People enjoy shooting and hunting for a variety of reasons. For some it is the challenge, and the satisfaction of performing a difficult task with mastery. For others the appeal is the camaraderie — the fellowship of other shooters. Some folks enjoy the mechanical aspect — the process of reloading and just “tinkering around with guns”.
For this Editor, one of the main reasons I enjoy shooting is the chance to experience nature — to get away from the city, to a place “far from the madding crowds”. With that spirit in mind, here is an amazing time-lapse video (with music soundtrack) filmed from many vantage points in Yosemite National Park. We challenge you to watch the full video and not long to go out into the “wild places”. As John Muir said: “Going to the woods is going home.”

A while back, Werner Mehl of Kurzzeit.com produced a 10-minute video for the 2010 SHOT Show. When syndicated via YouTube, this amazing video became an internet phenomenon. It has been watched over six million times! Employing cameras recording at up to 1,000,000 (one million) frames per second, Mehl’s bullet flight video has been called “astounding”, “mesmerizing”, and a “work of art.” If you haven’t seen it yet, sit back and enjoy!

The American Gunsmithing Institute (AGI) has released a new Precision Long Range Shooting DVD. For what it’s worth, AGI guarantees this DVD can increase the hunter or tactical shooter’s accuracy by 37%. We’re skeptical of course, but that’s AGI’s claim. The DVD features gunsmith and long-range shooting expert Darrell Holland who narrates a multi-step course of instruction.
The DVD starts off with hardware — rifle, cartridges, and bullets. Next, ranging and equipment calibration are covered, followed by a discussion of optics and range finders. Shooting techniques are covered from the point of view of both the hunter and tactical shooter. Holland gives tips for bench and field shooting positions. Darrell also demonstrates field-expedient shooting techniques and accessories for optimum accuracy.
The DVD includes filmed demonstrations of precision shooting out to 600 yards. Developed exclusively for AGI customers, this DVD includes a set of tables for calculating aiming points for long-range shots. Editor: This video is brand new, so we haven’t had a chance to preview it yet. Honestly, we don’t know whether it is worth the money. You probably can learn more in our own Shooters’ Forum for FREE. But there are few video/DVD resources for precision long-range shooting, so we thought this release was worth mentioning. Darrell Holland, the DVD’s featured expert, is a talented gunsmith, who runs highly regarded shooting clinics for long-range hunters. Darrell’s advice is probably going to be sensible and useful. Whether his coaching can actually increase a shooter’s accuracy 37% is for viewers to decide for themselves.
Check out this cool video filmed by Charles Le at the 2011 USPSA Handgun Nationals in Las Vegas. Charles focused on the top female competitors, gals with world-class speed and accuracy. The video features Julie Golob, Jessie Harrison, Maggie Reese, Diana Le, Athena Lee, Kippi Leatham, Bonnie Ryder, and Cindi Thomas. These ladies redefine, in a positive way, what it means to “Shoot Like a Girl”.

By default, this YouTube video runs in 360p. However, if you have a fast connection you can select a higher resolution including 720p and 1080p HD (High Definition). You can also click the arrows icon on the lower right corner of the video to expand for full screen. Watching this vid in 1080p on a full screen is pretty impressive — trust us. (During HD viewing, if the display is choppy, let the whole video download before playback.) Charles Le’s video shows the production quality that can now be achieved with affordable equipment. Charles used a Canon EOS 60d camera (body only about $700), and edited the video on a MacBook Pro using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.

On Hornady’s new social media pages, shooters can share their photos and stories about hunting, competitive shooting, and reloading. Importantly, the Facebook Page will allow shooters to interact with Hornady’s “brain trust” — the ballisticians, designers, and engineers who develop Hornady’s new products. Allowing customers to share their ideas/experiences with the folks who design and build Hornady products is a good thing. Hornady can get reliable, immediate feedback on its products. That should speed up the process of making improvements and enhancements.
Bryan Litz, Ballistician for Berger Bullets, has created a fantastic 10-minute video that covers the recent Berger Southwest Long-Range Nationals from start to finish. Bryan, Overall Match Winner in the Sling Division, had his still and video cameras rolling for each phase of the popular event, including the Tuesday training seminars, Wednesday’s mid-range fun match, three days of scored long-range shooting (Friday – Sunday), and the awards ceremonies. The 2011 SW Nationals was a big success, drawing 161 shooters from 12 states and even Canada. There were clear skies with 70° highs every day — welcome weather for the Snow-birds who came down to compete.

During the score matches, Bryan had multiple cameras running, with one focused through a spotting scope. This allows you to see shooting, shot-marking, and target movement in real time. If you watch carefully, you can also see bullet trace on many shots. Bryan delivers a “Shooter’s Eye View” of the match with these multiple camera sequences.
Bryan covers all the top shooters and winning teams. One of the highlights of Bryan’s video is an interview with Danny Biggs, who set a new National F-Open class record, shooting 200-15X, not once but twice (the second time in really tough conditions). Danny was shooting a 7mm RSAUM with Berger 180gr Hybrid bullets, using a Barnard action and straight-contour 1:9″-twist Krieger barrel. He was loading Hodgdon H4350 in Remington Brass. NF Benchrest scope of course.

We were sad to see AccurateShooter.com contributor Kelly Bachand eliminated in the previous episode, but he’s shooting right now at Camp Perry. Berger Bullets has just released a video report from Eric Stecker, Berger’s “master bulletsmith”. In this video update, Eric explains why Berger’s popular 6mm, 25 cal, and 7mm bullets are in short supply. Eric reports that production delays were caused by mechanical problems with the jacket-making presses. The good news is that the jacket presses have now been fixed (this required a complete rebuild of the 7mm press), so production should be back on schedule very soon. You’ll find more current news and match reports on Berger’s new Facebook Page.
