The latest GunBroker.com Top-Selling Handguns list reveals the most popular pistols among gun buyers this past year. Turns out that two SIGs top the list. For 2023, the SIG Sauer P365 came in as the Top-Selling Handgun. The SIG Sauer P320 was second and the GLOCK G19 took third in the handgun category.
The P365 also came in as the best-selling firearm overall — meaning it sold more than any rifle or shotgun, as well as any pistol. Notable, the SIG Sauer P320 was also the second-best selling firearm overall. Both handguns have grown steadily in popularity in recent years. The P320 is the civilian version of the military’s M17. CCW holders really like the P365 because of its moderate size and good ergonomics. It also boasts a higher capacity than most handguns in its size category.
The Glock G19 has been popular with shooters pretty much since its introduction back in the 1980s, especially after numerous law enforcement agencies adopted either it or the G17, from which the G19 was derived. Shooters like the G19 because it’s more concealable than the G17, but still has the same reliability. New G19 variants are available, such as the G19 Gen 5 MOS which comes fitted with a Holosun optic.

Handguns Under $400 Featured on GunBroker.com
If you are in the market for a new handgun, but have a limited budget, GunBroker has a helpful review. In the article Top 10 Handguns for under $400, Gunbroker’s editors showcase ten interesting pistols. We think the three top featured choices were the Taurus G3 9mm, Smith & Wesson SD9 VE, and Canik TP9SA Mod 2 9mm (shown below):
Need a portable, light-weight target stand? Here’s a clever, minimalist alternative to big, bulky wood-framed or PVC pipe target stands. Those big frames will work, but they take up lots of space in your vehicle and, unless you build a very solid base, they tend to rock back and forth, or even blow over in high winds. With a commercial sign frame (the kind used for real estate signs) you can easily mount cardboard shooting targets.
For under $20.00 you can get a metal sign frame that can be staked directly in the ground. These sign frames, commonly used for real estate signs, are secure in high winds, and they are just about ideal if you need a simple target for zeroing during a varmint hunt. With most of these frames you can secure a cardboard target backer with zip ties or threaded fasteners. With some frames you just slide the cardboard backer into slots, so no fasteners are required. The most common “Empire-style” sign frame has a rectangular section at the top with two pointed ends about 10″ apart at the bottom. Put your foot on the crossbar to drive the frame into the ground. An angle-iron, Empire-style frame (no fasteners required) is offered by the fastrealestatesigns.com for $19.99.
Reinforced-Plastic Sign Frames
Shown at right is a plastic sign frame that requires no fasteners. Simply cut your cardboard target backer to 24″ (w) x 18″ (h) and slide it in from the top. Then stick the frame into the ground using the foot-slot near the bottom. These fiberglass-reinforced plastic sign frames are light yet surprisingly strong. They are also affordable. A similar sign-holder but with a full-width base (wider legs) costs $31.79 from SignsDirect.com. And you can probably get something similar locally. Amazon carries plastic signs like this also, crafted by Plasticade. Shown below are dimensions of some commercial plastic signs.
TIP: Sign Frames Are Not Ideal For All Terrain
If you shoot where the ground is very hard or rocky, these stake-in-the-ground frames may not work so well. They need to be seated firmly in the soil. But if you shoot in an area with soft soil or grassy turf, these frames can be a handy solution. Simple, light-weight and easy to set-up, they make a nice “field expedient” target holder.
Will you be traveling out of state this spring? Or do you have questions about your own state’s firearms laws? Then you’ll want to have quick access to summaries of gun laws in America’s 50 states. Here’s a very valuable online resource you may want to bookmark.
The NRA-ILA (Institute for Legislative Action) has a great feature on the NRA-ILA’s homepage. From the NRA home page, NRA-ILA.org, you can instantly access a host of information for all 50 states. There is a menu box that includes all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, New York City, and Guam. Look for the box that appears below the “NRA-ILA Top Stories Banner”:
Alternatively, look at the UPPER LEFT for three horizontal lines. Click that to open a drop-down menu. Then select the third line Gun Laws > State Gun Laws. That will open a page with all the 50 states listed in order A to Z. Or bookmark the NRA-ILA State Gun Laws Page.
