IMR 8208 XBR Powder Now Available at Powder Valley Outdoors

powder valley imr 8208 xbr powder sale

powder valley imr 8208 xbr powderIMR 8208 XBR powder is a great propellent that has shown superb consistency, delivering great accuracy and low ES/SD in our testing. We have used this powder with success in .308 Win and other cartridges. The burn rate is slightly slower than Vihtavuori N133 and a bit faster than Hodgdon H4895. IMR 8208 XBR is suitable for many cartridge types including .204 Ruger, 22 BR, .223 Rem, 6 PPC, 6BR (lighter bullets), and .308 Winchester. It works great for varmint hunting loads as well as benchrest competition.

IMR 8208 XBR has been exceedingly difficult to obtain in the last year or so, but that has changed. Currently Powder Valley Outdoors has IMR 8208 XBR one-pounders in stock at $54.99. Sorry, 8-pounders are not available at this time.

If Powder Valley sells out, Natchez Shooting & Outdoors also has some IMR 8208 XBR one-pounders in stock. Current price is $51.69 (one-pound). Also Brownell’s has 8208 XBR one-pounders in stock for $55.99. NOTE: Neither Natchez nor Brownells have the 8-lb jugs of IMR 8208 XBR.

Stellar Accuracy and Exceptional Temperature Insensitivity
Field testing has shown that IMR XBR 8208 is extremely stable across a very wide temperature range. At SHOT Show 2010, we interviewed Chris Hodgdon, who gave us the “inside story” on this IMR powder. Chris shared lab test results showing how load pressure varied with ambient temperature. The data was stunning. Basically 8208 XBR showed almost constant pressures from below freezing to well over 100° F. This editor has personally never seen a powder test that revealed “flat-line” results like 8208 XBR, with recorded pressures remaining virtually unchanged over a huge temperature range. And IMR 8208 XBR has been used with great success in benchrest competition by Lou Murdica and others. When you combine its temp stability with such proven accuracy, IMR 8208 XBR is indeed a very exceptional powder.

Measure Pull Weight with Lyman Electronic Trigger Pull Gauge

lyman digital electronic adjustable trigger pull weight gauge

We like Lyman’s Electronic Digital Trigger Pull Gauge, which is faster and more precise than the previous model. The latest Lyman Pull Gauge measures trigger pull weights from 1 ounce to 12 pounds with resolution of 0.1 ounces (2.8 grams). It features an adjustable, 4-position rod which retracts into the gauge body. We think that anyone running match triggers below 2.5 pounds pull weight should have a gauge like this. Among the pull gauges on the market, we think the Lyman unit offers great performance for the price.

Good Pricing Currently with Major Discounts

This Lyman Pull Gauge has a $69.95 MSRP, but it’s now on sale at many vendors. Grab one of these gauges for $41.53 at MidwayUSA, $47.48 on Amazon, and $48.79 at Palmetto SA.

Features: More Precise Strain Gauge | Improved Grip Shape | Adjustable Rod Lengths

Lyman’s Electronic Digital Trigger Pull Gauge is designed to be the fastest and most accurate trigger pull gauge available. State-of-the-art strain gauge technology allows for repeatable accuracy of 1/10 ounce (2.8 grams). The gauge features a large, easy-to-read LCD display and you can switch from ounces to grams with the push of a button. The gauge can also deliver a pull weight average of the last 10 readings. That’s very helpful, particularly when working with factory triggers that may not be very consistent.

The Lyman Trigger Pull Gauge features a solid, collapsible rod with four locking positions. Being able to adjust length makes it easier to use the gauge with a wide variety of firearms — pistols, rifles, and shotguns. The locking feature prevents the rod from flexing when applying pressure to the trigger. When not in use, the rod conveniently collapses into the gauge body, making the whole unit more compact. The new Trigger Pull Gauge comes in an internally-padded plastic case that can be easily stored in a drawer or on your work bench.

Removable External Weight Improves Benchrest Rifle Balance

rifle weight Joe ring

rifle weight Joe ringCredit our buddy Joe Friedrich for this simple yet effective accessory for your benchrest rifle. Joe shoots a .22 LR benchrest rig with a barrel tuner. When he added weights to his tuner, he found his rifle no longer balanced well. He wanted to add some weight in the rear without drilling holes in the stock. He also wanted the weight to be removable, and easily placed on another rifle in his stable. He wanted a weight that could be moved from gun to gun as needed.

At a local sporting goods shop Joe found a 1.5-lb ankle weight that comes in a padded, tubular elastic cover. It’s like a 1.5-lb sausage in a soft, stretchy nylon cover. (Imagine a really fat, heavy bungee cord). Joe simply attached a plastic zip tie at the end to make a loop that fits perfectly over his buttstock. CLICK HERE for full-screen photo.

To “tune” the rifle’s balance, Joe just slides the ankle weight fore and aft on the stock. We have tried this moveable ankle weight on a variety of different BR stocks (including a McMillan Edge) and it worked perfectly. This is a great invention, and would work with sporter rifles and ARs just as well.

NOTE: Obviously, this ring will increase the measured weight of your rifle. So, if you are competing in a registered match with weight restrictions, you have to ensure that your rifle still makes class weight limits with the ankle weight ring in place.
