAT to do their repeaters in titanium.
