Sierra’s New “GameChanger” Tipped Hunting Bullet
Sierra Bullets has just introduced a new line of hunting bullets, called the GameChanger series. These are claimed to combine match-bullet accuracy with highly effective performance on game animals. From what we can tell this is Sierra MatchKing (SMK) projectile modified with a new hollow cavity and tipped front end. The official product release says: “Sierra re-engineered their legendary MatchKing bullet into a hollow-point design for quick expansion and fitted it with a transparent green tip for ballistic uniformity. Inside, the GameChanger features a unique construction that utilizes a special lead alloy surrounded by a tough copper jacket that delivers excellent penetration and expansion[.]”

Is that not a Ballistic Tip?
What’s the minimum velocity for expansion?
I’d like to see detailed terminal performance comparisons using same velocity and distance to target but with different barrel twist rates.
I always found that 69 grain SMKs from a 1:7 twist were much more effective than anything from a slower twist barrel… but I’ve never seen a detailed or formalized test.
I just loaded some of these up for my tikka ctr 308. I didn’t have much time but only after 4 trial powder/seating depth combinations, I ended up with a one inch 5 shot group at 200 yards. 42.5 grains of imr 4064 got this gamechanger to exit my 20″ barrel at 2648 fps. I plan on tweaking this load to shrink the group just a little more.(I have a 155 AMax load that shoots .5 at 200 yards)
This is a pretty exciting announcement in my opinion. They look like a solid option to try. I think Sierra’s misstep is not bonding the core, however. Advertising this round as having “excellent penetration” puts them at competition with bullets that are almost all bonded.
I shot a cow elk at about 100 yards with a Sierra Gamechanger just a few days ago. It was the .308 dia. 165 gr. bullet with 56 grs. of H4350 loaded as a 30-06. The bullet went right through the heart leaving a fairly small hole on each side. I did not recover the bullet. I have seen other brands of bullets do much more damage to an animals heart. I posted three photos of the heart at https://www.longrangehunting.com/threads/sierra-gamechanger.205661/page-2
