Do you often carry a concealed handgun? Then you should definitely read Beretta’s FREE 15-page eBook, Ten Essential Tips for CCW Holders. This eBook, in handy PDF format, helps gun owners select an appropriate handgun (and holster), understand legal obligations and responsibilities, and train effectively with the firearm. This short PDF eBook offers many useful tips to consider, in particular for gun owners who are contemplating the pros and cons of everyday carry for themselves.
As the Beretta CCW booklet says, “Carrying a concealed handgun requires a certain amount of confidence. You need to be confident in your knowledge of laws and regulations. You have to have confidence in your accuracy, and you need to trust that you can carry a gun effectively, securely and comfortably. If a gun is a burden for you to carry, you probably won’t.”

It’s Day 2 of the 2025 SHOT Show. Hundreds of new handguns are on display at vendor’s booths in Las Vegas. Today we feature notable new (or updated) handguns from Smith & Wesson, Colt, Glock, and KelTec. If we were shooting action pistol competitions we would definitely consider the new metal-framed S&W M&P9. And the KelTec 5.7 offers impressive fire-power in a very slim and lightweight package.
Smith & Wesson M&P9 Metal HD – Spec Series V
If you shoot gun games such as the USPSA matches, you want a high-mass pistol with a fast cycling and low muzzle lift for quick follow shots. That can be achieved with a ported barrel and an all-metal frame. Smith & Wesson has emplyed this design with its new M&P9 Metal HD – Spec Series V. This 9mm striker-fired pistol has a 23-round capacity, and utilizes a newly designed aluminum trigger to facilitate more consistent and accurate shooting.
Weighing in at 2.31 lbs. (without magazine), the M&P9 Metal HD features a steel frame with enhanced texturing, a steel magwell, and a steel optics plate. All that steel increases overall weight and help reduce felt recoil. Its 4.8-inch threaded barrel, controls, and magwell all display a sharp blue PVD finish, and it is equipped with a Strike Industries™ compensator to tame muzzle rise and improve control.
“Our polymer M&P handguns [are] recognized for their ergonomics and reliability. We took these trusted attributes and integrated them into a steel platform to help mitigate felt-coil, allowing users to keep their pistol running flat and fast. This new Spec Series offers an advantage in today’s dynamic shooting environments while delivering a premium look and feel”, noted Corey Beaudreau, S&W Product Manager.
The M&P9 Metal HD ships with tall C.O.R.E.™ green night sights and also includes an optics-ready slide that can fit red dot optic. Additional features include three 23-round magazines, a Spec Series Coin and Knife, and a hard carry case. CLICK HERE to view more info and photos for the M&P9 Metal HD – Spec Series V.
The KelTec PR57 is a slim, high-capacity lightweight pistol chambered for the potent 5.7x28mm cartridge. This innovative handgun employs an innovative top-loading design, eliminating the need for traditional magazines. The KelTec PR57 internal 20-rd magazine is fed via 10-round stripper clips (see photo at right). Weighing just 13.86 oz (393 g), the PR57 is very light and thin. With a 4.64″ barrel, is is 7.16″ long, and just 0.937″ wide — 40% thinner that other 5.7×28 pistols.
The PR57 features a rotary (spinning) 1:7″-twist barrel and a crisp 4.5 lb trigger pull. Kel-Tec says the 13.86-ounce PR57 is the lightest pistol in its caliber on the market. By comparison, the FN Five-Seven MRD, PSA 5.7 Rock, and Ruger 57 all weigh 25 ounces, nearly twice as much. In addition to black, the PR57 will be offered in FDE and olive drab. The KelTec PR57 ships with two 10-round stripper clips and an optics plate, with an MSRP of $399. The pistol is expected to begin shipping sometime in the first quarter of 2025.
NOTE: There is a major negative — UNLOADING the pistol is not as simple or fast as simply removing a detachable magazine from the bottom of the grip. This PR57 does NOT have a detachable magazine.