NOTE: Some of this information is not completely current, so you may want to check with more detailed, up-to-date reference, such as the Legal Heat $20 50 State Guide to Firearms Laws and Regulations (2023 Edition). Most of the information in the book is also available in the FREE Legal Heat Firearms Law APP for Android and iOS (Apple) mobile devices. Here are screenshots from the Legal Heat iPhone App.
Shown below is part of the NRA-ILA’s coverage for Texas. There is a summary of the most important Texas gun laws. Below that is a map showing the states that recognize Texas carry permits.

This scope will also connect to Pulsar’s Stream Vision Ballistics App. With the App you can load ballistic profiles directly into the Thermion scope’s built-in memory.
Volquartsen Summit Rifle, Straight-Pull .17 HMR and .22 WMR
Ever shot a straight-pull (aka toggle-link) action rifle? We like these action types, which were developed for Biathlon competitors who needed to shoot fast, but were not allowed to use semi-auto actions. The biathlon-style toggle action features a lever on the side of the action. Pull the lever back with your index figure to open the bolt, then push forward with your finger to close the bolt. With some practice, you can cycle the action in a couple of seconds — nearly as fast as a semi-auto. The Summit has been a popular .22 LR rifle for quite some time. Now, in response to requests from varminters, Volquartsen will be selling the Summit in .17 HMR and .22 WMR, two potent rimfire cartridges.
SIG Sauer P-322 Comp .22 LR Pistol
SIG Sauer has a new .22 LR rimfire handgun — the P322-COMP pistol. Designed for speed, accuracy, and flat shooting (low muzzle flip), this new rimfire pistol from SIG Sauer is ready for competition right out of the box. It comes with a red dot optic, barrel-mounted compensator, slide-mounted racker, good trigger, and high-capacity (20- and 25-rd) magazines. READ P322 Manual.

Big news — Lapua will be releasing 6mm GT and .300 WSM cartridge brass in 2024! Lapua has announced the addition of two major additions to its brass lineup. In spring, Lapua will start shipping .300 Winchester Short Magnum (WSM) cartridge cases. And, in the fall of 2024, Lapua promises to offer 6mm GT brass through authorized Lapua retailers.
Lapua 6mm GT (6GT) Brass
Lapua’s new 6mm GT brass promises to be a big hit with PRS/NRL shooters and varminters who want a bit more capacity than the 6mmBR case. The 6mm GT (aka 6GT) cartridge was conceived as a “bigger Dasher” for PRS/NRL competition. The 6mm GT’s creators wanted 6mm Dasher accuracy and moderate recoil delivered via a cartridge with a slightly longer case body for better mag-feeding, longer neck for seating flexibility, and more moderate pressures. So far the 6GT has performed very well in PRS/NRL competition. With the upcoming availability of premium Lapua-brand 6mm GT brass, we may also see a greater adoption of the 6GT in mid-range benchrest competition. We expect varminters may adopt the cartridge also, both in 6mm and necked down to .22 caliber.
Lapua’s Vice President of Sales & Marketing, Jarkko Aro stated, “Competitors shooting PRS, and similar long-range disciplines, have urged us to develop a 6mm GT case with unmatched quality and superior cartridge geometry to those currently offered in the marketplace. We’re confident we’ve exceeded their demands by collaborating with original cartridge developers, George Gardner and Tom Jacobs.”
Lapua .300 Winchester Short Magnum (WSM) Brass
Available in spring of 2024, Lapua will offer a superior-quality .300 WSM case through authorized retailers. Lapua cartridge cases are known for their superb quality, consistency, and longevity. Lapua brass cases are the #1 component choice of competitive shooters in most accuracy disciplines. Lapua uses only the highest-quality materials and manufacturing processes to satisfy the demands of reloaders who seek the highest levels of precision from their .300 WSM firearm platforms.
