New Book on California Gun Laws Released
The California Rifle & Pistol Association (CRPA) has released an important new book: California Gun Laws: A Guide to State and Federal Firearm Regulations. Written by CRPA/NRA attorney C.D. Michel, this new resource has just arrived from the printers and should start shipping this week. Price is $27.13.
Gun owners who live or do business in California should strongly consider purchasing this 320-page book. California gun laws are complex and confusing. There are over 800 California state statutes regulating the manufacture, distribution, sale, possession, and use of firearms. There are thousands of overlapping federal laws regulating firearms that apply in California. And there are hundreds of administrative regulations, local ordinances, and California Department Justice Firearms Bureau written and unwritten policies that also apply.
On top of the already byzantine regulatory scheme, on January 1, 2012 California firearm laws were completely reorganized and re-numbered. Because of the complexity of the laws, and the recent statute number changes, inadvertent gun law violations by well-intentioned citizens are increasingly common. In the politicized legal environment of California “gun-control” laws, the consequences of even an inadvertent violation can be severe.

I disagree with the statement that confusion runs rampant among gun owners here – that is exactly the kind of stereotyping that education needs to overcome!

I’m not criticizing California shooters. Confusion is not “ignorance”. But I do believe there is widespread “confusion” about California gun laws — not only among gun owners, but among shop clerks, law enforcement officials, and even DOJ employees. I would honestly say that the majority of gun owners, shooting store clerks, and police officers I’ve interviewed could not give you a concise and correct explanation of California’s current “assault weapon” standards, or how the handgun testing system works, or what are the requirements for a transfer into California from another state (private party vs. FFL origination).
I just purchased a PCP air gun for hunting. I understand that in California that you have to take your tanks to a special place to fill the tanks. Could you tell me what the closest place I can go to fill my tanks. I live in Bakersfield, CA. Please give me some input on this situation. Thank you so much. DALE