Jessie Harrison is arguably the best female action pistol shooter in history. Numero uno among all lady handgun competitors. No other lady has amassed as many championships or set so many speed-shooting records. Over the past two decades Jessie Harrison (who has also competed with with married names Jessie Duff and Jessie Abbate) has earned dozens of major titles including twenty-two U.S. Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) Ladies Championships.
Jessie is the first female shooter to obtain Grand Master status in the U.S. Practical Shooting Association. Competing in five different shooting disciplines, Jessie has won both world and national championship titles, including the prestigious Bianchi Cup, Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting Championships, and numerous USPSA National Championships. Most recently she was the Lady’s Open Champion at the 2024 World Speed Shooting Championships.
This Saturday at the Movies feature showcases Jessie Harrison shooting in competition as well as Jessie offering shooting and firearms safety tips. You can see dozens more action pistol videos featuring Jessie on the Jessie Harrison YouTube Channel.
Blast From the Past — Young Jessie in Cowboy Action Mode
Early in her shooting career, Jessie enjoyed Cowboy Action Shooting. She honed her skills shooting revolvers and lever guns “on the clock” with steel targets. For this Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) sport, all competitors use an official “alias” at matches. Jessie’s SASS alias was “Jasmine Jessie”. Watch this video from 2009 to see a young Jessie in action with a slick shotgun-loading trick.
Jessie Harrison, Successful Huntress
Jessie also enjoys hunting. Back in 2019, the chance to bag a Muley buck drew action-shooting ace Jessie Harrison out to Wyoming’s Bighorn Mountains region. Jessie, who is probably the best lady action pistol shooter on the planet, had a successful hunt with Big Horn Outfitters. Jessie, Shooting Team Captain for Taurus USA, really enjoyed getting out into the Wyoming wilderness. And she got her buck!
The Taurus 327 T.O.R.O. Defender Revolver has earned an NRA Golden Bullseye Award as the Shooting Illustrated2025 Handgun of the Year. The 327 T.O.R.O. earned this honor for innovative design, dependable performance, and good value. Taurus says this is the first-ever small-frame revolver that’s optics-ready from the factory. This compact carry revolver is chambered for the .327 Federal Magnum cartridge, and is designed principally as a compact defensive pistol, though it can also be used for IDPA competitions.
The NRA Golden Bullseye Awards, now in their 23rd year, honor the shooting industry’s new and innovative products as selected by the editorial teams of Shooting Illustrated, American Rifleman, and American Hunter magazines. “These awards have become the most prestigious in the entire firearm industry,” said Michael J. Sanford, Deputy Executive Director of NRA Publications.
The Taurus 327 T.O.R.O. is part of the Taurus Optics Ready Option (TORO) platform for small-frame revolvers. This optics-ready capability is a notable upgrade for a small revolver — an important evolution for a defensive pistol. Red dot optics allow faster aiming, particularly in low-light situations. There are three main types of red dot sights – reflex, prismatic, and holographic. Although each works differently, they serve the same purpose: making target acquisition quick, easy, and accurate. Engineered for versatility, the Taurus 327 T.O.R.O. is chambered in .327 Federal Magnum, offering flexibility with compatibility for both .32 H&R Magnum and .32 S&W cartridges.
What a tale this rusty Colt could tell — this M1911 pistol is more than a vintage military side-arm. It is a symbol of courage, determination, and triumph over adversity. This pistol was carried on a 2,060-mile open-boat ocean crossing from the Philippines to Australia. In May of 1942, the skipper and 17 crewmen of the Minesweeper U.S.S. Quail courageously decided to sail from Manilla to Darwin, Australia rather than surrender to the Japanese. Lt. J.H. Morrill and his crew made that long ocean journey in a 36-foot launch, braving enemy air and sea forces and dangerous ocean conditions.
This pistol is part of the NRA Museum Collection in Fairfax, Virginia. This historic Colt M1911 was a featured “Gun of the Day” on the NRA Museum Facebook Page where you’ll find hundreds of other interesting firearms. We believe the remarkable story of this pistol deserved to be told here…
Colt M1911 Pistol — Escape from Corregidor
The minesweeper U.S.S. Quail was the last operational American naval vessel in the Philippines when Japan began its occupation of the country in May 1942. After his vessel was disabled at the strategically-important island of Corregidor near the entrance to Manilla Bay, Lt. Commander J. H. Morrill scuttled the ship and gave his crew a choice: either surrender to the Japanese or attempt to escape, by sea, to Allied territory thousands of miles away. Rather than surrender, 17 crew members elected to join Morrill on a dangerous passage in a 36-foot open launch/lifeboat. Gear was scavenged including this M1911 recovered from a dead serviceman. With few charts or navigational aids, Morrill and his men successfully completed an epic 58-day 2,060-mile journey to Australia and safety.

“22 Plinkster” is an avid shooter who has produced a number of entertaining videos for his YouTube Channel. In the video below, he tackles the question “Why Do Misfires Occur in .22 LR Rimfire Ammunition?” This is the most common question posed to 22 Plinkster by his many viewers. He identifies four main issues that can cause .22 LR misfires or faulty ignition:
1. Damaged Firing Pin — The dry firing process can actually blunt or shorten the firing pin, particularly with older rimfire firearms. Use of snap caps is recommended.
2. Poor Ammunition — Some cheap brands have poor quality control. 22 Plinkster recommends using ammo from a manufacturer with high quality control standards, such as CCI and Federal.
3. Age of Ammunition — Rimfire ammo can function well for a decade or more. However the “shelf life” of rimfire ammunition is not infinite. You ammo’s “lifespan” will be shortened by heat, moisture, and humidity. You should store your rimfire ammo in a cool, dry place.
4. Mishandling of Ammunition — Tossing around ammunition can cause problems. Rough handling can cause the priming compound to be dislodged from the rim. This causes misfires.
Preventing misfires is essential if you want to succeed in NRL22 competition and other rimfire competition disciplines run “on the clock”.