This product release is significant news for hunters and F-Open shooters. The .300 WSM has been an effective F-Open cartridge, both in .30-caliber and necked down to 7mm. With the availability of Lapua-brand .300 WSM brass later this spring, we expect that more F-Open shooters will employ a match cartridge based on this brass.
Lapua Sales & Marketing Manager, Erkki Seikkula stated, “.300 WSM reloading enthusiasts who insist on using the best components now have Lapua cartridge cases available for their long-range target rifles and custom hunting guns. From all of us at Lapua, thank you for seeking out our components to fulfill your precision reloading needs.” Order now for delivery in spring 2024 from authorized Lapua retailers.
Story based on article by Gary Anderson, DCM Emeritus
Updated rules governing CMP Competitions in 2024 have been posted on the CMP website. Competitors and match officials may download these new rules for the 2024 competition season. The CMP currently produces seven different competition rulebooks. Six of these rulebooks have been revised and are now available as New Rulebooks for 2024, listed below.
Links to electronic versions of each 2024 rulebook may be uploaded onto electronic devices for everyday access, or they can be printed as hard copies to be kept in notebooks. Printed versions of these rulebooks will be published in a couple of months for those who prefer traditional rulebook hard copy formats. However the electronic version of the rule posted on the website will still be the official version of the rule.
Magazine Rule Updates for AR and M1A Rifles
The 2024 rules will permit M16/AR15-type rifles as well as M14/M1A-type rifles to have shorter 5- and 10-round magazines. This will help shooters who compete in states with restrictive magazine laws.
NOTE: Competitors who plan to take advantage of this rule change need to be aware that shorter rifle magazines must have visible, brightly colored strips on the bottom of the magazine (see photo). This is so Range Officers can readily see when these magazines are inserted or removed.
New Categories for Vintage Sniper Rifle Team Matches
One notable 2024 rule change is the addition of a new rifle category for the Vintage Sniper Rifle Team Match. This will allow two-person teams to compete with sniper rifles produced between 1954 and 1976, during the Viet Nam era. See “Guidelines for Preparing Vintage Sniper Rifles that Comply with Class B Viet Nam Era Vintage Sniper Rifle Rules”, now included with the CMP Games Rulebook for the Vintage Sniper Rifle Team Match.
Distinguished Marksman Program for Shooters with Disabilities
One of the newer CMP programs is the Distinguished Marksman Program that offers opportunities for competitors with disabilities to use adaptive positions and equipment to complete EIC courses of fire. Each rulebook provides specific rules for how competitors with disabilities or limitations can earn Distinguished Marksman EIC credit points. Persons with disabilities who have an interest in marksmanship should definitely consider this program. Interested persons should contact Amy Cantu at 888-267-0796 (toll-free) or via email at: acantu@thecmp.org.
All of the Range Officer scripts that were previously published in the back of the CMP rulebooks have been taken out of this year’s rulebooks. These Range Officer scripts are still accessible through the rulebook postings in the CMP website. Links to the “Range Officer Firing Procedures” for each discipline are posted with the rulebook listing. Each Range Officer script can be downloaded in a format that accommodates their use on the range. This will eliminate several dozen pages from the rulebooks while ensuring that Range Officers still have full access to the range procedures and Range Officer instructions.

Every year the NRA Publications group announces Golden Bullseye Award winners for various product categories (rifle, handgun, shotgun, optics, gear etc.). These awards are like the Oscars for the shooting industry. There are many Golden Bullseyes given out each year because there are separate awards given by different NRA Magazines — including American Rifleman, Shooting Illustrated, and American Hunter. Here are the 2024 Rifles of the Year (Golden Bullseye Winners) as chosen by each of those three publications.
American Rifleman 2024 Golden Bullseye — Rifle of the Year
American Rifleman says the Springfield Armory 2020 Rimfire has impressive features: “Springfield 2020 Rimfire rifles come with an accuracy guarantee to shoot a three-shot group under one inch at 50 yards with match-grade ammunition. [The] new 2020 Rimfire bolt action [has] dual cocking cams and a 60-degree bolt throw. Its American black walnut stock blends beautifully with the satin-blued finish of the receiver and barrel.”
